Spectacular video Dan. I love this series as you get to see what only the train crews usually get to see. Very entertaining and thanks for sharing.

The spring colors are really lovely. It's obvious that agriculture and fruit growing are a big business in this region. The fields and orchards along the tracks are tidy. Both tracks are in good shape, although the UP side is a bit better maintained. This is a nice area and your video shows it amazingly Dan.

Thank you Z and yes very agricultural related all through the valley. Ha yeah it is easier to see which one is the mainline isn't it? Glad you enjoyed!

Thanks Dan -your video invokes great memories along with the lushness of the valley.We had a motor home built in Coburg and the factory service center was just outside Harrisburg. We also had work done in Junction City. The valley is gorgeous. One fascinating ag products was mint. When harvesting the whole area smelled like candy. We would sometimes park overnight on the street paralleling the UP in J C next to the water tower-great train watching. The fire whistle in the middle of the night-not so great. Thanks again for this treat!

Wow. I knew the OE and Brooklyn Sub got close together, but this is insane! Two mainlines just feet apart! Great video, thanks for sharing. It's also interesting to note how the channel in the Willamette has shifted in the last century, and now there is dry land under that bridge's lift span.

It's pretty cool and I have been fortunate to capture a train on each line at the same time a few times. Might have to do a compilation video of that someday. Yes most definitely has not been used in a long time.

There have been a few times running along the OE or on the UP to have a train on the other track, usually going the opposite direction. Great video, Dan, it looks pretty familiar to me, though Ha haha. BTW, the field of yellow plants are either turnips or mustard seed.

Great stuff! I've looked that area over on Google Maps and such, but this really lets you see it. Hard to imagine a time when there was shipping and the drawbridge was needed. Obviously, the river channel has changed over time.

Thank you Ted and yes it's crazy to me there was ever river traffic this far up at any point in time.

Thank you for uploading this video for our enjoyment, Dan! It was nice to run down these railroad tracks between Junction City and Harrisburg, Oregon. As we went along the tracks, I noticed that there were several locations where the Portland & Western tracks went over a trestle structure while the parallel Union Pacific tracks were on a fill. Was there a depression in the landscape that Portland & Western must cross that does not exist on the Union Pacific right of way?
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 2 месяца назад
Thank you Thomas glad you enjoyed! If memory serves me well from being a kid I do remember the UP also having wood trestles like the P&W tracks in different places along this section but I think over time they just replaced them all with fill.
@snchilders

Looks like the drawbridge on the P&W hasn't been painted in a very, very long time, either.

That Mavic is a remarkably smooth flyer. A bit scary to fly with powerlines on the left, trees on the right and about four feet between them right over the rails.
@TheRailfanDan

It is and only so many years flying these things do I feel comfortable flying next to things so close. Everything on the screen looks closer than it really is most of the time.

@@TheRailfanDan I tried flying my Phantom 3 over a tiny stream bounded by bushes and trees. No proximity detectors and the Phantom is "twitchy" on the sticks. But it worked and combined with audio from that same stream makes a great little movie clip. But I nearly dunked it in the stream.

That was fun. Love the different views of the old drawbridge and the water and scenery in general. I'm curious to know if you have ever flown your drone down the tracks toward on oncoming train and flown over it. I have not scene all your video's so don't know. Music was perfect for this too.

Very strange... The UP line is basically on a fill but the other line seems to be a series of bridges..
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 2 месяца назад
I believe the UP used to also have wood bridge sections on their line like that as well but have upgraded it all to fill over time.

That's Oregon, the homeless and garbage state. s the Portland and Western line was the first built and the land has changed significantly by the time UP was built, resulting in drained land. I wonder how often the Portland and Western does a detailed inspection of their bridges?
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 29 дней назад
I am not sure on that but yes the homeless garbage is just so out of control these days with no end it sight it seems.

Nice. Do you know why it was necessary to have a drawbridge on the Willamette River?
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 2 месяца назад
I do not and am still baffled to think river traffic ever made it that far up river but I guess at one point in history they thought it was necessary!
