When I'm at the library, I stand in the midst those towering high shelves filled with books whose collective weight is that of several elephants. I spread my arms out and wait for the big earthquake.
This sentence is my life. I can find a New passion (like geology for exemple, and people think its weird but i Will Do it until i Die because if make me feel Alive) and those passions are what i stay Alive for so
I had that fire to write poetry 40 years ago , it lasted about 2 years and died . Here's one i wrote. One upon a time as in many gone by, Strode destiny's man young brave and shy , Unknowingly waving the flag of his youth, a beacon to others to tell him the truth, Vulturous liars and misguided souls, the armies of wrong no right can withhold . Awaiting to place a hand on his heart , his unused resources from him they'll impart . To walk always in sunshine the soul warming light , will not always suffice who seeketh what's right , A peek in the shadows at life's evil roles , Can enlighten but sadly makes young men grow old .
❤️🔥 “Sometimes you climb out of bed in the morning and you think, I'm not going to make it, but you laugh inside, remembering all the times you've felt that way” ❤️🔥 ~ Charles Bukowski 😎
Bukowski speaks about a strange contentness he felt in ordinary life. The interviews were after he achieved success as a writer so his reflections could be rose tinted. But I have always wondered at that feeling, to wake up and be content.
To me, this poem is Bukowski’s way of saying that creativity cannot be forced. You might schedule time into your calendar for when you want to write, but you won’t write anything as good as when the inspiration comes randomly and you feel the urge to write for hours and time flies by. I think it’s more, everyone can have a creative moment, but wait for it to come to you instead of trying to chase it yourself. A lot of people seem to draw the conclusion that he is saying if you’re not a natural don’t ever be creative but I don’t think this.
This is a great video. A writer is someone you would still write even if they knew no one else would ever read a word they wrote. That's it. If that's you, you're a writer.
A passionate reader who's hungry for words must enjoy the melody between every line in a poem , but you just transformed this piece of art to a song that hasn't the same melody as the poem
Trying to write in these last 5 years has been like pulling teeth. I do dread it, as I've tried or at least thought about it almost every day. But.... maybe it was necessary. Maybe I gained something. When George Lucas wrore the original Star Wars script, it went through 4 major drafts. About 90% of the first draft was eventually discarded. He would force himself to sit down at a desk, 9-5 on weekdays. Sometimes, he wouldn't write anything, but he'd sit there anyway. He'd listen to classical music as he wrote. The phrase "May the force be with you" only emerged in the 4th draft.
I used to watch this video in my graduation days. I must admit this poem helped me a lot. Well, came a long way after that. It almost feels nostalgic. Bukowski is indeed a great poet.
a lot of people want to be poets but ask yourself why. Why do you want it? It feels good, it looks good? Being a writer is painful. It is doing at admin job knowing you’re meant for something else. It is not looking for validation because you know you’re talented. It is a lot of being on your own and praying someone would understand.
There’s always something very valuable to look for in human experience. It's a quite mysterious puzzle for one to solve- knowing whether he or she's been endowed with the aptitude of writing. Hope the poet's torch will guide me through that seemingly dark tunnel of uncertainty, of not understanding.
This is the mantra for those who only wait for "divine inspiration." It will only lead to no action and laziness; waiting for nothing. If you don't feed the mind, it will become stagnant. If you don't flex your writing muscles, or use your paint tubes, the ideas will dry up as well as the paints. Genius is not born, it is made.
I've been watching every Bukowski videos and poems. I remember that when I saw this one, I thought: What? Why?. But now I understand, poetry did chose me this late night, and It was beautiful
Thanks a ton for this. And please try finding a more benign kind of music that gives the vibe of an 'inner revelation'; maybe that'd be an even better fit with this piece.
Perhaps it is some kind of " EMERGENCE " that can neither be organised or systematized or even programmed. Thanks a lot for this short clipped video's.
Paddy Jay12 he did it because he had to. There was no choice for him. It was either become a writer or commit suicide. The sun inside him would have burned a hole clear through his gut out into his skull. He never would have survived without it. That's one of the points of the poem: unless not doing it would drive you to a worse life, don't do it. Being a shitty writer isn't worth a wasted life, just like having a good post-office job isn't worth a wasted life.
There was this youtube video that began with this poem and then went on about how it's bad advice for writers (and other artists). It coined the term "going pro" which means something like: keep pushing on your craft and don't wait for inspiration. I love that video, but I can't find it anymore, does anybody know it?
So sad the people that think this means you have to be filled to the brim with “inspiration” every second of the day lol It literally just means if you truly want to do it do it if not why bother wait until something comes along that YOU actually want to do and do it
Do you, like, feel what he's putting onto pages? Is that why you think he's great? I just see his books as nihilistic and meaningless shit(yeah, maybe he's just showing life as it is. Shit, thats depressing, why do you like that? Or are you just sympathetic to him, yeah sounds like people who read novels). Change my mind
@@samsonionut8728 Please try to keep it civil. Personally, I disagree with him because plenty of times writing is hard. Imagine if George R.R Martin gave up every time it didn't "come bursting out of him." He wouldn't have even made it past A Game of Thrones.
let's see,Mr.Bukowski, how many great writers and poets are a contradiction to your poem: Marcel Proust,James Joyce, Wallace Stevens,Charles Baudelaire, etc, etc, etc... writing was an agony for these great geniuses and they worked tirelessly on their poems and novels.there was nothing spontaneous about their masterpieces. I enjoy some of your poems, sir, and I know that since your death, your literary stock has risen. however,in my opinion, you were way too facile and mistook whatever came out your mouth as spontaneous poetry. I will pass on most of your stuff and stick to the works of those who worked hard to develop their genius.
All poets and authors never wrote anything from themselves, neither did they work hard for it. God and destiny falls upon their head like the apple that fell on newtons head. Those words and lines fall upon their head and it was never meant for them, but others that will stumble upon it for years to come.
He is just advicing people to not be something they aren't , what's narcissistic about that? This is what the inscription on his grave stone says too "dont try" Actually he struggled alot , he had a condition because of which he had warts on his face and he was bullied alot, he was always insecure about himself but he was never insecure about his writing , writing was all he ever had .So trust me he knows a thing or two about struggle and what it takes. He didn't care about looking good he was brutally honest about his flaws Here's are a few links to other poems he wrote it will give u an idea about his childhood and who he was.His work was actually pretty inspiring. unless of course you WANT to live... indoors. in this case, you MUST think the way one does when they want to be famous and rich. Most artists don't think about these things and end up poor and hating the arts; and alone, as most people ( really) looks down at an artist unless s/he is famous. Bullshit advice. Easy to misunderstand. But I see, if you're too young and gullible, how it would appeal to you. How do you know you're too young and gullible? You'll want to answer to me, reading this; defensiveness, that's how.
