Very good, great animation. A couple of things, a number of SOHC engines were 4 valve per cylinder, examples being the Honda J series, Chrysler EGJ and offspring, Nissan KA24E and several more. A number of DOHC engines do use rockers, so there are exceptions to the rules, but as a general explanation this video is great.

Came here to make the same comment, also a number of SOHC Engines featured VVT like some honda engines and Mitsubishi's 4g69 Mivec engine. But yeah great explanation and animations.

Exactly! My imported 1990 Accord 2.0si exclusive coupe came with a F20A DOHC and it had rockers and 4 valves then i swapped over my ported and cammed superior flowing 4 valve SOHC F22A head just because stupid people think 2 cams gives them twice the power of a SOHC haha!

test drove a 2014 chevy 2500 (sohc), 2007 tundra 4.7 v8 (dohc), ram 2500 (ohv, single ohc), 2009 frontier v6 (dohc). Now i live where there is atleast 4 miles of steep uphill its a huge test to show what your vehicle is made of. You can see and feel the difference of a dohc made vehicle, managed to keep a steady 75 mph from leveled road all throughout the end of the top uphill with one engine shift at 2-3.5 rpms (for the dohc trucks). The single cam ohvs blow these trucks out of the water in terms of power but my mph went from 75 mph (leveled road) scaled down to barely 60, 2 quarters near half way the uphill at the same 2-3 rpms. Real world performance to suit your needs. Listen, well made is better than the numbers in the stat sheet. Get a dohc vehicle especially if you travel to work in mountainous areas, long uphills. From what I've seen new or old the v4 cars end up blowing their transmissions its just a nasty uphill go v6 if u cant afford a v8. Obviously get the 2500 trucks if your towing or dumping heavy material.

@@JohnKickboxing Basically like they said; SOHC are usually fitted with less valves per cylinder due space constraints. It's not really due to having 2 cams instead of one, it's more of a side effect thing. Another example: a DOHC car almost always have the spark plug right in the center of the cylinder for better an more uniform combustion and that simply isn't possible on SOHC unless they offset the camshaft and use longer rocker arms on one side. @Burcey B That once again has mainly to do with with valve count and lift which effects performance. Usually on low rpm you actually want a slight vaccum to occur because you won't be using all the air that is coming into the cylinder anyways. You will be compressing air that in turn will not be used up in the combustion event (3rd stroke) with the fuel therefore you are losing power (torque). This is all compromise game. You give away something to gain something. Of course that VVT and other systems reduce this compromise and pretty much give you the best of both worlds but at an increased cost and complexity.

"Since the mass of the valve train is lesser in such a configuration" should not be followed with "SOHC engines tend to produce more torque toward low to mid RPM and provide improved fuel efficiency" Total non sequitur. SOHC has higher valve train mass than DOHC (on a per valve basis, and that is what matters). SOHC has far less than pushrod engines. If you are going to compare to pushrods, SOHC are capable much higher maximum RPMs and tend to make most of their power at higher RPMs. Dual Overhead "This configuration has a better valve lift resulting in improved airflow through the combustion chamber" Almost completely false. And again, compared to what? The primary advantage of direct actuation as shown is even further reduction of valve train mass. This allows (again) for higher operating RPM. The primary reason for going to a four valve engine is to REDUCE valve lift. Valve flow at their perimeter, not across their area. Two small valves have more perimeter than 1 larger valve.

Also , there are DOHC engines with 2 valves per cylinder, old Alfa Romeos for example .Better performance in the low to middle RPMs range of two valves engines is because of the larger squish / quench area in the combustion chamber which is impossible to be replicated in four valves chambers . The larger squish area generate strong turbulence even from very low RPMs and this lead to faster completion of air/ fuel mixture burning. DOHC on two valves chambers allows for precisely adjusting and varying of valves overlap which is impossible with SOHC . Poor video on the subject overall!

Cam on bucket design, as shown in your DOHC animation is the other way around valve lift wise. Cam on bucket is limited to the cam lobe lift, where as rocker arm designes (DOHC, SOHC & push rod) have lift mutiplication based on the arm rario, allowing greater vavle lift & more flow.

I honestly curious about my motorcycles engine since it was bought at 2011 and its a 150cc engine with DOHC config and just now i know how DOHC engine works 😂 This video is great! The explanation is easy to understand for people that didn't know shit about engine (like me) . Keep up the good work!

Nicely made, but lot of generalisation. The examples shown include direct-acting follower v plain follower v roller follower, as well as varying numbers of valves...and hydraulic v mechanical lash-adjustment, whereas these features are largely independant of the number of overhead camshafts. Look at the valvetrains of a few car and motorcycles engines from the 60's through to today and there are examples of most combinations. Some of the of the pro's and con's listed are more closely linked to the follower design.

I just noticed that SOHC is actually better for my driving habit. My car normally runs below 5000 RPM where SOHC produces more HP and torque than DOHC. Thanks for sharing the info!

There are always variations on a theme. The Kawasaki Z-1 had DOHC and 2 valves/cyl. The Jaguar V-12 has SOHC and no rocker arms. The Suzuki GSXR series had DOHC with rocker arms.

In a SOHC would the force on the bearings of the rocker arms be lower if you move up the camshaft? It is a bit unfortunate that cams and spings push in the same direction. At least 90° vector add to 0.7

I don't understand how volumetric efficiency increases in dohc, I mean cant we increase the valve lift in sohc too. Sohc can operate 4 valves too. If the goal is too open the valves for more duration it can be done in sohc.How dohc helps them?

Likely in this decade, due to new pollution norms inside the EU. It's hard already to respect Euro 7 with current engine tech, most likely there will be steps in adopting Koenigsegg FreeValve like tech on mainstream cars. This would improve efficiency a lot, and also could lead to a more easier fix using firmware update to enhance vehicle usability in the latter of it's life and so it's likely to use a car for more of it's life at the same standards of pollution. Yes, might not be what the car producers wants, but it is what they need to do.

Hi great visualization. I keep hearing about the cost-efficiency of the SOHC and from your video I can't help but wonder, in DOHC you have the 2 cams to make, in SOHC you have to make the cam, the 2 shafts where the rockers are placed AND all the rockers... Where does the lower cost come from exactly?

With dohc you have 2 cams and 2 camshafts. With sohc you only have 1 camshaft and 1 cam.

@@tommieboi707 but in SOHC you have to produce at least 3 extra rocker arms (for 4v/cyl setup) with bearings inside each of them, plus the rail where you place your rocker arms. this makes the number of parts higher and you have more stuff to assemble. why would the DOHC, which has 1 extra cam but less parts overall and no assembly of rocker arm system required (they can simply run bucket tappets), be more expensive?

There are a ton of economy engines which are SOHC and do not use any rocker arms at all (using a simple shim-over-bucket system), usually having the sparkplug mount at the side of the two (most of those engines are 2v per cilinder) valves. The video says that DOHC always has dual INDEPENDENT camshafts, but that again isn't true. Toyota 4AFE, some Honda engines, and Fiat's FIRE 16v engines are DOHC with non-independent intake camshafts. There are also engines that are DOHC but do use rocker arms instead of shim-over-bucket or shim-under-bucket designs.

It's clear that DOHC 4VALVE has more power on high rpm, the air flow are better because the cam are directly touch the valve, not like SOHC need to use a ROLLER ROCKER ARM SOHC 4VALVE is good for stop & go because it has more torque on lower RPM DOHC 4VALVE are less power & torque on lower RPM But if you on highway definitely DOHC 4VALVE are better But if you driving in the city SOHC 4VALVE is better choice, Especially if the traffic is heavy & forece the engine to STOP & GO also run on lower RPM

An important thing they forgot to add is that DOHC engines have a greater valve timing flexibility than SOHC, in DOHC with adjustable cam gears you can independently change intake and exhaust timing to make more or less valve overlap were as SOHC you would need to change out the cam to have a different valve overlap.

Yeah, and nowadays I say, you don't need any valve overlap. 4 valves allow for enough air anyway. Instead of internal exhaust recirculation to throttle an engine, just start with a downsized one and get power on demand from turbo.

Not all D series engines lacks low end torque, what I realised is that USDM Hondas have less powerful engines than Europe or Asia. Here (in Europe) we have d series engines were the torque figures surpasses the hp figures and those cars have good low end torque. Where are you from?

I'm a huge fan of dual overhead cams pushing four valves per cylinder. Gives the engine designer lots of flexibility in head design, but body guys don't like the "bulky" packaging of the heads for todays "aerodynamic" (they REALLY AREN'T) jelly bean cars. DOHC's can push SIX valves per cylinder easily too for even better engine breathing= more HP =better fuel economy. Honda even made an "oval pistoned" engine with EIGHT valves per cylinder for motorcycle racing that showed promise with carbs and should have ran away with fuel injection (not legal yet). The "old" internal combustion engine has a lot more life in it and development in it than Tesla would have us believe.
