Soda blasting gun I use: amzn.to/2BlI6kw
In the video you can see all the parts of my setup, ther specs and watch them in action. Watch in 1080p.
I was attracted to soda blasting because of its many benefits.
Unfortunately you always get what you pay for and an air blower gun and a piece of hose will only get you so far. In order to get the real benefits of soda blasting you need something more serious.
After a lot of trial and error I found out that this setup is the best combination of investment and result.

@driving 4 answers How do you get stuff from amazon? I mean we live in the same country (checked up your channel) but whenever I looked at amazon if the tool was 30$, shipping was 30-60$. That's why I'm skipping it and looking for tools on eBay or local online platforms. Cheers

I give this a thumbs up, it's informative and simple. Just be cautious and careful aerating a mold, can be dangerous for lungs. Of course don't clean brake parts like this, use mask etc. Wear gloves with hazardous stuff guys.... just a friendly reminder from someone who has had cancer.

Use anti- caking agent ( silicone dioxide ) @ 0.6% and mix it up well with the Soda and you will never have to shake it like that again. Very good project :)

Try adding an in-line water separator or a DIY aftercooler for your compressor. I know from experience that it's essential to have dry air for sandblasting to keep the media from clumping. You'll notice a big difference. Good video.

It sounds counterintuitive, but I use salt in my harbor freight soda gun. It's cheep, and works better than soda. Of course I typically pressure wash or use a high strength detergent afterwards. I have an aluminum manifold that was cleaned quicker and better than with soda. Just a suggestion.

Funny at 3:30 and after to see you struggling to make the device works: shaking, turning knobs etc... It's gravity fed! Can't work vertically or worse upside down. Just make sure the objects you want to blast are more or less in horizontal line of sight of your gun (may be quite difficult for a cylinder block...). Also blasting soda have anti crumpling additives and is coarser, yet less prone to clog the feeder.
@d4a

+ant Sor I already explained this in the comments below. I use regular store bought soda. I don't have access to blasting soda. I am turning knobs and shaking the gun to get the soda to move because from time to time it gets stuck. It doesn't happen all too often and its a small price to pay considering the price I pay for the store bought soda compared to blasting soda (blasting soda is significantly more expensive even without the shipping I would have to pay, since I can't get it where I live) and I still get the job done just fine. Of course this not might be suitable for professional grade blasting but that wasn't the goal here anyway.

im wondering... could it be too much moisture causing the gun to get clogged up? like using a disposible inline water filter pod might solve the problem? Its a theory and im trying to be analogous with paint spraying... but this so far has solved my issue

you need to be using a blast cabinet to reclaim your media and keep it sorta clean. I got 120 lbs of glass beads I have been using for at least 17 years and since I tank everything that goes into the cabinet and de-grease it prior the only contaminates in my beads is carbon and rust and beads look like new. Although I run my cabinet at 120 psi . your just throwing money away doing that on the ground like that.

I've had good luck doing low-powered soda blasting on aluminum and painted steel using a less powerful air compressor. I'm not sure what exact model it is, because someone painted mine, including its labels, before I bought it used, but it seems to be identical to a Rolair FC2002, and very similar to a Jenny A2G246-HC4V. These have a 2 hp MK246 single-cylinder air compressor motor, four gallon tank (two tanks of two gallons each), and they do about 4.12 CFM (cubic feet per minute) at 95 psig, which it's able to maintain while the motor is running continuously during the blasting. For the blasting gun, I have a Central Pneumatic blasting kit that I bought from Harbor Freight, item 37025, that comes with a plastic bin in which you put the blasting media, and while it's a siphon-fed setup, it works for me, but I can see that a gravity-fed gun might be better. I kept finding that the siphon tube keeps pulling so much of the blasting soda out of the bin, that it's not long before it creates empty space around the end of the siphon hose that's picking up the media, so I have to shake the bin every now and then to collapse the pile of media back around the end of the siphon hose. I later realized that if I attached the plastic bin to the top of the compressor motor setup, that the vibrating motor might keep the bin shaking enough so that the media would keep flowing towards and into the siphon end of the hose. I haven't tested that theory yet, because I have my compressor motor torn apart to clean and paint it, and that process isn't done yet. Using baking soda, I was able to blast off some average paint from an old valve cover, and some light carbon from a cylinder head, but it wasn't able to remove some of the more embedded bits of carbon. For that, I'll be trying ground walnut shells next, which are the next Mohs hardness scale value above soda. I first used Arm & Hammer baking soda, because I wanted to see if it would work, and it worked well within limits, as I describe. Next I tried baking soda for washing clothes, which is a little harder, and it worked a little better, but even when I wore protective goggles, a couple bits of it got into my eyes, and itched like hell, which didn't happen with the baking soda. I found that baking soda couldn't blast away congealed oil, because it would just become embedded in the oil, so you need to thoroughly clean off all oil first. I really recommend doing your blasting outdoors if possible, or in a blast cabinet, because as you can see in this video, it gets all over very quickly.

You need to hold gun more level so gravity will feed powder , when your pointing nose down gravity feed it up above powder supply instead of under supply . You need to position your target 🎯 at the correct angle’s of Fire

It would work better if you used actual blasting soda. Store bought soda is to fine which is why the nozzle gets clogged so often. I discovered that the hard way and when I made the switch to actual blasting soda the gun worked flawlessly.

the soda in a gravity gun needs to fall "down" to the air feed, i.e with gravity, once you hold the gun on its side, horizontal the media cant fall, hence you shake it, change the air etc, nothing works unless the gun is upright, not great for this application

I have about the same compressor specs and have been debating this exact same gun. Shame you can't replace the nozzle with something a bit smaller (3/32 instead of 3/16). Still, nice results, may pick one up this weekend.

Just insert a brass or stainless pipe into the nozzle to neck it down, or plug it completely and re-drill. The soda is not going to kill even a brass nozzle.

+driving 4 answers (mr2 mk1 hero) You also need a very good moisture trap after the compressor. A lot of water is produced by the compressor and it wrecks havoc on dry soda, clogging up the apertures and causing clumping.

Go to harbor freight and get a sand blast cabinet and 50lbs of blasting soda, it's a much better setup. I have one and it works great
@d4a
@d4a 8 лет назад
+sniper152 Not everyone lives in the US where the is harbor freight. The blasting cabinet is an additional cost and I could have never cleaned a transmission housing inside a cabinet. The point of soda is that its environmentally friendly and can be washed away with water with zero harm to the environment, so getting a cabinet might be a bit redundant for soda blasting. It of course is easier to work and less of a hassle with a cabinet, but my aim here was to make a setup that is easy on the wallet but yields great and fast results, unlike the air blower gun and hose setup which is only good for blasting tiny stuff for short periods of time and wastes a ton of soda.
@bcbit01

Just FYI for everyone watching this video. Soda blasting WILL remove rust but requires higher pressures and CFM rates than your setup can provide.

Looks nice! Be great for cleaning up oxidized aluminum engine components like cam or rocker covers, timing chain covers etc. if removed. I always hate how chalky raw aluminum gets. Not a big fan of the techno(?) music but don't mind me, I'm an old fart...
@d4a
@d4a 7 лет назад
Sodablasting is not great at removing oxidisation on aluminium. It can do it but you will need A LOT of psi. I found a guy near me that does it, and he has one of those huge boxy construction work air compressors. Techno is made by most royalty free music producers so I used it, its not bad, even if you're old :) You should hear some of the dubstep stuff they make. I'm young-ish and I honestly don't get it.

I wonder if rust could be removed by first giving the part the electrolysis treatment (see this elsewhere on RU-vid), which reduces the rust to a black form of iron oxide that can be scrubbed off. I haven't tried this, but it seems possible... Also, it seems that most RU-vidrs demonstrating this soda blasting technique are doing so without the benefit of a blasting cabinet. We're all trying to get results with minimum expense, aren't we?
@d4a
@d4a 6 лет назад
+ptreth36696 Electrlysis would probably help, or maybe even work on it's own enough to make the soda blasting redundant? This is a diy video and a blasting cabinet would be a bit beyond what an average diy person has or wants to purchase, even if it is extremely useful. Soda isn't a health hazard, unlike sand, and you can easily wash it away, unlike sand, which also makes the cabinet less of a necessity.

@JohnMSawyer
@JohnMSawyer 8 лет назад
I've found that even simple baking soda blasting as is done in this video, does fog some aluminum, though so far I've tried it only on a cylinder head--maybe this effect doesn't happen with harder aluminum. But it won't remove any aluminum since baking soda, and regular blasting soda, are softer than aluminum.

Ok, first off let me apologize for possibly sounding like an ass. I tend to do that and I don't know why. Second, I'm sure you were able to blast the head to your satisfaction. Lastly, I was merely pointing out that if you were to orient the head so that the deck was perpendicular to the floor (ie standing up) and point the gun at it with the reservoir up, you would hardly ever have to shake the gun unless it was about empty. Other than that the head looked darn good.
@d4a
@d4a 8 лет назад
+Dave S (Davenia419) What a nice and refreshing tone. Thank you. Now let me try and explain my side with a little bit more detail. Although this video is pretty badly made I honestly did a lot of experimenting with the soda before I made it. In my case the problem lies with the soda itself. This is store bought sodium bicarbonate, for baking and other kitchen related use. It somehow traps moisture in it no matter what you do to it, and no matter how I held the gun it needed shaking relatively often. Where I live actual blasting soda is unavailable and if I were to import it it would cost a small fortune. Plus, baking soda cost me like 50 cents for 1 kg, from what I can gather online blasting soda costs 40 USD for around 20 kg, so for the price of shaking I would have probably gone for the kitchen stuff even if I could get the blasting stuff. But, I am certain actual blasting soda doesn't need shaking and what you say about holding the gun stands 100% true in that case. In any case, thank you for your comment and feedback, I appreciate it.

Store bought worked great for me. No soda can really remove rust unless you're blasting with some sort of industrial behemoth compressor. I did try several store bought and some were too fine, true, but the low quality budget brand ones are often a lot more coarse, at least here in the Balkans, so that's what I kept using. Sometimes they are a bit moist if they weren't stored properly by the supermarket, but they dry out within a day or two, just leave them in the open air :)

@jaredshaffer3901
@jaredshaffer3901 8 лет назад
So, to remove rust, you want to coat everything with salt? That quite possibly sounds like the worst idea ever. They sell blasting media of different grits that you can use, no need to reinvent the wheel.
@flitsies
@flitsies 8 лет назад
Jared Shaffer Well we are talking about media that does not specifically rust, you wouldn't really use this type of blasting for steel or iron but clearly for aluminum or plastics or other types of delicate matter. So salt may well be a good idea as it will atomise at a much lower rate but might just be right not to damage the product.
@jaredshaffer3901
@jaredshaffer3901 8 лет назад
You specifically mentioned rust...aluminum and plastics don't rust. Iron and steel do. Besides, even if you used it on aluminum I wouldn't want to coat everything in my garage/shop with salt. Like I said, there are already blasting medias out there for pretty much any scenario which aren't going to cause problems.
@flitsies
@flitsies 8 лет назад
Jared Shaffer But wouldn't you use some kind of box or container to restrict the dispersing of the media when being blasted. But you do make a fair point, however those blasting medias often are expensive whereas salt is cheap, and if you wash it off should cause no problems. It's only an idea.

Brand isn't really important as long as its gravity fed and well made. If you're in the US the speedblaster is popular there I think, and works great from what I hear.

There's some soda that's on the surface after blasting. Does it come off with air or does it need a wash?
@chesshooligan1282
@chesshooligan1282 7 лет назад
You can soda blast it.
@chriskazaglis
@chriskazaglis 7 лет назад
The reason I asked is because although baking soda isn't very harmful it still is powder and a mild abrasive. so you want to get this off before you reassemble a cylinder head. so how do you get the hidden in tight oil galleys or caked on baking soda off?
@d4a
@d4a 7 лет назад
+chriskazaglis If you're patient it all comes off with air, but I suggest a really good wash. You also need to polish the journals where you the cam will go after this, but just a bit is needed.

could the gun be used with sand for other blasting purpose??
@d4a
@d4a 8 лет назад
+bizeemi vas Sure, this is actually a sandblasting gun that I found working great with soda too, but I used with coal slag and sand and it works great of course.

sdq sdq It's not too bad with small and medium sized parts. Bigger things I would blast outside. Soda is not harmful to the environment and rain will just wash it away.

Will this remove corrosion from carburettor body?
@d4a
@d4a 5 лет назад
Hmm, depends on the casting metal, if it's soft it can make a noticeable improvement. It's great against light superficial rust if the compressor is powerful enough, but it will never be able to remove hard, deep rust like sandblasting can. But of course sand blasting carbs and throttle bodies is a no-no. If you need to get rid of tough rust I would completely disassemble the carb and leave the body soaking in some heavy duty chemical rust remover for several days and repeat the process.
@Bandit400VC
@Bandit400VC 5 лет назад
@@d4a thatnks for info! I actually have disassemble my TMR carbs and i have try every cleaning solution, from spray, bath, ultrasonic etc! It worked alittle but not that much...although the carb body seems to be really strong !

@@d4a i did try but overnight, i also boil it with vinegar and others but nope... The only solution that work alittle is a "secret recipie" cleaner i got from a store which is really strong and im afraid it will vanish the carbs!

you can see this worked for what he needed. its right there in the video. there is no reason for you to be a jerk. this is fine for a backyard mechanic. hes not running a soda blasting shop. if you want to sound like you know what your talking about, you should start with your grammer. half of your comment is mis spelled. bottom line - your a true arrogant jerk

Ohhhhh there should me more people like u in the world i hope one day u come to my defence only you and your veiwpoint are correct and anyone elses whether be good, bad, contradictive or other are incorrect or unvalued.You my dear freind are over opinionated, ignorant in your comments of something that wasnt even directed at u, and nosey. I think there is a jerk here somewhere but im betting if you are reading these comments and look at this openmindedly u will figure out just who that person may be ,but then again since i value all opinions maybe it is? Peace out!

you are over opinionated - your opinion on this video shows it clearly. instead of being humble and giving a respectful opinion.. you instead bash, critique, and simply label yourself as a "bully" behind the keyboard with your arrogance. i would not even entertain the idea of coming to your DEFENSE*. my view point is a respectable opinion. your view point is an arrogant statement. you're implying that this method is a "joke". everyone is entitled to an opinion. do me a favor and quote where i stated anything that is relative to being "good, bad, contradictive, and/or ignorant".. i know your comment was not directed towards me, and for that i apologize. although after reading your comment i got angry. its not me being nosey.. the comments are public, nothing nosey about a pubic video and a public comment i read... if i were to be nosey i would find other comments you left and reply on them... Look at this open mindedly? talk about contradicting.... you just contradicted yourself. why dont you look at this video open mindedly and provide us with constructive criticism instead of your low blow comment. jerk.

Not a bad video, however it's such a pity that your microphone was broken. Such a pain in the ass to type all those captions! And so dreadful for viewer that we have to read them too. I wonder if, 4 years later, you've saved enough money from DIY to afford a few bucks to buy a new microphone? EDIT TO ADD: I watched more, and noticed the microphone DOES work. So, to solve everything all you need to do is FUCKING SPEAK !!!!
