You have a good one. I have been riding my 1982 Interstate since acquiring it in 1993 and it has never left me stranded. Well, except that time the battery pooped out, and that was my fault for not replacing it earlier. With regular maintenance the bike will last forever. Handy hint: when checking the oil level in the sight glass on the lower right side of the crankcase, use a UV flashlight. The oil will show light green and the level can be easily seen.

Hey Yammie! I want to thank you for this video. I started riding on a 2004 Honda GoldWing GL1800, one that was actually literally passed down to me by my grandfather, Pat, when he passed in 2014. It had 68,000 miles on it and ran smooth as butter. I took it through various states and tons of trips, even going through 5 of the highest paved mountain passes in Colorado in one day. How long does it take to get used to not having a clutch?
@ddavidson5
@ddavidson5 3 года назад
@@Stripemas it takes about a day to get used to the "no clutch". What takes a little longer to adjust to is coming to a full stop, not an emergency stop or when knocking off speed for a corner or something, just a regular stop in traffic or coming up to a red light. With a clutch bike, for the last few yards, I'd pull in the clutch and glide to a smooth stop on just the brakes. With the DCT always engaged, as you brake to slow to a stop the DCT downshifts giving you these little blips of unexpected engine braking. I guess that's the difference between the DCT and the full automatic you have in your car. At first you feel like a complete amateur coming to a stop but in about a week you learn to adjust your braking technique and it's not a problem. In all other cases the DCT is super smooth and in almost every circumstance the DCT shifts better than I ever could.

Absolutely the same experience for me. I picked up a ‘21 DCT Tour in metallic black yesterday. I like pulling away with virtually no chance of stalling, but coming to a complete stop is a different situation. Yesterday was a first for me. I was missing the clutch. But I’m sure I will assimilate over time.
@ddavidson5
@ddavidson5 3 года назад
@@jeremynachbar3205 it doesn't take long to adjust to the braking but day one where you are I was pretty embarrassed about my stops. What I find myself doing is feathering the brake and most times can accurately anticipate the downshifts, these days it's usually a smooth stop. All us DCT guys say the same thing about the stopping, and it's an adjustment, but everything else is unbeatable.

I've ridden a gen 2,3 5 and 6. IMHO, all Gold Wings before gen 5 were odd-handling barges. The Gen 5 is a huge sport bike, with what seems like nuclear power. The Gen 6 is the same, only lighter, sharper, smaller, better handling, and faster. I raced an SV650 for a few years, and the gen 6 handles like that, with smoothness and torque that never ends. I'm saving up for one now!

Not many people know it was designed to be one of the first superbikes. It cooked, was very comfortable, super reliable, and was the best-looking Wing until this latest version. Gen 1 or Gen 6 only. Never BMW. Not for trips further than an hour or two from home (specially after warranty!). They simply aren't as reliable, easily maintained, well-thought-out...just not as real-world competitive.

My dad had a 2006 Goldwing. When he died, it sat for 5 years before my mom let me have it. I changed the fuel injectors (which basically required stripping down the bike down to the frame), and replaced the fuel pump. Took it to a shop for fresh fluids and new tires, and hit the road. These bikes, so I've heard, can go over 200k miles, and mine only has 56k. A bit of maintenance, and my kids will probably be able to ride it in 10 years.

I have a 2021 Standard Goldwing. I love it and yes I have the DTC model. One important thing left out of all the reviews is the bike no longer has a starter or alternator. It now has an electric motor generator much like what you would find in a hybrid vehicle. This electric motor generator provide you with Creep forward, creep in reverse, and also acts as first gear.

I have a 2020 DCT Tour. I am 59 and a dad. The automatic transmission took 3 minutes to fall in love with. Put it in Sport mode, and you’ll leave your dentures alongside of the road and your erectile dysfunction will be cured forever. And yes, this thing is indeed flickable. Too bad you have to be over 50 to own one. Sort of makes me feel bad for the younger generations saddled with broken kidneys, throbbing sit bones, and no Howard Stern on XM radio to comfort their woes! Here’s to being old! 😋

I bought a brand new 2008 Goldwing in 2009 (Airbag model) and kept it 11 years before I traded it. Although the bike wasnt perfect, it was far better than the used 2016 Ultra Classic I traded it for (Only had 5 miles on it). Not only did the Goldwing perform far better (more power, reverse, better suspension, sport bike feel, etc..) it was comparatively cheaper than the Ultra Classic. The fit and finish on the Harley was clearly superior, but I felt the bike was dangerous on the highway. It didn't have passing speed at 80+ mph and it felt far heavier than it was. I dumped a ton of cash into it (stereo, bars, LEDs all the way around, seat, etc...) and sold it after 9 months. It was a total PoS. Suspension sucked, horribly underpowered at highway speeds, felt heavier than it was, shitty head unit, maneuvered like a 1940s milk truck. There is simply no comparison between a Goldwing and Harley. People buy Goldwings to travel the interstate and people buy Harleys to make a statement. I simply cant imagine taking a long trip on a Harley with all the noise from the engine. I prefer the stereo and the sound of the motor gets annoying after 10 minutes. I have owned numerous new bikes through the years and am absolutely done with Harley. Their motorcycles are total pieces of shit because they are underpowered, unreliable, perform badly, air cooled, feel heavy and TOTALLY over priced. I will be buying another new Goldwing this year.

Great video; Truth spoken. I'm on my fifth GW and won't trade it for the world (unless I get an 2023 or 2024). After 25 years I am ready to get back on a bike, I am leaning toward a 4th gen Goldwing SE with lower mileage. Everything I have seen, read and heard tells me that that's the way to go for long trips I would like to do. I live in northern Alberta where I normally wouldn't want to ride a bike, as there is too much mud, rocks, tools and junk flying off of trucks here in the oilpatch, so regular normal everyday riding would be too risky. Gonna save up my pennies, and buy one next year, unless I win the lottery, then I will buy a spankin' new one..

I own a 2018 GL1800 db dct stallion brown (the best color) bagger. This bike is AWESOME! I never once thought I'd ride a goldwing this hard. 112 max socks for a bike you'd never know that you were really going that fast. I'm always at 90 to 95 before I backoff and set the cruise at 80. No chicken strips on my tires either, this is a fun bike to dang near drag knee on. Get the driver back rest, trust me, other wise in sport mode you'll end up on the back seat. The problem is mileage. I hypermiled mine and got 50.2,,, but I average 38 (remember,,, no chicken strips). One unexpected down side. The fob key has a pretty medallion on the back. Don't push it until you know what it does,,, oh, and save that number on the tag on the fob,,, you'll need that, it's very important.

Foot-pounds and pound-feet aren't the same thing. One foot-pound is the energy transferred when applying one pound of force through a *linear* displacement of one foot. It's equal to 1.355818 Joules. One pound-foot is the torque of applying one pound of force at a *perpendicular* distance of one foot from a pivot point. It's equal to 1.355818 Newton-meters. The difference is that a foot-pound is a scalar product, while the pound-foot is a vector product. Because vector math is fun.

Sad that the opportunity to ride one and include some of the footage in this and include your respected rider assessment is not included. How about the RC30 and it's smaller brother NC30/31 next ? Although how about riding first and then improving your story ? Take it canny and keep up the great reports.

Great video, but I'd add a few points: - The Goldwing has been downsized twice. First when they moved from a steel frame to an aluminum frame. The alum-frame generation looks bigger but is substantially lighter (I think like 80lbs!). - Next downsize was with the latest 6th gen. Gen Xers don't like the barge-like baby-boomer style, so they shrunk it in size to be between the ST1300 and the old Goldwing, then discontinuing the ST1300. It got lighter this time as well. - Also, to my personal disappointment, you can only get the airbag on a DCT version.
