So you want to get into RPG's? (A Beginners Game Guide)

Never played an RPG before? Here is a video to help with some suggestions of some good beginner/starter (mainly traditional Japanese) RPG's for the SNES, PS1, PS2, PS3, 360, DS, and PSP. I get a ton of messages asking for suggestions on RPG's particularly for these systems, and a good majority of them are from people who have never played an RPG before, so I hope this video will help!
I mention "turn-based RPG's" a lot in this video. It refers to battles that take place where the enemies are typically on one side of the screen and your players are on the other side and you take turns attacking one another. This is most common in "JRPG'S" (Japanese Role Playing Games)

Now that South Park: The Stick of Truth is out, I would highly recommend that. It's very easy to get into, teaches you the basics of a turn-based RPG and is also hilarious.

What is an RPG exactly? It can be so many things. Like you can have a turn-based JRPG and then have a game that is more of an action game with RPG elements, but you still have a healthy amount of RPG in that Action RPG.

I remember the first J-RPG I ever played when I was around 10 years old or so, Final Fantasy VI. I was pretty much sticking to platformers and action games until then... But, Final Fantasy VI got me hooked on RPGs and turned me into an avid RPG collector ever since! I still play the occasional platformer and action game, but nothing beats an RPG!

Just a quick recommendation for anyone who has never ever played an rpg. This one should be pretty obvious to most but, the Pokemon games are probably the best rpgs you could ever play. They'll teach you so much about how to manage a party and due to the many different type match ups you can really learn a great deal of strategy That will help you in more complex rpgs. The best thing about them is how differently you can play them. You can either just go through beefing up your Pokemon with high powered special attacks and high levels or you can use more strategic status attacks like sand attack and thunder wave to nearly cripple your opponent or you can take your time and turn to the more complex world of IV and EV training to get the maximum strength possible out of your Pokemon.

My first jrpg was Pokemon and it is definately one of my best childhood memories! Another series I started out on was Golden Sun! It is such an underrated game and I highly suggest it to anyone who enjoys jrpgs! I am currently playing Super Mario rpg and I am in love with it! I will keep these games in mind when I go shopping for rpgs again! Thanks and keep up the good work!

FINALLY someone who doesn't say FF7 is the best and even says that 9 is the best! Love you :> And let's be serious. I think FF13 is very good...people just got a "new" fighting style and an at start linear world and they were so grumpy with that and ignored the entire game because of that. I think FF13 is a very good game and I think even though it's different, it's not bad at all. Well, FF13-2 is pretty much what I would call "bad" for a full-price game but o'well. Just my 2 cents~

I was a bit disappointed when I started watching and noticed that it was mainly JRPG guide without any western style RPG, but then I realized that I had missed the description which mentioned "mainly traditional Japanese", so it's fine - so I suppose if I ever took a look into that direction then this would be a good guide for me (not starting with the easiest one, though). Final Fantasy games are something I've never actually played, since I'm more leaned towards western RPGs, but it might be worth a try. I don't say that I couldn't find something to like on JRPG side, as well. Just haven't really looked into that much. Maybe some day. If I had to suggest something for a first-timer with RPGs, but not necessarily totally inexperienced player generally speaking, I'd probably say: First step (for a first-timer): -Elder Scrolls Series from Morrowind (III) to Skyrim (V) -Fallout 3 (and probably the upcoming 4) Their stat and skill system is pretty basic, and a lot of the game is based on action (first person shooting), so they aren't very hard to get into, unlike some older computer RPGs based on D&D rules (Dungeons and Dragons), which you'd have to learn first. Generally more hand-holding by the game and it's interface than on the ones below. Second step (continuing deeper, not so good for the first timer): -Dragon Age Origins (or any other DA) It has more depth than the ones above. Eventually you have a party of characters to manage, with their skills and stats. The rules are reminiscent of D&D tabletop games (and their computer game imported counterparts), but are made from the scratch - not being as complicated as real D&D. They are more easily understood and less complex. Good step towards bit more complex character and skill system, if you're looking to play a game based on real D&D rules later on. -Fallout 1 & 2 Has skills, stats, perks - all quite self explanatory and the range is not overly wide and complex for beginner RPG'er, granted he/she has some gaming background. However, picking good set of starting skills and stats and then playing your character against the skills you've picked can get harsh, and the game may punish you, so in that context these games are not easiest ones by difficulty level, although skill and character system is not very deep. For ones who like a lot of dialogue and story. -Wasteland 2 Seemingly complex skill and stat plus character progression system, party creation, but you can solve one problem with so many different skills, that the game won't be so hard, after all. Still not one of the easiest ones. -Planescape: Torment A bit like Fallout 1-2, a lot of story, some skills and character development, companions and party management, but not overly complex. Third step: -Baldur's Gate 1-2 -Icewind Dale 1-2 -Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura -Temple of Elemental Evil -Realms of Arkania 1-3 (avoid the remake!) ... Any of the many, many old D&D rules based cRPG if you like retro. There's a ton. As a good side, if you take time to learn D&D rules then you have very large selection of games to play with so that you understand your actions. and many more! Higher difficulty level. Real imported D&D rulesets, full party creations of companions. Generally rather hard games with more complexity on their core rules to learn for the player. Just a quick brain-fart. :)

Very cool. Starter guide. my first introduction to the genre was breath of fire and of course that got me hooked. Since then I've hunted for as many different RPGs as possible. @similaritiesendhere
@similaritiesendhere 10 лет назад
He said Shin Megami Tensei: Persona was "pokemonesque". The game that lets me summon Lucifer is "pokemonesque"... right. Pokemon is an SMT rip off. That's close enough. Who doesn't know about pokemon?
@JambleBramble
@JambleBramble 10 лет назад
similaritiesendhere Oh yeah, because those capsule machines in Japan had nothing to do with CAPSULE MONSTERS. There are obvious similarities, but most people know what Pokemon is and an ever-growing, but still minimal amount of people know what SMT is, so it's obviously sensible to compare those portions of the game to someone who isn't familiar with the latter..
@similaritiesendhere
@similaritiesendhere 10 лет назад
SycoMantis91 Shin Megami Tensei lets you capture monsters and put them in containers to use for battle later. If the most original thing about Pokemon is calling the containers, "capsules", then whoopdie-doo! Dumbing down a game and removing potentially offensive content is a great way to attract a lot more buyers (children), but... so is putting cheap toys in Happy Meals. A 7 year old would pick a Happy Meal over lobster dinner. How old were you when stopped eating happy meals?
@JambleBramble
@JambleBramble 10 лет назад
Dumbing down is greatly underestimating the complexity of the competitive aspect of Pokemon, it'd be far from the first thing to borrow a concept and still be good on its own. I'm 22 and still keep up with the Pokemon games just as much as SMT, and happy meals are still good whereas lobster tastes like ass dipped in mucus.
@similaritiesendhere
@similaritiesendhere 10 лет назад
There's a certain generation of gamers that also believe that FPS games that mostly focus on multiplayer are better than their predecessors. That's fine by me as long as they realize that they're the reason modern shooters have shitty stories, forgettable characters, no emotional impact, and nothing new to say. Every new CoD is just a yearly map pack update and every new Pokemon is just a yearly Pokedex update. SMT has never been that cynical.

Then, I came across this video on my recommended videos section and thanks to this video, I'll probably get back into the genre. I totally agree with that, it is my favourite game of all time as it happens too. And if any beginners of RPGs want my opinion of where to begin, then I can't recommend Final Fantasy IX enough, I'm not just being biased, it really is a game that is so easy to get in to, the ability and battle systems are very easy to understand, and the story starts out so simple and fun that you can just take your time with it. It also has the best soundtrack of any game I have ever played too, just to let you know :)

It is a great game for newbies to the jRPG genre. I remember getting it when I was probably 12 or 13. I had beaten FFII (IV) and absolutely loved it so I picked this up seeing the Final Fantasy name. I remember beating it quickly and putting it to the side. One day I stayed home sick from school and picked it up, ended up blasting through it in a single day, lol. Good times.

I'm not one to play RPG games. I'm honestly not that open to the idea of playing one. But, I love these reccomendations based on what my friend play's. (He plays RPG games) and this is a good list. Thanks for the list!

Haha well I don't know if the final fantasy's and chrono cross count as a wide range (amazing games though), but I have a couple recommendations. For the ps2 I HIGHLY recommend trying out dark cloud, and dark cloud 2 if you enjoy the first. For the ps3 from the traditional rpgs you seem to enjoy, I would probably say that ni no kuni: wrath of the white witch is a safe bet if you can get past the sorta kid anime art style. Also if you want a good arpg that's a bit mature, check out nier. I could make a list of about 20+ more but you may not even want the recommendations anymore seeing as this was posted a month ago. (Ohh and if you like the final fantasies and haven't played them all yet, I would suggest X, and IX)
