Cleaning a cylinder head with soda blasting. Soda is a very mild abrasive, which is oil water soluble. The deposit on the exhaust valves requires a more aggressive blasting abrasive. Therefore, the valves need to be removed.

Hi, what kind of soda do you use? I am restoring an old Fordson engine, and it needs a lot of cleaning thanks for your answer.

Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). It is chemically the same as baking soda but baking soda will be too fine for blasting. (The grain size must be like fine sand).

Could you use soda on intake valves instead of walnut shells?

22 Nov 2022, seems like HD gave up or he's dead 3yrs ago. Not allot of information here. PSI??? Type of Gun??? how large a compressor??? job site setup??? job preparation??? What is shown is flash in the pan not the main meal. Really nice job done but I'm a little disappointed in the upload. I dont think he'll read this.

What's the point? The machine shop cleans it when they service the head, and you should never install a head that hasn't been serviced by a shop (ie checked for straightness, pressure tested, etc ...) Edit: Also this will be "microscopically" pitting the surface which would mean that the newer style MLS head gaskets (which need a precisely machined and polished gasket surface) won't seal properly and will fail prematurely. I would never do this to the valves or mating surfaces.

Not true at all. Sodium doesn’t pit.

This isn't sand or walnut but baking soda. That's what a lot of machine shops perform as a service. (And no it won't pit) Theres a lot of heads that don't need all that work you described either, it all depends on what manufacturer wants.
