This was great because a lot of people think marriage can survive on chemistry alone. But y'all have to be compatible on the big stuff: kids, religion, politics/life philosophy or you'll always be fundamentally at odds. Everything outside of that is a negotiation/conversation.
This was a great podcast. I will add that financially, it is important for couples to understand why the other individuals' financial history is the way it is. From experience, I know of individuals who went through life changes (medically, job loss, etc) that led to financial decline. Does that mean the person is not qualified to get married or not responsible with their funds? No. But it does warrant a deeper conversation. As believers God does not want us to suffer and lack in any way, however, He does allow people to go through obstacles to cultivate a deeper awareness in the person, and to draw them closer to Him in dependency and trust as Him being their source.

My husband would bring me home his check and I combined the two checks and pay the bills. He kept some for himself. But he would always come back for more. We didn’t want for anything. But we lived from check to check. This was in the 80’s and we both were in the military.
Loved this! Me and husband got married without discussing some of what y’all listed, but thank god that the main things like him being a man of god and us putting god first helped us through some of the things we didn’t discuss. I would say in the beginning money was an issue I’m a saver and my husband is a spender it was hard at first, but my husband now sees why it’s so important to save and we met in the middle. I was homeless when I was 19 so I was going over board and wanting to save every penny due to that trauma and he never experienced that he wanted to just blow blow blow, but by the grace of god we got together and we found a solutions it works.
I love this. I’m getting married next week and thankfully we did all of these things. We did pre engagement counseling too to make sure we even wanted to get married because I wanted to kill him (jk) at one point 😅 we worked through a lot and got engaged and did traditional premarital counseling and discussed money and sex and whatnot. I actually asked him about porn on a whim …and was shocked when he said it was something struggled with because he is the most open person ever but didn’t mention that. So we had to go to our pastor and make a plan for that. I’m glad y’all bought that up!

thank you so much! i think there can be a bunch of factors that make marriage hard. Some can be avoided (by having thorough conversations about what we have spoken about here) and some challenges can come unexpectedly like a loss of job or death in the family or sickness with your spouse which can change the whole dynamic of someones relationship. We have been blessed that at this point we haven't had to experience any major life changes as those listed above but i definitely think the things that can be avoided, some people skip over them because they want to be married so bad and think they can handle "x,y,z" and then they come to find that its much harder to deal with the things they thought they could deal with.

Trying to understand, where do we draw the line of keep your issues between you, your husband and god? I feel like there is a very thin line when family gets involved… altogether, we keep family out of our relationship on both sides as much as possible. Also, unfortunately not everyone has the pleasure of being liked by their spouses parents for different reasons. I have a great relationship with my fiancé mom, my mom and my fiancé has a good enough relationship. Since me & her don’t always get along, he leans on the side of protecting me but also will let me know when I am wrong.. they can communicate even when I don’t talk to her.
i do think it's a personal opinion because some matters may be bigger to some than it is to others, but we do think that community is important and that its okay to lean on certain friends that you trust for wise council in certain situations (maybe those friends can be agreed on between partners) but yes most things should be kept between the spouses in our opinion. As far as spouses/parents not having the best relationship.. not everything we say here is a 100 percent a deal breaker its just things we believe people should be aware of before getting married so if it works well for you guys then thats great too!

You both are wise beyond your years. Praise God! I’ve been married for 30 years. We have 3 beautiful children your age. While I agree with all your points, it is also important to include in the financial topic that each person in the marriage may enter at different financial levels. My hubby had school loans and I didn’t. I had assets inherited from my deceased parents and he did not. We opted for joint accounts for living , savings, investment and travel but we each have our own accounts for other things. I have properties I share with my siblings and so does he. We each have our own accounts for self maintenance ie. My hair, nails, shopping, messages and he has same. We tithe together and donate to worthy causes together and separately. Although we have different beliefs, we agreed to provide our kids with a strong foundation with a Christian education but allowed them to choose once they went to college. i hate to be basic with this answer lol but marriage is 100/100 we're both giving everything we have, if you're talking about financially it still goes that way since we put all of our money in one bank account (we didn't touch on this in this episode but we do take out our personal spending "allowance" for the month and put it on our separate cash app cards) my relationship with money changed as soon as i said "i do" lol no longer just spending on whatever I wanted especially in the beginning when it was just me working and even know that he's working in his field we stick to the same budget that we implemented right after we got married. I hope that answers the question lol

My first comment was before. I got to finish the episo. So I'm just circling back around to say this was an excellent episode. I think you guys gave a lot of realistic advice and I agree with everything that you guys said. And I think that the only thing I will add is that people should go into a marriage expecting their partner to change but core values and standards of that person will hopefully not change but evolve. They should not have like a total 180 on those kind of things, but I think people should all change to some extent. But you should be navigating life and the world TOGETHER and expecting hardship while trying everything in your power to avoid it or prepare for how to get through it. My husband and i have been battle tested in almost every facet (except infidelity- which i rebuke in the name of jesus lol).

I don't usually make comments on the podcast but I felt called to say something. Jonathan and Jess are a very lovely couple in my opinion they don't seem ingenuine and I love the respect they have towards each other especially when one is expressing themselves and mostly I love that they LOVE Jesus. I felt in my spirit to tell Jonathan not to take heed to every word or reaction spoken about him negatively whether it be in the comments or ridiculous reaction videos. Marriage is so sacred and because you guys are now online with such a sacred and now rare thing there are going to be jealous people especially jealous men that can not compete with the respectful man that your husband is and that is what they will react to. Remember the Bible teaches us who can't stand before envy (Proverbs 27:4) I do hope that the comments on your channel always stay positive but I just seen another black, God centered, marriage podcast get ripped to shreds in their comment section from outsiders looking in and it just hurt my heart. Please y'all either filter your comment and revoke certain words from being used or don't read them at all. Take breaks when needed and most importantly stay prayed up genuinely HEED TO THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD ask him if you can or should post certain things because not everyone watching will be be here for the beautiful part of support but they are instead of their father the devil. That's all I wanted to say. Be strong and be courages and above all put on your armor to stand against the plots of the enemy.
