Social Media and THE BEST ELK HUNTERS on Earth

I get endless questions about how I fell about X or Y social media elk hunting influencer. For one, I only have opinions on hunters I have spent time with. Two, who really cares? Why does it matter? Well, I discuss all of that in this video!
This is part of my weekly series where I talk about a hunting topic with minimal edits for 5 minutes or less... Just a heads up, I usually end up talking about it for 6-8 minutes, because I apparently have no self control.

I am a Full Time Guide in NM & CO.. Just a Guide, not an Outfitter. I jave guided 111 successful Elk Hunts in 7yrs. Being in Guide in a high volume schedule and hunting 16-18 back to back weeks means i have to pull out every trick I've learned to stay in Elk and find new Elk. I tell the young Guides... One full season like this is worth 5-10yrs worth of hunting experience packed into one season for them and if they can stay on and keep a open mind they learn alot. Id like to learn how to extend my season and get another 3-4 months of income tho Guiding Hunters.

I hear ya! Sounds like you’re staying busy. Your math is about right, one season guiding archery/rifle seasons is going to be equivalent to 6-8 years as an average elk hunter. Just a reps/time thing. Best suggestion I can give you on extending your season is to get into fishing guiding or buy an outfitting biz. Then your offseason is filled with booking, prep for the season, etc… good luck man 👍

I’ve seen some of the bigger social media guys (Hanes, Rinella, etc.) say it themselves that there are guys out there that they look up to and who they have gained tons of knowledge from who don’t have any social media presence at all. What these guys do though is present hunting in a way that is appealing and entertaining to a lot of people and they help to motivate people to get out there and get after it.

Fair assessment. There's a huge "holier than thou" mentality across the hunting community. People tend to judge others for trophy hunting, hunting from roads, hunting private property, etc., and I think half the time, it's purely born from jealousy. If I was rich and had the means to own a huge ranch or pay access fees, you bet your ass I'd take advantage of those opportunities. I'd still hunt public land as well or DIY hunts, just as I would still drink PBR from time to time, even if I could afford $500 bottles of wine every night. In the end, we're all on the same team. Just cause someone does it differently than you doesn't mean they're wrong.

As usual, excellent insights on a topic Sir. For me the issues with social media are less about who’s the best or who killed the biggest elk it’s more about public perception. Whether we like it or not there is an increasing scrutiny on hunting which is primarily based on public opinion and can result in new regulations such as decreased tag allotment. To me the glorification and near constant promotion from some people showing long range 800, 1000 yard or More hunting shots is doing nothing but damaging perception of all hunters. These shots are almost always followed with laughing and some cheesy comment “I dumped him” or “I smoked him” and more laughing. This isn’t a good look for us. If people want to engage in that type of hunting and behavior thats their choice but having dozens and dozens of accounts positing that kind of content for the world to see isn’t the best idea.

Chuck Adams & the like, which likely most of them aren't even on the radar. The guys, before our current info on demand society, learned by being outdoors day in day out year after year & pretty sure if they were asked they did it for personal achievement. Nothing wrong with being proud of your achievements, but they don't have time for all the social media. I use our tech to short the learning curve, but they didn't have that option & the only way to get to where they wanted to be is through determination & hard work. Those are the guys I look too for gold nuggets & then for the newer generations.. it's guys & gals that either have, or are, guides, outfitters or die hard bowhunters who aren't out there for social media reasons, but simply because that's who they are, what they do, & to help others get to where they want be.. like you, Remi & Corey

While yes it's true people have other skills that put them in great hunting situations it's the minority that have that opportunity to do so. Personally I think the best hunters are those who aren't necessarily killing the biggest but those who are most consistent and able to fill a tag with not so great hunting opportunities. At the end of the day though I'm a 19 year old with only 4 years of big game hunting experience so who am I to say. But I think self sufficiency is king of all hobbies.

I know guys who are great hunters that have killed lots of animals. Most of these animals are not the biggest scoring. I also know guys who have walls full of high scoring animals that wouldn’t kill anything if a guide didn’t hold their hand. They are all very successful businessmen or the sons of very successful business men and can afford fully guided hunts on the best properties. I also know a few great hunters who are great businessmen too. They all seem happy with what they are doing.

I think the problem with "influencers" in general is twofold: - they seem obsessed with likes, shares, and subscriptions, (because that's revenue) and some of them have been busted doing unethical shit in order to keep that content going. - they bring unwanted attention to hunting, and peoples home states. Right now, western hunting has exploded in popularity ever since 2019 really, but 2020 kicked it into overdrive. This attention only makes a bad situation worse. I'm proud to say, I will never be an influencer. For one, I'm not that good. For two, I have a big mouth. Lets just say a few months back I made an honest review video about a pack system I use because nobody made one before as far as I could tell. Maker of said pack system found my review and commented. I don't think they liked some of what I said. One month later, they put out a video series on the very same subject when they hadn't before. Whhheeeiiirrdddd.
