@@yaldabaoth2 there’s a whole rules lite segment of the gaming world that would call that claim into question. I’m enjoying the Kingmaker game enough that I’m probably rolling right into this one when I finish, but outside of a video game, the closest I’m coming to PF is the PF for Savage Worlds books. I respect a lot of their worldbuilding and design, but absent a computer doing much of the book-keeping for me, I’m not touching their system itself with a standard-issue 10 foot pole anymore. My tastes have just shifted away from the simulationist side of the hobby. That’s not to say rules-heavy games shouldn’t exist. PF, GURPS, and the like appeal to a set of gamers that deserve to have their wants met just the same as all the people playing Fate or PbtA should theirs, but acting like any move towards streamlining is a move towards an apocalypse for the industry is pretty farcical. Hell, PF’s origin was an act of streamlining, keeping what people liked about 3.X D&D, streamlining what they didn’t (I played a ton of 3.5, and not once did I roll up a cleric without at least 1 divine meta magic feat once those hit the table b/c those rules were a mess I had no interest in dealing with for example, or CMB/CMD vs D&D’s system), and not throwing the baby out with the bath water (as many felt 4e did).
He does go pretty in depth on a lot of subjects in the vid though. If you are familiar with crpg’s most the learning curve isn’t that bad. I only played dos2 before this and I think I got a good grasp on the game after act I.
@@yaldabaoth2 Absolutely not, this game is the perfect example of: How to NOT adapt a TTRPG into a video game, because unless you have extensive knowledge of said TTRPG, you can basically do nothing.
That rule doesn't apply to a video-game stimulating the game. Otherwise I would have dipped after act 1 and charged into the worldwound solo or more than likely live and never come back. My gm would hate me but they can't name a campaign that hasn't gone off the rails. If you are reading this Justin do you remember the half of year we spent trying to start a tavern/brothel/ale house instead of stopping the tyrant king. FYI we finally killed the king by sending him a working girl to poison him because our establishment became so renowned and high class. To quote Justin "I am immensely disappointed most of my story went to waste" but it was fun tho
I also add in dead companions rise after combat. Anything that forces me to stop what I'm doing and take care of something because an enemy got a lucky roll detracts from the fun. Conversely, I also set enemy stats and difficulty to normal and 1.0, throw in more enemies and more behaviors to offset the fact that I'm making the game easier with my other choices. All of that puts the game in a sweet spot for me. Very enjoyable without being too hard or too easy.
I played on core and about a third of the way through I went in and changed this to on… “Removing conditions on rest” saved me soooo much time the rest of the way through.
@@fartloudYT in kingmaker I had issues but if you explore a tiny bit and have a proper built healer the only real issue you have is running out of death ward
taking care of status conditions kinda falls out of the scope of the campaign, you're a commander of a crusade with access to the kingdom's resources and thousands of people under your banner. Curing a status condition shouldn't be a problem unless it's some kind of a curse outside of the capabilities of the kingdom's best healers.
The problem is that is kind of stupid in a Game where 99.9% of shit does Conditions/Status and there are Million Encounters. Unlimited Resurrection is bad n00b cheese though. The Time Limit thing is also Bad Prehistoric Gimmick that no one needs in a +100 Hour Hardcore Crpg in 2022. Owlcat dropped the Ball Hard on that one when doing Kingmaker.
I work a roughneck job. My coworker taught me a trick...puttin my phone inside my hardhat. I can hear everything even with ear protection on. Thank you for this
I picked up this game after playing baldurs gate, put 5 hours in it just today and having a blast! It's gonna be even cooler once I get out of the character creator
As someone who has played divinity and wasteland 3 thanks to Morty, so far the most difficult part of this game is figuring out how and what to use to buff yourself before battle. There are so many spells my goodness, the games story and dialogue and scenery is absolutely amazing, this is one heck of a high quality game
I have played RPGs all my life, but not typically traditional D&D, although I know how it works. I came here cause I couldn't figure out what to do once i level up, let alone gave up trying to create a character.
Agree for the most part, but I think there's way too much dialogue. Every minor NPC will blurt out paragraph after paragraph of needlessly long-winded fluff. They could've conveyed the point of most conversations in half the amount of words.
@@dmtaboo_truth7052 I finished the game about two weeks ago, oh man after about 85% into the game, I kinda wanted it to be over. The ending is beautiful storytelling, but man it was just way too long. I finished it on the ps4 and let me tell ya, the loading screens were BRUTAL. I think more than 20% of my 100 hour playtime was loading screens
There is a certain flare of sincerity in all of your reviews man. After beating BG3 I decided to look back and play one of the CRPG’s I missed out on and just every video you put out is so informative. Really appreciate it.
Man, to be honest I would totally watch a 4 hour video of you going through every class in the game. I am reasonably experienced with the pathfinder TTRPG and have over 200 hours played in WotR but I still learned a lot.
Get these feats and auto win basically: shake it off, combat reflexes, seize the moment(don't get doesn't stack with outflank), outflank = auto win basically
@@Nostromo2144 Correct and they are totally worth it. Actually, drop seize the moment as it apparently doesn't stack. And Shake it off needs at least 4 characters. However, pets count and pets can get teamwork feats after level 4. so one pet being ridden and you can automatically always be outflanking and on crit both pet and character can attack of opportunity. Shake it off is a personal choice as its up to 4 saves and with a +6 resistance cloak you basically have +10 saves with a single item and one feat which i think is worth it. After you get outflank, you need to try and get 18-20 crit threat range, then you get improve crit weapon at level 9/11. You start criting every 4th attack. If your entire team is melee and you have pets thats anywhere from 8 to 9 attacks after one party member crits. (My current team has 5 pets 6 melee)
For someone who's tried to start 4/5 playthroughs in the past year on PC but bounced off everytime, I can't describe how MASSIVE of a help this video is. Was always looking for something akin to this. Thank you so much!!! ❤️❤️
Thank you for what you said at 3:23. I am so tired of people telling me I am not real gamer, because I prefer easy/story difficulty. The mythic path guides were really useful, especially the devil. Now I will not run around panicking with my current character, looking everywhere on the map and not understanding why I cannot find it (I chose to be a lich for the first ascension). I usually don't comment on videos, because of how needlesly rude people can be. But! you are always so respectful (and informative), that I felt, it is safe the join the discussion. If I ever work up the courage, I might comment on some of your other videos. < 3
Dont let them discourage you. I mostly play on harder difficulties but for me there are few games I just wanna play for fun or for the story. What comes to mind right now is Resident Evil Series where I dont wanna deal with a single zombie that can take whole extended magazine and still fuckin survive. Its your game no game is perfect and there are bugs/glitches/shitty hitboxes. And especially game like this where everything is just random (which is the reason I dont play those type of rpg games because I cant stand the rng). Play how you want thats why the devs put the difficulties into their games.
Keep in mind, these are derived from tabletop RPGs. That means these games are *meant* to have a Dungeon Master, and a good DM is constantly tweaking the difficulty of the game to fit what the tone of the session calls for. When you are playing a solo CRPG like PF: WotR, that responsibility falls on your shoulders.
tbh even if i cant realy understand it (maybe bcs i actually play the table top) there is no shame in playing the game on low difficulty just to enjoy the story.
Especially the pathfinder games can be so funny to play on lower difficulty. I've beaten the game on hardest difficulty without to much problems since I spend literally days on creaating min/max builds and exploiting everything. But since finishing it once I'm just playing on normal or casual mode and make really funny jank builds. There are so much funny builds than those who spent the first 2 minutes on every map to just cast the buffs on every character. Especially since the classes have a very different power level and classes like the swort saint have special abilities that deal with the problems you have on the highest difficulty.
This was like an answer to my prayers. Started playing yesterday, and this was exactly what I was looking for. When I saw it on my youtube feed this morning I was like how did i miss this?! Until i realized you just released it. Thanks so much for the great content as always.
Both games are enjoyable (to me) - Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous. Own both. They also have a Warhammer 40K (Rogue Trader) CRPG game as their next offering. Though I hope Owlcat isn't done with the Pathfinder world too.
@@marchuitt I have a guess that they're going to come back with the Pathfinder 2E ruleset next time they make a PF game, and I really hope it comes true because I love the 3-action economy combat rules.
It's worth mentioning that taking *only* "several days" to put together a video that is almost two hours long, well scripted (or well-spoken if not necessarily scripted), engaging, and informative, is an absolute triumph of focus. Thanks for putting this together - I remain 'on the fence' about this game after watching this video, but it was tremendously helpful, and an excellent indicator of what I'm in for should I take the dive. Sub-earning content right here, to be sure!
By default, this game runs in real time with pause mode. Playing as that, I found this game quite hard even on normal dificulty. Changing it to turn based mode made the game A LOT easier. And the most curious thing about this is the fact that A LOT of skills/spells that seemed to be useless while playing the game in real time, became increadible usefull while playing on turn based. Certainly because the pathfinder system was built to be played in turns, so, not all skills/abilities/spells would translate well in a real time scenario.
@@azku Yeah, that's what I usally do. RTwP for trash mobs, dealing with them only using normal auto attacks and TB when dealing with bosses OR when I want to experiment something new (new build, new spell/skill, etc). As it happens with D&D, in PF your characters become reaaaaaally strong as their level increases, and that's what I love in these systems, the tangible feeling of power progression. A LVL1 wizard is weaker than a bug, but a LVL 20 wizard is like the personification of the armageddon.
For poison: you can suppress the effects of poison with delay poison. It will usually expire by the time the spell is over. Even better: preventively using delay poison makes a character immune to poison and that spell lasts a long time.
Great video! Would love an 'Intermediate player's guide' to help cover the mid and high levels of the game, and what's important to success at that part of the game. Low level PF plays a lot like DnD, and the concepts are simple, but once you get to level 10 or so, and you have so many abilities and levels to play with, it's hard determine what's important and not important.
Holy. There are a lot of things I wish I could experience again...going through that learning curve of WOTR is not one of them. Nonetheless a glorious video that will aid the beleaguerd masses in their struggles, thank you!
This video actually made me feel better about dying hopelessly time and time again. I picked a core difficulty thinking this is how the game is supposed to be played and I regularly run into situations that easily, if do not kill the entire party outright, kill at least 1 or 2 characters. And ress scrolls/diamonds are a royal pain to bring and use. If this game is not designed to be playable purely on good tactics and choices, and you are left on the mercy of the RNG, then I am fine with lowering the difficulty without hurting my pride.
I’m a veteran of the system and I always watch these videos because sometimes there are little details I miss. Like extra enemies giving more xp, I hadn’t even considered it (though it obviously makes sense.) I also keep an eye on them as easy crash courses for table top players. Obviously not all applicable but a lot of the mechanical stuff is the same.
Man you're amazing! I'm waiting for a console release and this is going to be a life saver. I remember playing Kingmaker, I was so lost and the game was incredibly confusing for me for like 20-30 hours until I felt comfortable playing and ended up restarting it. You are going to help many people, including me. Thank you so much for your work and I hope you're feeling better!
@@joeymacaroni4498 only moved from the beginning to the end of the month. Tbh I would rather they don't release it until it runs well. I couldn't finish kingmaker as kept crashing every 10mins in the last act. I ended up rage quitting and watched the ending on YT. I was playing it on my ps5 as well. After originally giving up on my PS4 Pro due to the load times, but the ps5 sped that up drastically.
You're the man!!! I tried out kingmaker. Got most of the way through but after learning more about the game realized I'd messed up my main character and some companions. This tutorial has been unbelievably helpful. Thank you so much
Even tho I love this CRPG games and I'm actually playing WOTR right now. God, the entry to these kind of games is hardcore af, a 2 hour video guide om how to start the game is honestly crazy.
The annoying thing about Core difficulty is that it's the base pathfinder rules (or as close to it as possible) as you said. However, enemies are scaled up to be as much as twice or higher the CR they would be in tabletop (plus they get other bonuses too!). I originally went with Core difficulty when playing the game and was shocked to see how much more powerful everything I fought was compared to what I was familiar with. It's like they expected people to save scum and minmax like crazy and designed encounters around that. So, if you want to play using the base rules (normal crits, 100% damage taken), but don't want to deal with massively buffed enemies, it takes some research and knowledge to craft a custom difficulty.
This is the first game in this genre i have ever played. I have only played a few hours and was completely overwhelmed this really made in a lot easier to understand. Thank you so much
After struggling with Pathfinder for a while, I stumbled upon this video and it helped me a lot. Now I have completed the game and it's become one of my favorites, so thanks for making it easier for some of us :)
Late to the party here. I've never made it past chapter 3, basically I've found that I want to do something different. Many of you can relate. But now, my current play through, for the first time I'm using turn-based combat. I find this to be much more fun AND now many of the Feats and stats make sense. Initiative, Movement Base, Quick Draw etc etc make sense and have their uses!
Just bought this game today and it's quite overwhelming. So much classes and features. Definitely glad i found this video to help understand the features.
Brought the game when it was release, brought all the DLC but i could never finish Act 2 because there are too many things that I don't understand in the game and I'm relying too much on YT guides, This Video really helps learning about the basics and In my next Run of the game I have more understanding on whats more happening and try to play without always consulting on online guides, Thank You!!
26:00 "Going to bring up a tab and if you don't know what you're looking at means nothing". lol, exactly why I'm here. I love these complex games and it's a joy trying to figure everything out. Thanks for your guide, it's enjoyable thus far and I expect to really appreciate the next 80 minutes as I delve into this game. Thanks again.
This game is just amazing. The game where you are the Boss. I play crpgs since 90s, and i played a fair share of games until now. My favorite ones are fantasy rpg genre. Through that time until now there were some really amazing games to play and for me this one tops the cake. Pathfinder WOTR is so well done its unreal, no other game i played was done in such a way. You can feel its made by fans of DnD and roleplaying. Finished my first playthrough in about 250 hours, as a good guy legend. It made me think about all other games i played before that werent done with such quality. I really hope Owlcat raises the bar for everyone. Im currently going through Kingmaker and i must say its up there with WOTR, unreal games with such replay value. The depth you can go with builds, classes, ways of playing . I have never seen it before. Whoever is thinking of playing WOTR, play Kingmaker first, thats just my advice. Even though the games are not connected. In the first one you play to become a king, then in the second one you become a legend, divine being, demon... there are many other paths to take. With Larian, Owlcat became my favorite game developer, their next one will probably be even better than WOTR...
I’m a huge noob with Pathfinder but I’m trying this one out. I don’t understand what’s so fun about 1,000 options and stats to tinker around with in character creation. But maybe soon, I’ll love 1,000 options and stats to tinker around with in character creation.
Favorite DnD style rpg. Its everything i imagined a tabletop game being from the rule set to the incredible art style. BALDUR'S GATE III is awesome but i have to play it on easiest level currently to get the satisfaction and intuitive gameplay i get from the very start with PATHFINDER: WRATH OF THE RIGHTEOUS. Incredible time for the genre and one can only imagine what is to come. Thanks for the incredible guides. Truly you are a most generous master of CRPGs ☕
This is a FANTASTIC video! I’ve watched your channel for a long time, starting with your DOS2 content, and I know you have the same love for WotR. I’m not familiar with the Pathfinder system so I’ve been overwhelmed with all of the mechanics, keeping me from really enjoying the game, but this guide is exactly what I needed. Thanks dude and congrats on the recent YT successes so far!
There are a few beginner things - seemingly small things that do a lot. The most important one for me was, to immediately after you get a new companion, go into his skills, spells, etc. Always when you get someone new (especially spell casters) a lot of their spell slots will be empty. It's immediately felt with Sosiel, you will get him and think he's not very usefull until you realise he has a lot of spells, especially helpfull summon monster and elemental spells evening the odds. Overall the key rule I feel to this game is, that you really get all the tools you need to beat any situation, just open your eyes, look at the tools and use them wisely. There is always a spell, tactic, formation, etc. To beat the current situation. You are weaker than the opponents you fight and your characters will die unless you play smart and learn.
I honestly wouldn’t mind a class guide even though you brought it up in the end I would love to know any niche you found with other classes. More knowledge is always better. Thanks for your hard work!
Personally I'm a big fan of the long form video essay format (My usual vids that I run in the background are from Joseph Anderson, Neverknowsbest, PatricianTV, to name a few), so seeing your first hour+ video is very gratifying to me. You normally 100% games, so I always felt like you probably have more to say in many of the past videos and just edited it all down to 30min- because "that's normal". But I can see you making hour long videos and use every minute well, so, for me, it was always a pity to see your videos "cut short".
Thanks for the guide! Finally got this game after really enjoying Kingmaker. I appreciate you mentioning how it’s okay to play on any difficulty. I’d actually rather play on casual or even normal than story but. I remember some encounters in Kingmaker being bullshit for me even on story, and I’d rather have fun and get the story. I can always replay on a higher difficulty later
Your speech about the difficulty is really meant a lot to me.. because i always play normal and sometimes i feel stupid after looking people playing in hard or above mode.. 😂😂 thanks
Thanks for this, I had planned to watch your earlier stuff on WotR before the console release, this is a bonus. I had put Kingmaker aside for a bit while I cleared Solasta (the kingdom management was becoming a bit much in Kingmaker, I've automated it since last night), but have now thrown myself back into it and hope to clear it in time for WotR. Many thanks again, this will help so much.
Late to the party, about to buy the game on sale and found this a good intro course. I remain very impressed with your ability to deliver concise information with minimal spoilers!
Great video! As someone who used to wait for a console release I can imagine how happy I'd be finding such video around the time I'm about to play the game. Thank you very much. Watching even though I already learned most of this
I have 266hrs in WoTR and atleast half of those hours were spent making like 30+ characters and just figuring out the game A guide like this would've been real great at the beginning
And i thought the Dark Souls series was the most cryptic and confusing (yet fun) game to play. Thanks for this guide, it's certainly invaluable and highly appreciated!
Thank you for uploading this video, as a casual D&D enjoyer it was overwhelming the character creation, I created a human cleric and decided not to show the flaming sword to the village and now I feel guilty, hopefully after this video I'll get a better grasp
Love the content! I’ve recently started my journey and im loving the game. BG3 was my first introduction to D&D and that felt overwhelming at first. But, I feel all of that was the perfect starting point to not be overwhelmed by this game. It feels like a natural progression for people like me who discovered this universe through BG3. So for me, the barrier to entry feels non existent and I hope other people who need to scratch that BG3 itch find this well.
Glad its helpful, worth mentioning that this is not the same universe as DnD though. Pathfinder uses a different ruleset and setting. This game uses Pathfinder 1e specfically.
Thank you for this very informative and easy to understand video! I started playing WotR a couple weeks ago without knowing the pathfinder system, and now I feel like I could probably change the difficulty to daring, and that’s mostly because I’ve been watching your videos on classes, combat, spellcasting etc. Subscribed, of course!
So I came from Rogue Trader and since I really love that game, I wanted to see owlcat previous games. And I'm glad of the work they made to make Rogue Trader more comprehensible. It truly is a blessing. Pwotr seems absolutely insane to understand and to just get into which is a big problem for a crpg, it's a genre that need to survive. You can make a deep game without being very hard to understand and appreciate. So thank you Mortismal for this video that helps a lot
Pathfinder wotr, is important to me as well op. Seem like a good dude just trying to help others enjoy this wonderful game. Keep making content. You've earned this sub.
Great timing. I bought PF WOTR at the last Steam sale but been scared to try it as I’ve only play D&D 5e so far. After this I’ll finally give it a go. Thanks.
@@hirdbarding3399 I mean, I agree to some degree, but when you get to the point that demon lords have stats that'd curbstomp their pnp counterpart, there is such a thing as overcompensation for the fact that this is a six person party.
ok so i had a character from core difficulty i thought id learn the game.... 239 hours later im still in act three and hit a wall so this video is gonna save me thank you so much! this is so well done! I do think im gonna restart the game on a lower difficulty to learn
This game is ruthless on higher diffs, even the normal diff is quite a challenge. On the highest diff the game becomes pure mathematics, where I did feel there is only one right way to build a char, one right spell setup etc
Great Timing for this with the console release / enhanced edition coming out. Already have 250 hours myself on PC but this isnt exactly the most easy game to get into.
This is how I imagine my grandma sees me playing a super simple game like halo 2. I got to the hour an 20 min mark of the video and I forgot so much. There's just so much information ☠️
I've been watching this video off and on as I've been traveling by train a lot lately and every time I open it again I've already forgotten everything from the week before
I already sunk 300+ hours into the game, so there was not too much new information. Still concise, interesting, and I still learned a few new things. Always a pleasure.
It would be interesting a video on what is the strenghts and weaknesses of turn-based vs real time combats in this game, particularly when using a controller (due to the console releases).
Real time with pause - faster combat with more need for micro and quick play. Turn base is a lot slower and can break some immersion for some but gives a lot more control.
@Regill Derenge sorry I meant immersion of combat, not in the RP part of the game. Many better words to use, could even sub in the word "fun" for some. There is a reason FF games now have action based combat. I prefer turn base and personally only want turn base in FF games however I get others that want full action.
I love WOTR! Thank you for putting this guide together in a clear and comprehensive way. The metamagic section was very helpful. As always, the content you produce continues to be informative.
I've been playing some form of D&D since '82. Playing Pathfinder since it came out. Long-term WoW player as well. Hoping this is the intersection of the two. Thanks for the guide. The game will be here Friday
I honestly wished I used a guide going into this game because I geniuenly did not expect it to overwhelm me so much especially the crusade mechanics, luckily I managed to completely grasp it after slowly heading to drezen which took me a day of playing. The biggest hit is the romance guides, as a rpg player it was foolish of me to not look up a guide for whatever characters I wanted to romance because by the time I see they put any interest in me I realised I messed up a bunch of times and chose wrong options and im almost 60 hours into the game so you can imagine restarting is not an option. Anyone looking to get into this game use a guide, especially this video or you will end up like me regretting alot or things and thinking about restarting.
Having played for over three hundred hours, and still not understanding 50% of builds, i can definitely say that playing on easy/normal is advisable for a new player. Story mode might be a bit too easy, since it nerfs enemies so hard that learning game mechanics can be unecessary, which can hurt if you try to up the difficulty later. Selective metamagic is great, and spell penetration + greater spell penetration are important for magic users. I didn't even know spell resistance was a thing until my third playthrough, and I had already played Kingmaker once over too. Teamwork feats are also pretty solid, especially back-to-back and outflank for melee characters, provided you get them for all/most of your frontline partymembers. This is a good guide, tho if im prefectly honest i haven't watched the full video yet. Regardless its good for newbies to have such good resources to go to learn, especially because of pathfinder's difficulty.
Wow. This is a great video. But I truly don’t understand how anyone has fun playing on a difficulty that comes down to rng (aka luck). Having to keep reloading the same fight until I just get lucky enough to win, doesn’t sound fun to me. Nothing against anyone who enjoys it because you paid for the game and I’m glad you are enjoying it your way. It’s more that I don’t get it. All that said, the devs giving us so many options to play this game however we want is awesome! I’ll pick this up some day and know I’ll thoroughly enjoy it.
I have played Kingmaker but never felt like I mastered the game. And this game seems to have alot of new things. It's perfect to have this for console release :)
I watched all these compiled videos before and still an absolute joy to watch this one; I can’t get enough of this game and I have a couple more mystic path play throughs left for the definitive edition 🎉
Great video! I've been following you since the game's release last year so I've watched most of your WOTR videos already, but I think this is a great resource for new players. Hopefully this will become the definitive new player's guide for the game (and get your channel some more much deserved exposure).
I bought the game on steam’s spring sale and I don’t know if I should regret it or not. I’m 6 hours into the game and it’s just too much. The only CRPGs I played and finished are Divinity: OS 1&2. And compared to them, WotR is needlessly complex. Even with the custom difficulty settings, it’s still doesn’t feel fun if you don’t understand how anything works. I wanted an immersive experience to get lost in for a few hours after long hard day and I don’t think this game is doing it for me. At least not right now. But I won’t give up on it just yet. Thanks for the video, Mort!
This looks good but I dare not buy on console plus its suppose to be deeper than dos2 or I'm afraid it's just complicated for the sake of being complicated?
I enjoyed the couple hours i played. im happy my tobii eyetracker works on this game. i never played ttrpg until i couldn't use my arms. But i love them now
It is the massive amounts of buffs you need to manage because the math spikes you have to deal with make it to complicated for no reason other then they wanted to pump numbers. Everyone has to have blur and bless and barkskin and more and more It is why I like Baldurs gate 3 more because you can play the game with decent buffs but not so much so that if hinders the play style Just my opinion
