+James Matthews cheers dude. I'm really enjoying the flexibility of the crane! Interesting in the second version coming out soon, should we expect to see a review from you soon???
Nice bTS Leighton, i love how you utilized the inverted mode in the kitchen. I like how you light as well, thats something so many newbies like me forget. just because the a7s is a low light beast doesn't mean you don't need lights. Peace from Toronto!
Thanks Dale, it's good to know what people are getting from it, unsure of who my audience is at the minute so trying to cover as much as I can. And yes, a camera will only get you so far and from experience I know that kitchen lighting is usually horrible so I wanted to create something stylish that stood out, I'll link the full piece once it's out there.
Well, I switched from audio engineer to shooting and editing video just about two years ago, and I find so many similarities between them (audio and video) and to me, lighting is like mic placement in front of an amp...it's not sexy, but it'll make or break your final product. Thanks for all you do brother, keep it up!
Hi Leighton, very informative stuff as usual. Just a quick question about the Zhiyun Crane. I ordered one (V2) a couple of months ago to use with the Sony a7sii and a Canon 24-70. I have used a steadicam in the past and also used other gimbals, but for the life of me I could not get the Zhiyun to balance. I am talking 3 days of trying.....for hours! In the end I sent it back. How easy was it for you the first time round? I was thinking of getting the Zhiyun M and just using the Sony RX100 on there (then I heard that it won't balance perfecly on their and I would need extras to make it work perfectly). But I thought for run and gun I could leave my sony RX100 on there and use the sony for other shots. And then they announce the brande new Zhiyun Crane. Life is too complicated sometimes :). That question wasn't quick was it? Sorry. In fact was it even a question?
Oh dear that's unfortunate! I'd just check weight limits and be very careful to stay within these limits, I find that lightweight zooms or small primes work best - I have recently been struggling with Samyang 20mm MFT prime and the GH5 . I think the RX100 and Crane M would be a good fit and the AF is really good so might just be perfect for what you want to do.
Hi Leighton, thanks for the reply. I did eventually go for the Crane M. Here is my first test with the Sony RX100iii, and I think it is a great combination. They definitely compliment eachother: vimeo.com/236709288 Password: dance
Hi Leighton, I have a Sony a7s with a metabones IV adapter and the Canon 24-70 2.8 ii, how in the world were you able to balance the a7s ii + metabones + the canon 24-70mm!? This setup just seems too heavy to get the perfect balance. There's a small range where stays still when tilting it slightly up or down, any further and it will swing all the way back or forward. I also can't push the mounting plate any further back or the camera will hit the rear roll motor, but I had found the balance point for this nonetheless. Are you able to explain or make a tutorial on how to balance the crane with this setup? All the best, Jose.
+fromjose my adaptor is quite a cheap plasticky one so that might have helped. I'm also not sure of the weight difference between the lenses as I was using 24-105mm. I had to use it in the tile follow mode as the weight was a bit forward heavy and giving a bit of wobble
