A pitching coach recently did a RU-vid video on “The Bucket Drill” being a drill that “hurts” your mechanics, and I completely disagree.
Any drill not done properly and with a true understanding of the purpose of the drill CAN hurt your mechanics.
However, the Bucket Drill was one of THE foundational drills I did growing up. Looking back, I attribute the Bucket Drill as one of the Top 3 drills I did as a youth pitcher that helped me get my mechanics to the point that they were when I was playing.
Now remember, I’m 5’5 and eventually threw 70mph in college. Looking back at my velocities, I threw 62 as a freshman, 64 as a sophomore, 66 as a junior, 68 as a senior, then I got to college and threw anywhere between 69-71mph.
My main point in this video is not to say that undoubtedly this drill would get anyone who does it to throw 70mph.
My main point is to re-articulate the purpose of the drill so that you take full advantage of the drill as it does not just work on one mechanic; it works on several things at once.
AND I wanted to remind you that different things work for different pitchers!
