Let me see if I've got this straight : She was ranked 54 in the world, she is only 19 years old, did not lose a set in the French which is the toughest tournament in the world, only lost 4 games in a set twice, defeated the top seed and #2 ranked player in the world Simona Halep 61 62 and wins the final 64 61. Are you kidding me ? This is one of the greatest achievements in the history of tennis. Congratulations to the French Grand Slam Champion Iga Swiatek and congratulations to Poland - you have your champion !

Polak, Węgier - dwa bratanki, i do szabli, i do szklanki, oba zuchy, oba żwawi, niech im Pan Bóg błogosławi. The full, two-couplet Hungarian version reads Lengyel, magyar - két jó barát, Együtt harcol s issza borát, Vitéz s bátor mindkettője, Áldás szálljon mindkettőre. The Polish text may be translated Pole and Hungarian brothers be, good for fight and good for party. Both are valiant, both are lively, Upon them may God's blessings be. or, more literally, Pole and Hungarian - two brothers, good for saber and for glass. Both courageous, both lively, May God bless them. A shorter Hungarian couplet Lengyel, magyar - két jó barát, együtt harcol s issza borát. may be translated Pole and Hungarian - two good friends, fighting and drinking at the end. or, more literally, Pole, Hungarian - two good friends, together they battle and drink their wine. wow, Swiatek came almost from obscurity to win the event, and win it decisively with steady play mixed in with winners. Based on this match you can conclude that her 1-sided thrashing of Simona Halep was not a fluke. Swiatek now appears to be a big star in the making.
@Summon256
@Summon256 3 года назад
They used to say the same about Ostapenko too! Look how it worked out now! Time will tell...Women’s tour needs its own superstar since ages now (the only player that was able to win grand slams consistently year after year throughput almost entire last decade is Serena Williams...and considering her age this is especially embarrassing!) One of the main reasons nobody takes women’s tennis seriously these days is because it is essentially leaderless! Especially now, since Serena is evidently playing worse and worse with each new slam and there is nobody to pass up the torch...so maybe Osaka and Swiatek will finally takes over (Swiatek to bigger extent imho...because unlike Osaka she has the benefit of the doubt and there wasn’t yet chance to expose her weaknesses! The real challenges remain ahead, when she will have to consistently prove this slam victory wasn’t just two-week joyride to paradise and she will prove it over and over again by keep winning consistently!) Tbh outside of her recent USO campaign Osaka wasn’t that impressive ever since she parted her ways we with coach, that brought her first two GS trophies back-to-back...so i dunno if she can live up to the hype! So all eyes are on Swiatek now! It is her turn to prove something, let’s hope she can handle the pressure better than all her unsuccessful predecessors!

Summon256 Wim Fissette, Naomi's current coach is actually a much better coach than Bajin. Wim helped 4 players win Grand Slams and 2 players reached GS finals. Bajin only succeed with Naomi and no one else. To be fair Bajin indeed helped Naomi win those titles but Naomi always has that massive talent and ambition and it is doubtful any other coach could not helped her win GS had Bajin did not coach her

Nobody talked about her in 2020. Was a heavy underdog and on NOBODYs radar. A year earlier she got absolutely smoked and blown off the court by Halep. In 2020 she won the title, destroying Halep along the way, and losing no more than 5 games per match. 2022 she entered FO on a 28 match win streak and all the pressure was on her. She was as overwhelming of a favourite as Novak is at AO, Nadal at FO, and Federer at Wimbledon in his prime years. She took the title losing only 1 set the whole tournament (and that match where she lost a set she took complete control afterwards, 6-0 6-2). Two completely different experiences, takes the title both times. Plays well with and without pressure. Now world number 1 with a huge lead in points over the No. 2. Very well earned.

Don't speak too soon. She has to cope with much more attention now, both on and off the court. There have been quite a few recent players who have won one or more Grand Slams impressively and didn't go on to dominate ( Clijsters, Henin, Ivanovic, Sharapova, Muguruza, Kerber, Azarenka, Kvitova, Wozniacki, Li Na, Stosur, Mauresmo ). An impressive effort by Iga but will she still be winning Grand Slams ten years from now ? Only Graff, Williams and Sharapova have managed to do that in the last 30 years ( there have been 38 different winners in that period, 22 of those with multiple wins , so 3 out of 38, only an 8% chance to dominate ). Time tells, not just one outstanding performance.
