I mean, I'm relatively sure the FBI probably knows that the scales come off a Victorinox knife. But this is actually seriously useful for "forget it until you need it" storage of documents. If you always have your Victorinox Companion with you (and you should anywhere you're legally permitted to), you'll have those files in a fairly robust form factor. What I'd use it for? ONE (of several) copies of my critical personal information. Medical records, insurance documents, photo evidence to go along with the insurance showing products, receipts, etc. Copies of digital photos I'd selected as "don't want to lose these ever", crypto key revocations generated in advance, that sort of thing. Emphasis on several copies. If my home burns to the ground or is destroyed by flood, earthquake, volcanic eruption, alien invasion, whatever … if I wasn't home, I'd have those documents and photos. Sure, at least one of the copies I'd absolutely have in an encrypted file stored "in the cloud", and of course I have those files at home. But that's three copies in potentially three locations using three different mediums. Can something destroy all three copies at once? YES! But that's far less likely to happen. And why not just keep it in my little microSD wallet card, since I absolutely have one of those? Because I recycle those microSD cards and their contents all the time. They're disposable and disposed of regularly, and sometimes when you're protecting your emergency resources secreted upon your person, you're protecting them from your own poor choices in the moment. I can pry the scales off my SAK with the scale removal tool (read: "toothpick"), but I don't. Just like a piece of Rite-in-the-Rain paper with phone numbers on it is a good thing to keep inside your phone case. You take your phone out of its case how often?
Just a small suggestion. When measuring with the app, keep the phone flat and follow the ruler. The phone was way crooked and didn’t evenly follow the ruler. Just measured my tape measure AND ruler exactly at 12 inches. Definitely not worthless sir 👎
A way to store Vaseline is to make a mini grease gun by using a syringe. Take a needle less syringe of any size from 1 ml on up and melt the Vaseline so it's very liquid. Pull up the liquid and let it cool. I usually use at least a 3 ml syringe.
Boy, lots of commenters freaked out that this kit contains a vial of white powder and now you want to add a syringe?! Ha ha, just kidding. I guess that would be a good way to carry Vaseline. Thanks. (I mostly travel by car so TSA inspection is not on my mind much.)
@MeZillch It obviously would be too large for the tin. This is just a general tip to keep it handy in a tool kit. I know back in the 70s, kids claimed to mainline peanut butter, but it would be rather tricky to do that or Vaseline.
Like I mention at 0:29 you'll likely need two Torx 8 bit drivers to loosen it up for that flip open effect. For home use it works great but for pocket carry I later decided I liked it a bit stiffer so it wouldn't open up on its own in my pocket.
I just picked up a 4" crescent wrench today, and started carrying it. I'm really happy I decided to keep things simple. They're lightweight, slim, and I have a feeling they'll come in handy.
I totally agree that sharp blades dull quickly when used to scrape ferro rods but under the pressure of either getting a fire started so you don't freeze to death. . . or film a RU-vid video without looking foolish because you get no spark, I find the sharp side is easiest. Ha ha.
@@MeZillch Completely understand! I’m always silently cheering people on when they are trying to demonstrate and thoroughly impressed when they get it on the first or second try. Would probably take me 30 minutes. TFS ☮️
It is much easier to keep always some paper clips in your wallet or purse. And do not forget to add some safety pins!! These are good to keep also inside your jackets (you can add paperclips to them). Thus the cork screw can marry another item.
Thanks for your post. Admittedly little flexible mirrors are low quality but also not so hot are knife blades, even if they seem "mirror finish". What's important is not just the shiny sparkly aspect of a signaling mirror but also its DEAD flatness. Here's a test but please do it carefully because it involves holding the blade up close to your eye SO BE CAREFUL. Shine up the blade so it is nice and clean, as "mirror-like" as possible, and then hold it up close to your eye to use it as a rear-view mirror to look at objects 20 feet away or more. Notice how unlike a real mirror the images are very blurry? This proves the reflection of the sun off that surface will be diffuse and dim after about 20 feet as well, and will therefore be dim when attempting to flash a rescuer far away.
Might be a tight fit but I haven't tried. Thanks though! I do show how to store a simple "tension tool" / shim for lock picking in a SAK scale here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fSEK2iuZjfg.htmlfeature=shared&t=488
Good point, but any smuggler that would use a clear straw instead of an opaque one for this has got to be pretty dumb. My trips are typically by car so my bags don't get searched.
True, that kind of works, but my method is not just "open it with one hand"; it is "open it with one hand directly into the in-use, scissor action grip (hand-powered open/close grip position)", in order to immediately put it into action without needing to let go of the work held in your other hand. All the methods I tried previously (to swing it open like a knife as you've mentioned) also tended to bash the back of my fingers/knuckles when it swung around and strikes the back of my hand. If it works for you though without this backlash, kudos.
@m.zillch3841 I'm going to practice later. I do card tricks and slight of hand so I think I have an advantage, hopefully. Glad you're still making videos. Still have my gnarly Altoids, custom survival kit! Made it 5yrs ago.
Lots of good ideas! I carry a two-foot length of cloth sewing measuring tape folded up in a small pocket tool kit. Inches on one side, centimeters on the other. Also, in a pinch, US paper money is just over 6" long.
I wouldn't necessarily call this a "mod", since there's no permanent change to the SAK. Just an added tool that neatly fits on. Same as adding the pin to my Victorinox Ranger. It came with the hole, but no pin, for some inexplicable reason 🤔
This was a great add-on tip!! But for those who already carry a mini screwdriver or FireAnt firestarter in their corkscrew, the best place to hide a paperclip is under the big Phillips screwdriver in any Victorinox SAK that has one. It doesn't interfere at all and is instantly accessible, with no having to fiddle with threading it onto the corkscrew.
Little straw, little mirror, razor blade. You've been partying with smurfs aint ya. Haha Just playing. Good video. My keychain fire kit is a keychain capsule full of homemade firestarters. I can fit 12 fires worth of material in it and i have a 3 inch piece of fatwood and a keychain ferro rod with striker. Ive always got a knife on me and thats what ive got on me if i can get to my car i have a large pill bottle fire kit
