Mikala's 5 TIG Welding Tips
#1
Make sure everything is ‘squeaky’ clean.
TIG welding doesn't tolerate any dirt.
So be sure to clean your base metal with a good degreaser. I use 3M surface cleaner, BEFORE you scrub it with a wire brush.
#2
Always be comfortable!
Whenever possible, I like to be seated when I’m welding. Even when you can sit while welding, any little adjustments to my body position that make me more comfortable will have a noticeable effect on the weld.
#3
Look for ways to support your torch hand
Having good support for your torch hand is crucial for moving the torch with precise control. I do my best welding when the base of my hand is supported in some way. Often I rest my wrist or pinky finger on the part being welded just to keep me steady.
#4
Do a practice run.
This may sound stupid, but it helps a lot!
It helps you find a comfortable position and the best possible way to complete the weld.
#5
Clean the contaminated tungsten immediately!
Every welder will contaminate their tungsten at some point, but it’s crucial that you replace or clean the contaminated tungsten immediately.

Another great very informative video Mikala, love the advice on comfort. (ABC’s of welding Always Be Comfortable!) and the recommendation of using one single wire brush for each type of material is priceless information 💪 I was told by my first mentor to only use a stainless wire brush on Aluminium. Keep up the great work Mikala I can’t wait to see what you come up with next 🔥🤝

I've been told the same about stainless brushes, but the advice should read "don't use a carbon steel brush." Those can leave deposits that contaminate your weld. Stainless is much less likely to do that, or (what looks like) a brass brush like Mikala is using. I prefer to go with scotch brite pads or die-grinder wheels to remove that oxide layer, and then wipe clean.

@@chrisewing3272 Brass brush for aluminum, stainless for any reactive alloys. Id use steel brushes if I was trying to save money in the field.

Great video, always remember to wire brush in one direction only otherwise you rub the contaminant you just brushed off back into the weld you just removed them from 😊

Great advices for people who start their journey with TIG. Personally i struggled with TIG welding at the beggining to be honest i hated it. Now it's my favourite. From me i have 3 more tips: 1. Comfort. The biggest pain in TIG welding, especially when you are working on big structures with heavy water cooled torch, is the weight of the torch cable itself. Simple solution is to wrap cable around your torch hand. That way you are distributing weight of the cable through your whole arm and not the wrist. And believe me I learned the hard way that 8 hours of manhandling torch with your wrist could end in orthopaedist waiting room (I am deadly serious right now, i couldn't use my hand for two weeks). 3. Also if you just don't have place to rest your hand on table or work and you can't walk the cup, rest your elbow against your body (like hip area). That way you will have enough support to do your work with a lot more precision. 2. Witre feeding. Best way to learn how to feed wire is developing muscle memory by repetition. Ask your boss/supervisor to take home one filler rod. When you are watching TV, reading book, talking with someone or watching weld.com on youtube try to feed wire through your fingers. That way wire will fly through your fingers without you even think about it. Try also feed your wire with holding wire with thumb and fourth finger and pushing wire with second and middle one. That way you are able to feed wire fast and/or be able to feed when space for wire hand is kinda limited.

Must be expensive, if it's Swiss. I've been to Oerlikon. It's basically a suburb of Zurich now. BTW, I've been doing some research on German welding and their materials, and it's a bit of a departure from US stuff. TIG is called WIG, since Tungsten is Wolfram in German. Yet, they seem to understand TIG. Probably because English language is so prevalent in the equipment area.

I dont use pulser mode instead i pump the pedal and achieve the same result with better control over my welds. also you seem to be stuggling with the aluminum. i would use a smaller cup like a 4 and stick out the tungsten. also would run 50/50 or even 30 cleaning and let the puddle form then start dabbing. i also have never walked the cup on aluminum, not necessary.

Walking the cup on aluminium?
@mattaomartinez.9817
@mattaomartinez.9817 2 года назад
@Mikala Eade Metalwork Usually cup walking is done when capping a pipe weld. I seen it on flanges and all kinds of different joints and alloys. Typically you dont walk cups on aluminum, I seen some cool weaves with aluminum though. The video was good and fun but the cup walking part was something of a misconception.
