Or can they?
I had some fun testing out different ways of growing lettuce. I set up two wicking beds and two kratky totes. One of the hydroponic setups and one of the soil beds had Super Greensand added to them as a source of organic silica.
Buy Super Greensand on Amazon at www.amazon.com.... Check out their website at www.supergreen... for more info. I was monetarily compensated for including their product in this video.
The wicking beds had an unintended design flaw that gave the plants insufficient water. However, germination and seedling growth was better in the bed with Super Greensand. I think this is likely due to improved moisture retention from the silica.
Watch this video if you are interested in the nutrients I use or the overall process of growing plants this way • How to do Simple Hydro...

@Sister Mary Clements an RO filter will last for about 2 years so it pays for itself and I liked dirty gardening but just in my opinion I think my stuff produces better when I change my water and keep my temps and humidity pH and so on within the plants boundaries but then again it's just my opinion.

This is a very creative and inspiring channel. I hope to attempt growing plants hydroponically someday, preferably through the might of Kratky, so I'm going to keep watching and studying the videos to help get an idea of what to do when I get the materials to start. There are still a few questions I have, like where the water level should be at to start growing and what plants I should start with as a beginner, etc, so maybe you could make/recommend a more tutorial-based video, or something? Thanks!

Definition of Soil: The top layer of the surface of the Earth in which plants grow. Soil is composed primarily of disintegrated rock particles from the Earth's crust. Soil particles are classified by their diameter. Clay particles are less than 0.002 millimeters, silt is 0.002-0.05 millimeters, and sand is 0.05-2.0 millimeters in diameter. It takes 100-500 years to produce an inch of soil from rock of the Earth. A healthy garden soil should be more than 40% silt with good aeration, water retention, and 1-5% organic matter (humus and living organisms). Peat moss is found in bogs and is an ingredient added to potting mixes. It isn't soil.
@matthewkheyfets1309
@matthewkheyfets1309 4 года назад
@The Senate you're correct. You actually need about ZERO. Your soil should be close to zero organic matter or at least under 5 percent. The organics matter should go on top of the soil about .5-2 inches thick. Organic matter around roots just begins to rot and takes oxygen away, causing to all sorts of issues. Some things just take longer to decompose. Bark works until it decays, but it takes a while for that to happen. Best soil is a mix of sand, clay, and silt. But nobody uses sand in pots because it's freaking heavy so they substitute it with slow decomposing stuff.
@dropbear2972

For a fast harvesting veggie like lettuce, spinach hydroponic is the best option. But other than that, soil growing is still win. Have you tried growing pepper, tomato, cucumber, melon, watermelon in hydroponic? They eat hell alot of water/ hydro nutrition and become 10 times expensive than growing in soil. I do both hydro & soil growing.

Aside from the fact that hydroponics do nothing to improve the soil of the Earth, and in several ways are more damaging to the environment. There's a reason it can't be certified organic here in the US. Soil>hydroponics

This video just shows how much you can't grow in soil because you aren't a gardener... Agricultural production of green lattuce and a lot other fresh products in the field takes from 30 to 45 days... how come that you didn't manage to grow anything edible into 2 months from soil? Summer season it's only 3 months and on this earth there are lots of places where it's the only growing season available for feeding on greens... Hydroponic it's good only if want to grow on concrete... put your head into soil and figure it out by learning something...

You were right! Soil growers soiled themselves after this video judging by the comments. As an outsider looking in with no desire to garden, after reading the comments I would do Hydrophonics mostly due to simplicity for the same results. A lot of these people get up in arms about not adding the proper nutrients and fungi to the soil solution. This is precisely why Hydrophonics seems like the clear cut winner. You dont need to add all this extra crap to make it work the same as a non soil plant.

You are getting lots of comments and views which boosts your channel, but sadly you are providing misinformation. It is a fun, dramatized video but not an accurate comparison. The huge difference in growth and relatively total failure of soil grown lettuce show that the earth boxes were obviously not constructed properly. I was actually quite interested in the idea but disappointed. The cross pipes with holes in them for air aren't really necessary and would have also acted as an overflow in the water chamber if the water levels were ever that high. It would also serve to dry out the soil at the bottom of the container thus blocking the wicking properties. Perhaps your wicking cup was not deep enough to be in constant contact with the water. And I would have added 2 or 3 wicking cups for a container that size. You may have been better off just hand watering regularly in a regular pot. Further more young seedlings - even in an earthbox - need to be top watered until their roots have a chance to grow deeper. Plants at that stage are sensitive to moisture levels. A mulch on the soil would have acted in the same manner as the lid on the hydroponics container protecting from evaporation. Also the soil must be fed nutrients in some manner, just as nutrients are added to water in a hydroponic system - especially if so much peat moss is used. (For that matter should not the same nutrients have been added in equal proportion to both mediums?) Did you use potting soil or garden soil? Containers plants don't do well with heavy ground soil. It compacts too much for plant roots to grow. And the only thing peat moss does is improve water retention - if it's mixed properly. This is why peat preserves and mummifies things - because there is no organic life in it to break organic matter down. I'm not cutting down hydroponics but I watched your video hoping for a fair assessment. You can claim that soil growers have and issue over this video but your methodology skewed the results.
@JebGardener
@JebGardener 6 лет назад
that all sounds like good solid info but i wasn't misinformative about anything. I noted in the video that there was a flaw with the wicking beds
@bellaspatiogarden3493
@bellaspatiogarden3493 6 лет назад
Oh - I missed that in your description for this video because I didn't expand it and that's on me - but that being the case your video title is very misleading. I would feel less tricked into watching if you would have provided a text right at the beginning of the actual video. I would have watched it anyway but would not have been left with a bad taste for it. If your title had said *Attempt to compare soil growing to hydroponics* for instance, I would have still watched it because I am actually interested in the subject. I was hoping to at least learn something about hydroponics from this video. Now I feel I've just been click-baited into watching something useless. I tried to be constructive with my comment rather than just critical. But I'm left with this feeling now that the integrity of your videos is not something you care about. That may not be true but as a part of your audience that is how it feels to me. Probably it doesn't matter to you, but I will be going to other channels to learn more about hydroponics. You're welcome for my participation on this video. On the plus side I have to say - you grew some fabulous hydroponic lettuce plants. Best of luck to you.

I think this vid is funny and educational. Definitely proves Hydroponics is superior, especially for a novice grower. I will be converting to Hydroponics simply because it's overall a cleaner operation and gives the grower more control. That being said: As a soil grower, growing Connecticut Pumpkin & Watermelon, I use a 50 gal. drum to "Compost". All non animal kitchen scraps go in. Takes me a little less than a year to fill. I take all that rich black goo, mix it with 4:1 ratio of potting soil & steer manure, add a full bottle of Fish Emulsion, mix throughly. Then I pick a spot in the yard, excavate a 4'x4' hole about 2.5' deep. In goes all my homemade soil and the seeds. From there it's lots of water & sunshine. I always have great results, but I also put a year's worth of work into manufacturing nutrient rich soil. Now, back to: I'm switching to Hydroponics.

If you think planting in peat moss shielded from the sun is the same as hydro grown in the sun you're a fool. Peat moss is a nutrient buffer, which means it absorbs nutrients. If you make your own kombucha (fermented sweet tea), for every batch you create a new scoby. Those are "symbiotic cultures of bacteria and yeast". One use of the extras is to mash them up with something like an immersion blender, and add to garden soil. The beneficial bacteria seem to enable the plants to absorb nutrients more efficiently. I added some to just a pot of zinnias, and they absolutely exploded with blooming. Even my neighbor commented on them. Kombucha is easy to make with about 1 gallon of mostly organic black tea, and about 1 cup of organic cane sugar or another type of organic sweetener. You steep the tea and dissolve the sweetener, then cool to about 84 degrees, and add about 3/4 bottle of GT's original or 1 bottle. Keep at about 84, and in about 5-7 days, you will have kombucha and a new baby scoby. You can make a new batch with the same tea blend, the new scoby and about 1 cup of the new batch. Kombucha is great for you, too.

Hi there, I just want to do a quick reminder for humanity then we all sleep less stupid at night. 1. In the soil only you have 25 % of Bio diverstity on earth, this bio diversity feed propably an other 25 % of it, in a pot or in a box, there is not much alive inside, wich explain why jeb's plants grow slow asf. 2. Have you ever wonder where are all this nutrients you need to buy come from ? Have you ever heard of Phosporus exploitations wich is not infinite and extremely bad for environment but crucial for modern agriculture and making the nutrients jeb is using ? 3. Soil is free, sun is free, if you take a bit of time to learn how the soil is working with all the micros, you lay have heard about permaculture ? the production is quite similar. Conclusion: Hydro is great, i mean for growing quick food in cities, especially in winter, but please, be aware that Humans needs bio diversity to survive, bio does not need humans, we all know that we already lost so much bio diversity the last 50 years, if everyone think that hydro and aqua is important to expand he is wrong, when you grow in hydro, you don't feed anything else than humans, it's all about profit business and selfishness, When you grow naturaly without any processed product, you expand biodiversity, you purifying the air, you feed insects, birds, you are not polluting, you eat food full of diverse micro nutrients. Sorry for my english, I am French.

Yes ur rt , we humans need biodiversity resource.. but this is a great filler..for folks like me in the inner cities east coast.. remember we r abt composed of mainly water.. this food is alive in it's own way.. , in my book at least.. we can def structure water w certain healing frequencies, therefore growing into a healthier plant..

Just an extra FYI he has* grown plants in the ground on his channel as well so he doesn't have a serious bias against soil growing. Plus considering the majority of agriculture is done via soil growing I'm sure he knows this and isn't stupid enough to think that the method of using soil to grow plants he eats is inferior.

Soil grower here I'll let y'all know. Fist of all, horrible choice for a base soil, no grower worth his weight uses MG when there's better out there for cheaper, shit I bet the dirt in your backyard would be better than that at least it might have some life in it, also you cant expect a micro nutrient like silica to be a determining factor in plant growth in soil when completely disregarding any other nutrient, like I know you could do better and I'm not upset, its just kind of a shit experiment, also Water retention could've been fixed my adding coco coir by knowing that the extra exposure to the hot air underneath would cause root damage and reduce plant growth without a stable supply of water, I honestly feel bad for them leafy bois
