Apparently you guys really love a good unique government type in EU4, so we're back with a MATRIARCHY! Following the swell of interest from my "You can get a secret MILITANT ORDER OF NUNS in EU4... and it's INSANE!" video, I thought I'd look a little deeper so today, we're looking at EU4 nubia and attempting to hold off the Mamluks as we check out this unique eu4 nation!
Remember, So you can start as a MATRIARCHY in EU4... and it's AWESOME!

worth emphasising that a matrilineal system refers to descent being understood through the female line, not only women being allowed to rule, so many matrilineal systems are still remarkably patriarchal and you may have, for instance in Nubia, inheritance being from a male ruler to their sister's son (as well as many other examples of very different systems)

I don't think any start with them, but HRE theocracies in any case have a mission which upgrades a church in their capital if they have 10 (or as many as they have provinces) churches. "Matrilineal society, also called matriliny, group adhering to a kinship system in which ancestral descent is traced through maternal instead of paternal lines (the latter being termed patrilineage or patriliny)." As far as I remember from studying Anthropology a long time ago that Matrilineal doesn't mean they rule the nation... its about the family name, who property goes to, surnames of the children etc... it doesn't mean that the women are the soldiers & rulers & don't do any of the washing up. Great video however Matrilineal and matriarchal are not the same XD. Historically Jews have a Matrilineal succession for passing on Jewish identity which means it passes through the mother's line. Picts in classic age Scotland also had a Matrilineal system where the legitimacy to rule came from the female line, even though men were the rulers. "lineal" meaning lineage. Matri-archy means female rule, where women hold exclusive political power. "archy" meaning rule. So Matrilineal and Matriarchy are female lineage and female rule.

The matrilineal system of inheritance in the Nubian states, or Kandake, was a system which gave the honour of birthing the next heir in line to the sister of the reigning king. The only thing I could find of Soba being the capital would be that it was, from what I understood, the largest and wealthiest city in the region, but was plundered and picked apart to build the city of Khartoum.
@Arwilus

The queen mother, for that was her title, was a landholder, had her own court and would act as a secular regent. The name Candace comes from the Romans and Greeks thinking Kandake was a name and not a title.

A lot of the time having a queen regnant is a sign that the country is not in a good place, because if it were it would have been able to find a male heir to take the throne. Usually means all the male heirs are dead or for some political or religious reason are unsuitable to rule. In any case they tend do to be a sign of chaos. Queens like Elizabeth and Victoria are relative outliers in that they were not just long lived competent queens, but competent English monarchs in general. There are a lot of terrible and mediocre monarchs that have sat that throne, including some women. It’s funny that you mention PUs because Victoria’s ascension broke the union between Britain and Hannover, as the title could not pass to a woman.

In the Nubian kingdoms the natural heir was the eldest son of the eldest sister of the former king, rather than the son of the former king. A young king would have his mother as a regent, and an adult king would have his mother and sister as his most important advisors (the sister bearing the title of kandake). If I remember rightly there are two examples historically of a kandake actually taking the throne for herself, but the rest of the time the ruler was always a male king. Matrilineality meant that the line of male rulers was traced via mothers, not that women themselves ruled most of the time.

Wouldn't the Berbers of Northern Africa have migrated their at a later period? Considering how... European, the area is from the time of Ancient Greeks (I believe the ancient greeks and carthagians had common ancestors due to the countless greek style colonies over the med) to Romans and then European Barbarian hordes that settled their after rampaging through the Roman empire. Could be wrong on this, but a good chance the Berbers are named because they did originate from that province, or close to it. Purely a guess, after the fall of the Roman Empire my history for that part of the world is a bit hazy, but didn't the muslims sweep through, conquering the land all the way to Iberia itself? Feel free to correct me if im wrong, always eager to learn, but i would like references.

From some cursory research, it looks like the ancestors of the Berbers were established in North Africa a few thousand years before the Phoenicians colonists that founded Carthage ever arrived, which is supported by linguistic evidence that Proto-Berber separated from the other Afro-Asiatic languages somewhere between 4 and 5 thousand years ago. This is mostly just me grabbing from wiki though. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berbers#History + en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proto-Berber_language

matrieneality: social life is builded with maternal lineage. it is fact, most of nation had matrienality once and still some ethnicity have this kind systems. matriarchy: women have all politic power and they are leader of community. it is theoric thing, socialist sociologist create this term for explaning marriage. they belive people was living under collective comune system and they had not any ownership as a expected. when they create freehold, that occured inheritence problem and they needed heirs for their possesions. marriage and lineage projection consist because inheritance. they believe this chancing happened in the time. martienatity shows matriarchy was real, in old time women had all political power but with freehold they lost power. so that doesn't mean a matrieanal folk don't have any kings. actually political power still belong to men.

Clearly you haven't played enough Crusader Kings to understand what Matrilineal means. Like, if you played either CK2 or CK3 for any amount of time you'd know that having a Matrilineal marriage just means that the dynasty of the offspring follows the mother's dynasty, it has no bearing on who is allowed to ascend the throne, just how lineage is determined. I think you have confused Matrilineal Dynasties with Enatic Succession.
