"We are inspired by Tool but I consider them not only a band but a genre. Besides that, I really don’t think there’s anything to argue about, we make good music whoever it would remind you of. Some people tend to dislike rather than like and are looking for faults instead of seeing music for what it is, good or bad." -Martin Lopez
I met Martin Lopez when he was still with Opeth, queit but cool, nice dude. Missed him and was worried he'd never come back to music so you can imagine how stoked I was when I found Soen with Martin Lopez killing it on the drums again. One of the best drummers of all-time IMHO and Soen wearing some similarity on their sleeves, they still have their own voice, writing some amazing songs, that's what counts.
@@JustTheTip556 In case you can't hear the obvious influences and need the actual words of one of the founding members of the band to confirm: "We are inspired by Tool but I consider them not only a band but a genre. Besides that, I really don’t think there’s anything to argue about, we make good music whoever it would remind you of. Some people tend to dislike rather than like and are looking for faults instead of seeing music for what it is, good or bad." -Martin Lopez There's nothing wrong with that. All music carries the weight of its influences. This is quite obviously distinct from Tool, but also quite obviously influenced by them. It's great music.
Matt Hoover I didn't say it wasn't great. I'm a huge tool fan and have been for years. My point is that Soen sounds enough their own. A lot of musicians get influence from different music. It doesn't mean they sound like them. Soen doesn't sound like tool to me. And maybe that's cause I've been hella into tool for many years?
For every One who's Mad telling this bad sounds too much like tool, cm'on guys, this should be positive, it's a nice way to have a new tool's album before 2035
Riccardo Zanasi haha there's a local band from where I'm from, they cover tool and all their original work sound like tool. i have similar thoughts about them.
Being a big Tool and Opeth fan this album Blew me away. It is really good to See Martin Lopez Drumming again....and Steve D on bass Are you kidding!? Can't wait for a new album from these guys
This is the song that made me fall in love with this band years ago. The exceptional drumming, the beautiful clear vocal, the wisdom of the lyrics...wow!
I'm the biggest fan of Maynard and all of his projects. Tool A perfect Circle and Puscifer are all in my top ten. Does Soen have similarities to Tool? Hell yes and isn't that fucking awesome?! They are different enough to stand out, but similar enough to allow me to fall in love with this band. People stop bitching; especially if you're a fan of Tool, just kick back and enjoy this incredible music.
Lula Wolf If you like Maynard's projects, there's a similar band from back in the MP3.com days called "Four" from Texas. Not easy to find their stuff, but insanely good quality. Heavier vocals, though. Their logo is unique. It's a 4 and an F overlaid on eachother to create a square.
As a long-time Tool/APC fan, I appreciate that the guys in Soen are able to draw on the style and create some pretty amazing tunes. I would rather listen to this than 99.99% of the crap we are fed in the mainstream. With that said, Soen fans will just have to get to used to the comparisons if the band is going to leverage the same vocal phrasing, time signatures, imagery, drum/tabla styles, guitar tones and Maynard-look-alike front man. Respect. It may not be unique, but it doesn't suck.
Line up: Steve Digiorgio from Death, who played with Masvidal and Reihnert on "Human", Lopez on the drums. I've been listening to this album for the past few weeks and I've been finding more and more nuances. This album is so tight, I really don't see how you can't appreciate that? I love Tool! That doesn't mean that they're the sole proprietor of epic riffs and amazing music :)
>Came here to read some educated interpretation of the lyrics >14 year old tool fans crying because another band falls under the prog metal genre which is solely reserved for their tool only. I like tool, but it's hard to imagine how some of the most brilliant lyrical pieces produced the most childish followers.
Amazing stuff guys. Seen you last night in Birmingham (27/9/22) you speak to me in ways no one else has, reduced me to tears throughout the night... Thank you for your music, it has touched my soul.
I was also there in Birmingham, watched the show from the front row and I can't explain how I felt, I was in shock the whole time. These guys are out of this world. Also, Savia was extremely, unspeakably good and it's not even my favourite song from them. Met Joel after the show and of course he turned out to be the kindest guy on earth. I love this band so much that it scares me!!!
Hi Hatice, thanks for commenting. I completely get how you felt as it was very hard to find the words to describe all the emotions evoked. We were at the front too, just by Cody, I had a friend come over from Ireland for it! We bumped into the guys coming out of the pub just down from the venue.. Wished them well and thanked them for everything..never got to meet them after the gig though but delighted you did 😁
HAHA really guys. i thought the exact same thing. Since i got tired of waiting for the new tool album(which is never gonna happen) i started listening to Soen and im like "TOOL's New Album" haha :D
I love this band..but I cannot help but think that if TOOL and OPETH had a baby it would be SOEN, just saying p.s: His vocals here sound more like Mikeal from Opeth than Maynard.
Well put. We live in a world of critics blinded by jealousies, and shallow complexes. Yet, you will find rare individuals whom can appreciate things for their intrinsic value; whom are not mentally blind. This my friends, is art of the highest degree. Any such individual can appreciate what Soen offers : The ultimate point being that this enjoyment does not degrade the experience one might share with Tool or any other inspiring bands.
Tool-ish.....but awesome !!!...with his own essence and melody range that has its own feelings....completely different than Tool .... this are 2 different creatures ..with similar growls ..
Everyone says that this sounds like Tool and musically it does but vocally it sounds more like A Perfect Circle. Either way I like it. Good music is good.
Dude the first verse is note for note a direct rip from so many Tool songs. Even starting with "I am not". Ever hear "Sober"? Of course he sounds like Maynard.
Really solid. Keep in mind they drew inspiration from Tool but they'll evolve on their own in the future. The similarities are pretty obvious, but it's awesome actually - there aren't too many bands even trying to imitate Tool, let alone sound similar, but still original. Keep up the good work! Not that I've expected anything less from a band featuring Lopez and DiGiorgio...
Do people not even fucking listen to their own music? They only thing that sounds like Tool in this is the vocals. For the rest of it, it is very diffferent.
Ya know, I actually took the time to listen to more of this album and I can hear the similarities now. His voice is definitely more "theatrical", if you will, than Maynard's. Not too big on that, but the similarities are there....
I love tool they my fav. in my opinion bout fuckin time there influence manifests. I've heard a couple other bands that have similar sound. why wouldn't you want to make music that sounds anyway close to the awesomeness that is TOOL. this is better than 95% of bullshit out there.
ok tool is a great band i get it... ok lets say that those guys are a copy of them... ok lets say it is whatever... but listenening to this... the music and the lyrics... man i love this song. i hate people who say booo this is a copy of this or that baaah rage rage rage... a copy or not doesnt matter even if a copy but good is still good
Am I the only one who is slightly disturbed by the lead singer looking a little bit like Maynard Keenan? (DW not making another dumbass comment about how this is like Tool, idgaf good music is good music)
The baldness of this guy just gets that reaction. In a way I think that helped them to get exposure but it's also kinda detrimental for the not-that-fair comparison.
