Hey man; I've recently gotten a plumifrons basilisk. I've had it for almost a year; and the tail and spine are still slowly growing bigger, but the head crest has barely grown. How long does it take for them to show their sexual traits?
@TheReptileRoom1
@TheReptileRoom1 3 года назад
I think head crests are all different. My basilisks back sail has a dip and i have seen others with massive crests and tiny crests. Ours just started showing breeding activity late last year and early this year. He is 2.

@@mutantgoat4964 well i think that depends on husbandry and food intake. Ours is still growing his main sails and his head sail is getting a little bigger but im not sure that it will. Id guess if he isnt growing much anymore its pretty much done growing those sails out.

@@TheReptileRoom1 okay. Currently I've got a basilisk housed with a water dragon. And they have no problems with each other. They don't fight over basking spots or food; and I know different people have different opinions on it. But I've had mine for a little over a year; and as time goes on I can see his back crest and tail crest very slowly growing but not by much

Also that person who said "misting has no effect" is mistakenly referring more to houseplants probably. In terms of raising humidity in a non-enclosed space misting has temporary effect but misting has a huge effect in an acrylic enclosure lol

I'm getting my first Basilisk in about a week. I just found your channel and loved the info. My new guy is a youngster so hes's going into a small enclosure for a while, but your enclosure looks like something that I could build. Would you mind sharing your plans? Good info, and I've subscribed and liked this video. I look forward to watching and learning more.

Gorgeous basilisk man! One of my favorite reptiles. I had one a long long time ago when I was a kid and ashamed to say I did not know what I was doing. I used to hold him all the time and he was awesome. I just didnt have the experience back then and he died around a year and a half later. I feel bad about it but if I get another one I’ll definitely make an enclosure like this. It’s huge

@@TheReptileRoom1 my research on behavior so far Basilisk - male always keeps an eye on savanah when she is out if female notices savanah she looks at male and they switch she moves towards the back of the enclosure while he observes they remain territorial in branches but feel safe on floor as well when the male needs to drink or swim she keeps an eye on savanah they seem unbothered all being the same size Savanah owns 4 square ft of flor territory close to pond Bank large heated rock and close to her large tree trunk hide next to pond she comes out comfortably sun baths and eats her hide has 7 tunneled in different directions one main vessel that leads to other tightly packed areas that Basilisk can't fit in she uses her ability to dig to make multiple escapes Turtles remain unbothered of course 2 surviving feeder lizards goin the distance Basilisk are displaying nesting Basilisk are like lions 1 male to 4 or 5 females difference is the male goes into the hides to check them while she watches his back once time has passed she enters to continue watching his back but head out of hide also keeping eyes for outside guard (probably thinking an animal will return) she now comfortably sits in a hide which I believe is were she will lay eggs. Further research is needed - Will tactics change if more females are present Will they have more courage to attack Are they avoiding aggression due to eggs developing in stomach Will she guard the eggs (motherly instinct) or will she not care Do they care for children are they accepted in the pack like armadillo lizards or killed Is savanah just comfortable or no aggression since she is not male So far no injuries if so I'll remove them but so far I need a go pro to study and show these details Cohabitation allows another part of instincts to activate awareness and carefulness territory protection and much more that you can't get in a single tank these things are what I'm doing in my research I'll be making another bearded dragon tank with Cohabitation of another lizard to see what works and what doesn't in a large size enclosure

But gotta start somewhere!
@jackjohnson1186
@jackjohnson1186 3 года назад
Sorry to be that guy but technically heat ceramic emitters product infrared light, the lowest energy light. I believe your point was that it does not mess with animals day night cycle. We cannot see it but some reptiles especially snakes with heat pits can. It is an efficient conversion and they last a lot longer (compared to heat bulbs) because essentially you have electricity running through conductors that then heat up the ceramic and they are not producing visible light. I like the combo of a UVA and UVB emitting bulb that does not get very warm and a heat emitter connected to a thermostat like you have.
@TheReptileRoom1
@TheReptileRoom1 3 года назад
That is the same setup I have running. Heat emitter along with my UV lamps. For my Basilisks and my Rhino Iguana. I'm sure some if not all reptiles can detect infrared light but I have seen no adverse effects on the lizards that I put them on.

I’ve asked this a lot but what would be a good enclosure size for them that you can buy, I asked you before and you said you built it.
@TheReptileRoom1
@TheReptileRoom1 Год назад
I'm not sure what you're budget range may be but Custom Reptile Enclosures makes some decent size ones for 2 to 10k. You really need a lot of floor space, water space, and height. I'm not aware of many that are purchasable. My enclosure is 5ft x 4ft x 7ft tall. That's about as small as I'd recommend.

This happens a lot with Green Iguanas. I think Iguanas are more common in pet stores though than a Basilisk Lizard. I never seen a Basilisk Lizard in a pet store before actually. Just Iguanas for 10 or 15 dollars and people buy them without knowing an Iguana can get 6 feet long as an adult and they can be quite territorial.
@TheReptileRoom1
@TheReptileRoom1 3 года назад
There are many animals that fit this category. I have seen far less iguanas than basilisks in my area. In sure it has to do with location and availability.

I just recently stumbled upon your channel. I love all sorts of the obscure semi-arboreal lizards and B. plumifrons has always been one that I have enjoyed. This was an amazing video though because even as much as I love the basilisks, many are seen as a "cheap pet" and not taken "seriously" for the care they need. I always say this for lizards such as the basilisk in the fact that "tanks are for fish" and lizards like such need large, custom built, *opaque sided*, semi-arboreal enclosures. Overall this was such an amazing video and your care is spot on for this amazing individual basilisk. If you're looking to attempt to breed Plumed Basilisks, do check out "Borayus Exotics" on Facebook & Instagram. The owner is a good friend of mine and he has had many years of experience working with 3/4 basilisk species (B. vitattus, B. plumifrons, & B. basiliscus). So if you're looking to aquire a healthy captive born & bred female as opposed to a $30-$50 sick, wild-caught, B. plumifrons. He'd be the guy to go to!

@TheReptileRoom1 4 года назад
Thanks so much for the kind words. I agree, these are not "cheap pets" in fact any animal shouldn't be considered a cheap pet. I'm glad you enjoyed watching and I hop you keep following along! I saw your pictures on IG and it looks like you have quite the collection. I do follow Borayus Exotics, I did reach out to him to try to get a couple females but never heard back. I like seeing his projects progress, he has some beautiful animals.
