I bought this knife recently (the non-XR variant) and I absolutely love it. The action/bearing on it only feels a little rough because of the tension put on it from the lock. If you spend some time getting used to the nuances of the locking mechanism on the knife you can easily flip it open without any resistance from the lock and truly enjoy how smooth the bearing can actually be. All in all, I think it's a fantastic piece!

The SOG Kiku is the most Bad Ass Little 3" Bladed Folder on the Market for heavy-duty chores and tasks. It's not a thin and slim and light-weight folder with a delicate blade that's only good for slicing. This is one for the Hiker/Camper/Outdoorsman or Soldier that needs a small and very capable folder that can handle just about anything. This is one awesome little knife, in my opinion; I absolutely luv all of my Kiku's. :-) Oh, try a little oil on the pivot and XR-Lock. Every XR-Lock Folder that I have tried out needed to be lubed... :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

Likewise. I’ve got the original kiku, the assisted, and this one the carbon fiber. Love them all and while I love bought a bunch of knives these are my usual edc knives. For most things needed on the job they work amazing. (Power line lineman 17 years)

This is a knife that I shouldn’t want. There are so many things that make me know I’ll be annoyed by the knife-the grind for what I use knives for, is terrible. The thickness of the blade too. The short length of the blade for the shape it has, the lack of sharpening choil in a recurve… And yet, every single time I see this knife, my lizard brain says “awesome! You need that!” Which actually also annoys me. I don’t like tactical looks without justifiable function, and this knife makes me feel like I secretly want to be a mall ninja. The fact that some secret part of me loves this is what scares me… but I really want this knife.

So I got to handle the kiku xr and the kiku xr LTE side by side last night. A buddy picked up the steel liner version as a Christmas gift to himself (for a significant discount as it was a display case model that must have been dropped as it has cosmetic scratches) and received the LTE version a few days ago from a family member. This model stikes me as much more appropriate, for lack of a better term, for having the two different material tiers than the terminus. I grabbed an s35vn/steel liner terminus during a knifecenter sale and find the weight & balance to be great. The LTE terminus is cool, but the weight savings just doesn't seem to manifest as much when in hand. The kiku is a much different story as the steel liner model has a bit more heft than I prefer whereas the LTE version feels excellent. This is all probably irrelevant to a large chunk of your viewers, but those that are big about ratios and care about shedding every last gram possible may find it pretty compelling.

Kiku XR LTE ceramic bearings with 420C+ washers are the best upgrade you can get for this knife. They ship the kits everywhere now.
@mattadler4710
@mattadler4710 2 года назад
from what I understand, cryo treatment is more about the machining process than the end result performance of a steel. I could be mistaken (and if I am, please do correct me) but that's what I've gathered at some point. Yeah, I do not think they really had EDC in mind when designing this. The overall length suggests a friendliness for daily pocket carry, but the chunkiness of the whole thing and the very steep grind and blade shape screams tactical. You aint gonna break it, but its not gonna cut your apple for lunch. Cool looking knife, but I have no use for it. I do like the idea of CF liners though.

I took the pocket clip off mine and threw it out the window. It slides nicely in my edc sheath and feels great in my hands when that pocket clip is laying in my front lawn. That gritty action goes away with a dab of oil. 225 is too much IMO but 180 for the standard is good after it is in the pocket for a while.

Yes, $225 is a lot. But, you can find these in the older SS lined version for far less on eBay... I purchased my SS versions on eBay for less than $150. But, my Carbon Fiber one was almost $200. And, I, personally, like the SS Lined Version the best. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

How about a good budget version direware? SOG still appears to be disliked in the community by a large margin. I hope they can overcome it eventually. The standard version is a good knife, good scales, steel liner, drop shut, good detent, quick release with flipper tab, good steel, good lock and was sharp out of the box. Credit where credit is due I think when done right. Now the Stout FLK I've reached out to sog and to their credit sent a replacement, but there appears to be a design flaw. On the back of the blade where the liner lock engages appears both knives I received have same portion of the blade ground off so the liner lock would engage like the blade was too big. Bad batch? All Stout flk's? Who knows but that was a regretted purchase.

I never liked the looks of this one, just ordered the Terminus XR LTE in CPM S35VN, not the best steel but should hold up well against corrosion and dulling with occasional use. The 3" blade is right at the legal size limit in most locations and shouldn’t be too intimating with the deep carry clip. Been enjoying your reviews, keep up the good work!

More & more knives are coming out with wide flat sections on their blades. Dr. Larrin & others pointed out that thin geometry behind the bevel cuts much better. Not only do these flat sections force greater thickness behind the bevel but they are a bit ugly. I suppose it can be argued that it makes the blade stronger which, admittedly, is a big part of the Kiku’s design goal. But compensate that thickness with a strong hollow grind.
@googleuser-ly2ek
@googleuser-ly2ek Год назад
The blade looks sick and cuts like dream. People talk a lot but compare this grind to the grind on BM North Fork and you may see the SOG is better..

SOG's XR action feels like that because the bar lock is actually rolling against the tang of the blade. Makes it easier to actuate with one side tho.

Hey MC! I got just about the same knife! Mine has satin blade with OD green scales. With a Cryo CTS-XHP blade an yes! For such a little knife mine is heavy! An as Nick Shabazz says.. it’s a pocket pecker! Lol I’m thinking about selling it thou, just a little too small for my big hands. Soo lately I’ve been carrying my SpyderCo PM2 in S35VN steel I love it!!

I’m not completely sold on their whole cryogenic treatment or whatever. I don’t know if it’s just a marketing ploy or what? I cant really tell a difference from reg XHP. Maybe a little tougher? I emailed SOG directly and they couldn’t give me a whole lot of info because it’s proprietary. The sales associate or customer service rep used a neat metaphor to describe it though lol seemed like she was trying to convince me..

One of my favorites. Initially was in to it for the aesthetics, but it cuts hella clean. I have the linen green micarta version. Absolutely love this knife. Don't mind the price or the somewhat gritty action as most of my work knives end up getting that way anyway periodically. The looks are what sold me on it initially but the overall usability and the "just right" feel of the ergonomics are what keep it in my pocket. No regrets here.
@stake6957
@stake6957 2 года назад
The small recurve blade design and the handles are what sold me. It just stands out and looks different. Love or hate SOG most people can’t help but look at the design. If someone is not a fan of the blacked out one, 9 out of 10 they love the satin steel with tan micarta.

Just bought this knife, returning as fast as my car will go. Action is rough as can be . Knife blade would bounce and not close locked half the time when closing. Handles were different color shades, one side looked like it was laying in a pool of dark oil. Overall workman ship was poor in my opinion. Knife was so dull wouldn't even pass my paper cutting test. Was probably so dull my 5 year old grandson could play with it. I paid over $200 wouldn't buy again if it dropped to $39. Iam a big SOG fan, used to live within a mile of the factory in Edmonds WA. Bought a lot of knives from them over the years. Won't anymore until made in USA or Japan again.
