Is there any one thing that would prevent someone to become their own payee?

Edgar, people absolutely can manage their own benefits without a payee. Payees are used if someone needs support to manage their benefits.

Not sure about all payee's since only had 1 but, my experiences with one were bad, at first by myself i was only having some issues with managing money like, might not calculate right for a week of groceries once in a while, since i didn't buy back up food & tried to just barely scrape by but, paid all bills on time, only once was a day late because, didn't know where the place was. Then when i got a payee, she started forgetting to pay my phone bill, electricity, not sure if she even paid the library bill probably going to have to check myself, gym bill, late on groceries bill, so i went a whole week with no food, then she blamed that all on me, and is trying to say i always had a problem with bills, so now not only is it worse but, my reputation is being ruined as well, i had to pay my gym bill with my own grocery money it got that bad, then most of the time my money just sits & rots not being used for any thing at all, i understand saving but, what she does isn't even considered saving it's literally just hoarding money.

Garret, I'm so sorry about the experience you had with a payee not doing their job. I'd definitely suggest switching payees. Ask for recommendations from Arcs or other groups where you live. If you have a case manager in your life, ask for their help, too!

@@lucybeadnell8948 Thanks, unfortunately my case manager is against me & defends the payee every time she messes up. So i decided i would probably be safer just managing my own money & just play it safe, and buy back up food on groceries instead of cutting it close every week.

Her not paying bills is a No-No if u read the guidelines for a designated payee. You can request an explanation of the benefits.

So if my 18 year old son who is on SSI and i am his Rep Payee than I will not have to complete a annual report? I turn 62 in July and will be taking my SSA and will be applying for my son to get DAC will that need a annual report and also keeping receipts?

Daniel, if he lives with you, you should not have to complete an annual report. When you take your SS benefits, SS should automatically move your son from SSI to SSDI. As long as you're Rep Payee, you should be keeping receipts/records of spending, but as long as he lives with you, you don't have to turn in an annual report on that work.

Hello, im having a hard time understand the responsibilities of a payee still. All i know is the payee ( my mother ) is in charge of the money and has to be spend it in my best interest which is rent food cable all the bills in the house hold. I did recieve the maximum amount but was unaware i was even recieving it untill i was 18. anyways, can this money be spent towards an aparemtn? If not, how much should i be paying in bills while living with my parents? I feel it's in my best interest to leave a unhethy environment. I have no privacy and i get treated like a child. constant emotional abuse... hope to hear from you. thanks :D

You can get with your Dr explaining your situation with parents handling your $s. Tell your Dr that they are not handling your income right & you feel it's not benefiting u. You'd like a form filled out from Dr stating you can handle your benefits. They may send a report for parents explaining they are handling the $s. They can't spend the $s the way that they want to do.

Also, u can get with Adult Protective Services & they can be of help in directing u in the right direction. Tell your Dr about the emotional abuse & f say you can't handle your $s they have agencies that can set you up. You must call social security, and tell them you want to get another payee. You got that power in your hands...It's just that if you are unable, and u feel your parents are not handling things social security can set u up with an agency that will pay your bills for you. Ask social security to have an agency that will manage your benefits.

Yes, it can be spent toward an apartment after u request with social a new dedicated payee. If the doctor doesn't give u the ok. The key thing gets with your doctor that handles your disability. It could be your Psychiatrist or primary Dr. Both have the authority to request u handle benefits on your own.
