I think the fact that he used actual livecam footage and phone calls and convinced us that they were linked made the story very believable. Makes me realise how easy it is to manipulate people
If you listened to what he said at the end you would understand the video. Its not about whether it could happen or not. Its about the way people would react when they saw the story on the news. 10 years ago people wouldnt have believed it. Today we wouldnt be too surprised.
@@andybradley8347 I'm starting to be a bit worried about that. I wonder who might have the motivation to question my comprehension of Tom Scott's apparel though.
a connected world is scary but well worth it,its like space exploration,we dont know whats out there but were gonna have a look, its all about being human,.
TED stands for technology entertainment design. Think of this as a hypothetical, a thought experiment, or speculation. Nothing there is too implausible, and anyway TED has had Rick Warren (a pastor) speak about his book. That's about a distant from technology as you get.
Doesn't have to be Stephen Fry, it could be any celebrity with enough reach in the country in which this scenario was playing out, and some of them would.
Fortunately hasn't happened yet because the overlap between those people who are on 4chan/regularly use the internet and those who would physically walk to a location is unsurprisingly narrow.
The News would only give that story a few words, and they would be so vague we wouldn't understand anything about it. If we follow the link to the news item, there would be a popup on the news website and it wouldn't let us read the page without a subscription. We give up without finding out any more details.
I don't watch tedtalks because of 2 1. Ted never appears 2. They aren't or don't seem that interesting But I like Tom Scott, one of my favorite Tom-s (Number 1 is Tom Haverford, number 2 is Tom Scott). So I'll watch this
This... this is both the most depressing and horrifying Ted Talk *and* Tom Scott related video I've ever seen. Humanity can be truly awful at times. Might need to hop over to Kurzgesagt or The B1M to feel better after this.
For a complete-lack-of-fun exercise look over the comments and se how many people asked whether this was a real incident, even though Scott stated rather explicitly that he strung together several real events into a fictional one AND the video title says that it is a dystopia.
@@FemboyVegeta and i'm sure he's worn other non-red shirts on camera? my comment was about the difference between this scott and now!scott and less about the absoloute time of each
If you listen what he actually is saying, you would have noticed that all those events happened. All those reactions are real. They just didn't happen in that order and not about one person. So the only thing he made up was the order of events, not the events itself or the reactions of the people.
Oh please. Did you know that in Los Angeles someone was murdered? Someone also got in a car accident. A dog was stolen. A child didn't get dessert and there was a fire in a high school. That doesn't mean that it's a story.
i am so confused, was there ever a person named jacqueline may? did she ever sing never gonna give you up? did she get killed? I realize this whole story isn't real, but he said that all of it happened separately or something? So are these all real things or is it made up all the way.
This was a real story, according to him. It isn't fake. He is piecing together the info, cos the media never broadcasted this issue. And why would they? Cos of the way that the laws are structured on our news ??? He did this talk, "offline", if you cared to noticed.... and we are watching this via a "ted talk"... which is an American site. Not a UK site. It was a "food for ponder"... cos it is about a UK's situation... , a crime... but without evidences, a systemic crime... that the UK government couldn't control.... Broadcasted by an American conference setup. Framework. A talk. They sponsored this.
Oh. Sorry. I should have said "don't do stupid shit in front of a web camera whilst connected to the internet and someone is watching over it", like in chatroulette
who would have guessed that Rick Astley and his "Never Gonna Give You Up" were relevant (to be precise, a big meme phenomenon) at the end of that decade?
If you could spare 5 minutes from your incredibly busy life, you could have finished the video where he answers both questions you have. She was killed as well as 22 others.
I don't think so. The 9gag meme rock was found by 4chan in only a few hours based off only 1 video and a few people. It's pretty much the same story, except no one got hurt (yet, at least)
I don't understand why you must be condescending. He says "...has already happened. Just NOT to the same person, at the same time, in the same place." It was a story to show what could happen, not something that did happen.
