Awesome review and I just learned something new about the tactical tool tin! That's going into my Assault pack for our next FTX. That's Hooah.

Not going to lie, the balisong type flip open and close at the beginning is what sold me on it 😂
@MeZillch
@MeZillch Месяц назад
Like I mention at 0:29 you'll likely need two Torx 8 bit drivers to loosen it up for that flip open effect. For home use it works great but for pocket carry I later decided I liked it a bit stiffer so it wouldn't open up on its own in my pocket.

the formfactor of the powerpint is nice, wish Victorinox would make a mini Swisstool, the big one is the best ever made imho. Small trick for using bits on a Victorinox: get a 1/4" hex bit adapter (i use the gedore nr. 620) it fits on the bottle opener, instant bit adapter, works on the big swisstool too:)

Thanks. I was tempted to buy the satin one too. I may still do so if this one gets permanently tucked away in a "open only in an emergency situation kit" I squirrel away in my bag. I still need one for everyday EDC tasks after all!

I opted for the gerber center drive but I wish I had bought a sog for the way the bits work. That and the size would make perfect for an edc backpack kit. Good stuff man
@jammer2isme
@jammer2isme 2 года назад
like the multi-tool, but one thing about keeping things quiet, cottonballs can be a nifty item to have but to keep things quiet? use ranger bands stuffed into the nooks and crannies or around things to keep them together or separate from other items in a metal box- they're excellent multi-taskers up to and including tinder for fires and you can get a bag full of various sized on amazon for around $10
@rescueraver
@rescueraver 3 года назад
So for $10 you buy a piece of plastic plus 16 bits, for $20 you can get the Leatherman bit set with 40 flat drive and a double-sided micro driver. I EDC LM bit set and ratchet with the DeWalt double sided socket (4) sockets on my Surge I work in a large federal office complex with nine buildings. The Leatherman bits have held up for what I use them for anything more I go back and get my impact and the appropriate bits. I just find a lot of people don't really get the Leatherman bit set and there is a definite dislike towards them, however carry 40 bits on your belt with a multi-tool that has a pistol grip capability for more torque. Yes I carry about $200 on my belt. Great videos really fun watching you pack stuff into little spaces. Keep up the good work

@MeZillch
@MeZillch 3 года назад
Excellent point. If you are buying folding pliers (as opposed to non-folding) it proves you value compactness. The next question is then what's the absolutely smallest you could make them yet still maintain a full 4-finger grip and indeed the Powerpint is THAT size!

SOG Powerpoint multitools have a feature that requires a lot of care. This is a watch screwdriver. In some cases, when carried in a pocket, you can get an unexpected "pleasure". The blade has a dubious geometric shape . In general, the multitool is very convenient. A very useful video. Thanks. I keep my subscription to Your channel. With respect.

I also have a SOG Powerpint…my one and only SOG product. Ever. Its a great concept so poorly executed (junk IMO) that Ill never buy another SOG product. I modified my SOG to do away with some of it’s glaring quality deficiencies, but I still dont use it. Good video as usual, you are always seeing the positive in all you do with/to these tools and making them better.
@MeZillch
@MeZillch 2 года назад
As I state in the beginning of the video I prefer Leatherman overall, however for this application of needing a folding set of pliers to fit in an Altoids tin, using standard 1/4 inch bits, and maintaining a full hand grip instead of just being a keychain trinket, Leatherman offers no equivalent.
@Gogogordy1
@Gogogordy1 2 года назад
@@MeZillch agreed. Its a shame (to me anyway) they did such a poor job manufacturing these as the geared pliers and form factor etc (concept) are sooo good. I have several LM as well and while not perfect they ARE made with much greater care than these are.

💡idea for you: Use a Dremel to buzz off a short piece of a larger ferro rod and add it to one on the bit slots on the rubber bit sleeve. Insert the ferro rod in the pliers to hold it and use the razor blade as a striker = 🔥

I'm quite impressed with the SOG PowerPint (the pliers look like a great platform to mod) ...... a couple of things you might consider upgrading. Not sure you are aware but the bit holder can actually hold jigsaw blades quite effectively (not nessesary, but I would increase the functionality by making a small dodad to help hold them in firmly), this means you can add a good wood and metal saw blades to the kit and I would also consider a small hex drive HSS drill bit or 2......if you could fit them. I find the gut hook makes a great ziptie cutter (just got to hone that edge) A section of motorcycle inner tube (as an extra large ranger band) work well to hold the tape sleave on the tin securely. I rekon you could get a little more in that altoids tin......I would also try and squeeze a frensel lens, small rectangle of wet and dry sand paper, couple of needles, neodynium magnets and/or ferrocerium rod.

I would ad a piece of single strand insulated installation electrical wire. That way you'll have a piece of wire to make emergency short circuits as well as a twist tie. And I believe the wire cutter in the SOG tool is strong enough for 2.5 mm² single strand copper wire.
@MeZillch
@MeZillch 3 года назад
Good ideas. A stiff wire wrapped around the bottom edge perimeter can be used both to conduct electricity and straightened to become a poker, hooked end retriever, etc. Like a giant paper clip a McGyver "super-tool"! (I also tend to keep in these kits say to pick locks.) Thanks for your post.

The base layer I wrap the duct tape around is either the backing paper of either a shipping label or from a roll of stickers, or I take two lengths of clear shipping tape (the kind you often dispense out of a tape gun) which I make a loop of by placing them sticky side to sticky side. I guess quality control is an issue, mine had the needle nose pliers that did not meet in the middle, but met about 2mm down, with the tips flaring out. To avoid sending it back and having to wait for it, I use a Dremel to cut off the top 2mm portion of the needle nose and now they come to a perfect point (although 2mm shorter). The rest of the tools are fine, and the scissors are strong enough to cut through zip ties without fuss

The Swiss Champ is a great tool but its mini "pliers" are thumb-powered whereas true pliers are hand-grip-powered, so it has limited grip strength and the jaws don't open up very far. Lots of other useful, well-designed tools though and a handy companion I keep on my desk.

Question: did you purposely loosen the SOG so it can "flip" open with one hand or does it come that way?
@MeZillch

As I mention with an on screen graphic at 0:28 you need two Torx 8 screwdrivers on each side to loosen it or tighten it. I'm not dead sure but if I recall correctly I did loosen it ever so slightly from how it came.

So regular 1/4 inch hex bits fit in the CENTER of the tool, so you can use it like a real tool? That’s BRILLIANT! It makes me wonder why all multi-tools (at least, all the ones that claim you can use bits with them) don’t have that feature.

Just an ideia, but for the safety belt test, you should try to cut it tensioning by both ends, it does improve the cutting, although I don't hope for a result so much better that it would be actually functional. By the way, How is the fit and finish of it? I have a powerassist, made in Taiwan, and everywhere I look about the SOGs made in China they say they are way inferior in quality
@MeZillch
@MeZillch 3 года назад
I agree tensioning the belt on both ends is better but I was running low on that safety belt material I bought exclusively for conducting these tests, so I was being stingy. When I buy more then I will resume the better method. The build quality is adequate for its size and weight class but not quite of typical Leatherman caliber. I think the trade-off of saving weight/bulk vs. being sturdy/thick is OK though since for my application this is just a backup device I hope to never actually need to use.

@angelobartolomeu5679 3 года назад

@@angelobartolomeu5679 I have some SOG knives but the Powerpint is my first multi-tool from them. It says it is made in China and designed in the US. I personally don't worry too much about country of manufacture especially in modern times where most mass production is done by robots, not people! 🙂
