The harmonies and irregular phrases of this song are just dreamy.... This is from when pop music actually ennobled the human spirit.

I played this song on New Year's Day 1971. My Mum burst into tears. I knew she was missing my Dad who died in 1968. It is a beautiful song. Thank you so much for posting.

The original version of this song - and the best ! I bought the record from England because it was impossible to find in any record store in Norway. It became a popular tune to slow down the end of a Saturday party.

Just watching the film Liquorice Pizza and the Congregation's version of this great song is on the soundtrack. Hence it brought me to this version. A great song who ever sings it.

Softly whispering I love you echoes of your voice are calling still through my dreams softening the chill of the breeze through my window I can see the moonglow painting silver shadows on a rose coloured land a world that we walked hand in hand in a day of gold coloured by the glow of new love I can feel your warm face ever close to my lips and the scent of you invades the cool evening air I can close my eyes and you're there in my arms still and I know your soft kiss turning into music ev'ry beat of my heart when I hold you close to my heart and I hear your voice whispering I love you. Do do do do do do do do do do do do do I can feel your warm face ever close to my lips and the scent of you invades the cool evening air I can close my eyes and you're there in my arms still and I know your soft kiss turning into music ev'ry beat of my heart when I hold you close to my heart and I hear your voice whispering I love you.

Wow! What a great version and I love to hear the song writers bring it to life the way they envisioned it!! The harmonies are fabulous. I like the English Congregation's, as they were billed in the States, version with the opening sopranos, but the male lead singer sounded as if he were putting in an effort the singing equivalent of wrestling a polar bear, it needed the lighter touch that these two embody. The Congregation version also needed to allow the choir to be louder when the lead vocalist was singing with them. What was the point of having a choir sing along if their beauty was drowned out by the lead singer? Blame the producer more than the talent for that. I kind of like the Mike Curb Congregation version as well with the lower female voices making the words more understandable and having the choir mixed better with the lead singer than the Congregation's version. I know I am sounding critical, but I enjoy all the versions, it is such a beautiful melody and I marvel at the words, so poetic and romantic. I only wish they could have woven in some of the opening ten lines for a second time before the reprise of the chorus. Oh, to be able to write like that!!!

I bought the 45 when it was released and i still have it. There is something about a lifetime of scratches that make listening to the 45 more poignant these days. However it is nice to listen to a scratch free version on RU-vid and David and Jonathon are the only ones who can sing this song.

By far the best version, as far as I'm concerned. Beautiful melding of voices, and that fabulous orchestration.. what's not to like? As regards the other versions, Yulia's is my next favourite... the Congregation's is ruined by the over-the-top vocal, and I've never liked Paul Young anyway. Just my opinion, of course...

I haven't heard this version before, and in my opinion it has a softer, more melodic feel to it that the version recorded a few years later by The Congregation. A wonderful find! and in my opinion has the edge over the two versions. What an amazing songwriting team they were.

@@alfiesgirluk I've always thought Paul Young's version had a more modern feel to it, whereas this version has a more lush, orchestral and melodic sound which adds an extra layer and adds something to the song somehow. Whoever sings it, it's wonderful to listen to!

Like Cory Haffley, I had forgotten this song until I came across the Congregation's version from 1972, which I vividly remembered. Then I went to the David and Jonathan original from 1967, which I vaguely remembered, but I don't think it got much airplay. I like both versions, two unique takes on a memorable record.

760 Days to Freedom: A Memoir of a Love Story What if love letters exchanged between a young Danish woman and an Englishman in the late 1980s that had lain dormant within a trunk for over three decades were suddenly to be revived? How might they choose to respond to the reality of a world that has changed? Preserving the senders’ distinctive body scents and style of their time, they bring a voice to resonate with brokenhearted souls, young and mature, who had a love that’s now departed, but could they be forever forgotten? ...I am now on the 15:33 train to Hundested. The eighty-minute journey allows my thoughts to be put to my laptop once more, with my headphones on, listening to one particular song on RU-vid by Jonathan & David. I have never shared it with you. And how could I have done it in 1987, unlike our access now? But I listen on some of my brightest days and darkest nights. The words written below will resonate with me until I die. It could have been our marriage dance. When it was first released, I was seven years old, a year before you were born!

Brian Keith actually recorded three versions: The (English) Congregation (as they were known in the US because of the Mike Curb Congregation, who ALSO recorded this), MFP (whose version was out around the same time as The English Congregation) and The New Congregation (which was done many years later as made obvious by the style of that version, that version for some reason is NOT on RU-vid).
