Soichi Konagaya was born in Kamakura-shi, Kanagawa, in 1949. In 1973, he graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, majoring in percussion. He studied under Koyake Yusuke and Ariga Seimon. He began composition during his university days. Upon graduation, he worked with CBS SONY as a studio arranger. His activities with wind bands began when he was serving his term as the permanent conductor of Asia University Band. He also cooperated with the Tokyo Ballet Company for a production composed specifically for them. In 1998, Konagaya was awarded the Academy Award of the Bandmasters Academic Society of Japan (Now the Academic Society of Japan for Winds Percussion and Bands). He presently serves as the Japanese band clinic commission advisor, executive director of Academic Society of Japan for Winds Percussion and Bands, and the executive committee of “KYO-EN, the Wind Orchestra Music of the 21st Century.” Konagaya also enjoys participating as a conductor and a clinician.
