Sociology for UPSC : POVERTY & DEPRIVATION - Chapter 5 - Paper 1 - Lecture 4 

My village is 100 kms. from Delhi. I'm preparing for CSE. At the edge of my village there's a caste based community called "Kanjars". They're living in absolute poverty while others like Jats are living very comfortable and easy life. Sarpanch uses them Just for political gains. I went inside their community, some of them are labourers who work in upper caste people's fields and some of them do roadshows with their animals. They have no way out from these conditions partially because of mentality and partially because they don't have any opportunities, good quality of education and guidance to be precise. My father told me that we used to live in such conditions some 50 years ago. I was shocked. Numb. I had not idea what poverty is. I felt ashamed that there are people sleeping hungry in the night and here I am..... I decided to do something for them. Anything which is in my reach. Now,I try to teach their kids in the best way possible in their regional language despite I was born and grew up in Delhi. After listening to this lecture and what u said in the ending, I can say one thing sir. I don't know whether I will become a CS or not but I'm pretty sure what I wish to do with my life.

Sir, you mentioned that in our dearest nation, 21 percent of population lives in *absolute* poverty... However, when I searched the same, the data which I got was nearly about 5 percent... I got a bit confused between the two... Can you please confirm specifically for extreme/absolute poverty since absolute and relative poverty are different to a great extent, as you mentioned! Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!!!
