SO YOU WANT TO BECOME AN ARCHITECT..?
What is Architecture? What do Architects do? How do you become an Architect?
Join a group of Edmonton-based Architects as they present answers to these questions. Speakers will share how they became Architects, the schooling they undertook, and other experiences that feed their practice. There will be lots of time for questions and answers. This event is aimed at students (and any others) who are contemplating a career in architecture and wondering what that might look like and how to get there.
Stephen Faust, Associate, Architect AAA AIBC MRAIC
Stephen’s professional work has ranged from single family residences and temporary installations to large-scaled public projects including schools, transit, recreation and theatre. He is motivated to strengthen architectural identity on the prairies and approaches design with an eye for contextual sensitivity and a desire to bring big ideas into small places. His background in engineering encourages fruitful collaboration with other consultants, especially in multi-disciplinary efforts related to sustainability.
Joy Olagoke, MArch, LEED Green Associate, Certified Passive House Designer, Intern Architect, AAA
Joy is an Intern Architect and Certified Passive House Designer at AVID Architecture. In 2021 she completed her Master of Architecture at the University of Calgary. Her studies have taken her across Canada and she's participated in multiple foreign exchange courses and volunteer excursions. Joy was initially drawn to architecture for its potential to be used as a communication tool and social bridge. She likes to design spaces that act as mixing pots for society.
Olivia Fung, B.EnvD, MArch, Architect, AAA, RAIC
In joining NORR as a Principal, Olivia lends her experience and expertise to a wide variety of projects in scale and typology. Her approach to community work and wellbeing has always influenced how she approaches and focuses her design. Her work ranges from re-positioning small interiors and mix-use spaces to developing new high-end commercial and residential typologies. Outside of her practice, Olivia has focused her time in contributing to the community, earning the recent Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal for her contributions to the Edmonton Chinatown community, sitting on the Board of Directors for the Edmonton International Film Festival and co- hosting the Infill Development in Edmonton Association‘s local podcast.
Ian Mulder, AAA, MRAICn Mulder, AAA, MRA
Before finding architecture, Ian Mulder worked for many years as an artist producing murals, developing educational programs and working with communities throughout Canada and beyond. He later trained as an architect (M. Arch, University of Toronto) and helped to design and manage a variety of commercial and institutional projects. Ian Mulder is currently an architect with the City of Edmonton’s facility planning group, and Chair of the Edmonton chapter of RAIC.
