What does that have to do with social security? Social Security is screwed because Americans love stuff they didn't pay for and don't like math. @@MJIZZEL The federal government is a financial mess because of Social Security and healthcare programs. It has nothing to do with mating of frogs and Brazil or gender studies in Pakistan or foreign aid or military spending. Her checking account has over $75k in it. That doesn't count her 4 properties worth over $2.5 million, $5 million in investments, government paid healthcare, or her half a dozen "play money" accounts. Why is the government taking $1600 every month from people in my financially struggling generation to give to people like her? Why am I responsible for paying for rich elderly people, to whom shopping for things they don't need is a way to pass the time? @@JC-tq8gm Student loan companies are basically loan sharks. They dangle free money for your college degree and told us once we got a job we would begin paying back our loans at reasonable rates. When I got my loans they never explained how each loan you got would become due at the same time at different payment schedules. I only had $15,000 but 12 different loans. When totalled they came to over $700 a month which starting out in a job was more than I could afford. They suggested consolidation which locked my consolidated loan at a 9% rate instead of having the fluctuating interest rate which over the course of my loan was at times 2%. I paid my loans off long ago but the predator way these loan companies got students to sign was egregious. During Obama's admin they made the companies come clean and had to go over the term of the loans, how you would be required to pay them back and so on so anyone who got a loan from 2010 onward was told the reality of their loans and the costs each month. I personally think loans payback and tuition costs should be linked to your degree. A teacher degree should cost far less than a doctor or petroleum engineer who will make far more over the course of their working life so they should pay more in tuition thus more in student loan repayment. Garbage degrees like political science, women's studies, etc should not be allowed to be presented as a usable degree. This is just so wrong on so many levels. 1. Social security will not “fail” in a decade. The fund goes through different cycles of having more and less money saved up due to fluctuations in the population. With the boomers that reserve will likely be depleted in a decade but social security has always mostly been a pay-as-you-go system meaning that when the surplus runs out, 83% of expected benefits can still be paid out via payroll tax revenue. The remaining 17% will need to be made up for either by raising the retirement age by a few years or increasing payroll tax a few percentage. Honestly by the time people like us are retiring the system could be in another different state that’s hard to really even predict. 2. Investing your money as an alternative to SSI is a nice idea and something many financial planners recommend. That being said, doing it as a substitute is. Avery bad idea. The market will experience dips and crashes every decade or so for a few years. This level of instability is not very good for an individual’s retirement. What do you do if the market crashes and all of a sudden you have hundreds of thousands or millions of homeless elderly people because their retirement income was halved? The answer is that this has already happened, it was called the Great Depression, and we made the pay as you go system of SSI to fix it. 3. There are other misconceptions here but I’ve gone on long enough. But don’t be swindled by this boomer Republican asshole. These corrupt guys have wanted to privatize virtually everything in our life for their and their donors’ personal benefit and social security is no different. www.aarp.org/retirement/social-security/info-2020/10-myths-explained.html

Closer to retirement age I will reallocate more conservatively. But the other thing people don’t talk about is my retirement accounts can be willed to family members and to charities. That means I can leave a legacy behind in a way that matters to me and make positive impact in my community. I prefer investing. If I get anything from SS we hope we won’t need it and just donate it to those in need instead. It’s so inefficient and sweat off the back of younger generations. Just a Ponzi scheme.

Here's a novel idea: 5% ss tax on ALL income instead of having only those making under $168k pay
@JC-tq8gm
@JC-tq8gm 3 месяца назад
I'm not sure you really understand the tax. All earners pay it, so if you make $500K a year, you pay SS tax on the FIRST $168K you earned, and everything after that isn't taxed by SS. That's why all people that work/earn money and pay into SS are eligible to draw SS when they retire, no matter how much money they have because they paid into it. In short, the rich do pay into it but they can also draw out of it at the max rate because they put in the max amount.

@@JC-tq8gm as a tax preparer I understand tax just fine. What I don't understand is the idea that because you make more than $168,000 you won't need that social security so you shouldn't have to pay into it which is exactly why people making over $168,000 do not have to pay into social security because they won't need it, meanwhile the people in this country who need it the most are screwed.

@@laoisem316 Obviously you *don't* understand, and even more Obviously you're lying about your profession. You specifically said only those making under that amount are paying. This is a fundamental misunderstanding of how SSI is handled. The only exemptions I can find (or ChatGBT that I also asked) are for religious purposes. Not because you make enough not to need it. That said, you *can* opt out of receiving it, (the benefits) at least for a time.

False, there is a cap on the maximum wage amount that can be taxed. This year it is $168,600. Once an employee reaches that for the year social security is no longer being deducted. Republicans want to get rid of Social security because rich corporations must match employees’ social security tax amount. Abolishing social security is another tax cut for the rich. Raising the maximum wage subject to the tax will fund Social Security. Republicans just want to give their rich corporate donors another tax cut.

I mean, that’s not the only reason, but cutting taxes is always a good thing.

@@robertmartin6800 actually it is not. Cutting social security would be another form of corporate welfare, taking the tax away from rich corporations and putting back onto US tax payers to pay. Some corporations already pay their employees low wages. The working poor, which results in employees of mega retailers having to collect food stamps. This puts the responsibility onto US tax payers to pay welfare for the workers who stock the shelves or sell you your groceries. I don’t know why people are out here defending the billionaires.

@@aprilstull5874 We already pay for social security, we make half the contributions ourselves, cuts to its funding would benefit us just as much as our employers. Corporate welfare? Public subsidy to private corporations here in the US amounts to several tens of billions of dollars annually, most of which goes to farmers and car manufacturers, but we spend a trillion and a half dollars a year on our Social Security Administration _alone._ I'm not saying cooperate welfare is a good thing, they shouldn't be getting any either, but _their_ welfare, and the food stamps we're giving to all the welfare queens working at Walmart, are not what's currently bankrupting us. They _are_ hurting us, and we _should_ get rid of them too, but currently the single _largest_ public expense is our social security administration, followed very shortly thereafter by our public healthcare programs, are the real problems that we have to contend with. We could cut all corporate welfare and not notice we'd done it, it's such a small portion of overall spending. Being a twenty-something white man, I'm not seeing a _dime_ of that social security money anyway, it'll have collapsed a long time before I'll be allowed to retire, so why should I care if it's cut a little early? Oh no, all the boomers are gonna have to skip one their cruises this year? Might even have to sell off one of their spare homes? Horror of horrors.
