Soil Vs Water Pothos Propagation Experiment ( Controversial Outcome ) The results are not like you would expect to see like some of the previous pothos propagation experiments. This one I found to be more focused on user error and mistake forgiveness.

When you soil propagate you need to ensure that the soil is continuously moist for 3 weeks and leave it in a North facing window after such time... treat it like a normal plant. Never done me young I currently have 2 hanging pots propagating with 20 cuttings in each. They are have roots. :)

@marina1183
@marina1183 3 года назад
@@misterpiko I honestly wouldn't say that water prop is better for all plants, as when you go a bit deeper in it, it seems like the roots of water propagated plants are not the same as the roots in soil. So although some plants will root better, these roots will (I guess) be replaced with more efficient roots. I didn't really find experiments on that. However, it would also be a bit difficult to make these experiments as you always destroy a bit of the structure when you pull it out of the soil no matter how nicely you do it. :D

when you propagate in soil, make sure to let the ends callous over! Soil has a lot of bacteria that can cause rot when it comes in contact with the open cut wound. I've found that propagating mature leaves has a higher success rate, not sure why tho.

I microwaved my soil to sterilize it and after 4-5 days my soil propagations are doing just as well as the water! (I also used rooting hormone, and based on the resistance from light tugs I think the soil props are rooting faster than the water :)

I think you’d have better results with the soil if you placed them under a dome to provide higher humidity. With no direct contact with water, and no roots, the cutting are drying up and end up wilting. I put a humidity dome over all of my African violet leaf propagations until they develop roots, and never encounter wilted leaves.

I have some of my pothos cuttings in soil but I’m using a water wicking pot (one of those ones from the big box store) I have it perched up in a deep saucer and I fill that with water once a week or every few days. I like your videos, however, I would try this same experiment in a bit different way. I would let the cutting callous, and then place it in soil/water. And once per week change the water (as this should be regular practice), and keep the soil slightly moist. Would be cool to see an experiment in which you propagate both in water (could even be in a solution of fertilizer), but one cup is clear and the other covered with something dark (on the sides and above) so the roots are not stimulated by light. This makes them slightly confused. :) Some of my cuttings got a new life from when I started covering the clear cups. Thank you for experimenting so we don't have to and have a nice day! :D

@@TechplantChannel I know! :D This is why I started adding fertilizer in my propagations. I tried it with 10% and 20% solution of liquid fertilizer (NPK 4-4-7, no trace elements). Works like a charm! THANK YOU! And I can't wait to try your version of Terraplanter. Would also be cool to do longer experiment with some kind of semi-hydro (to be able to control the nutrients; something inorganic) and treat one with NPK with no trace elements, and other with NPK with trace elements. And then keep them alive for a longer time and see the difference. But if you do, I recommend using 2-pot way instead of making holes in one pot so you can flush the substrate every once in a while (1/month at least). Oh, another one could be also doing semi-hydro with tap water + nutrients and distilled water + nutrients. Also, then one where you adjust Ph to different settings. Oooooor doing some experiments with plants you can use as food. Like basil or whatever. Ah... I am full of ideas! Hope you don't mind. If I had more plants, I would surely do every single one of them :')

i would like to see a redo using a plastic humidity cover for the soil plant. it will ease the need for constant observation and reduce the early stress. End with them both 3 weeks into soil (ex 3weeks + 3 weeks), as the water prorogation needs to adapt to soil eventually to be fair, unless the initial 3 weeks in soil is a complete failure.

@sara_387 3 года назад
I always start my pothos in water...that first check where the roots are just starting is the point I would transition to soil, but usually with a good amount of perlite mixed in. If they are struggling or I may not be able to keep up watering they need to have some sort of humidity dome, that way they won’t dry out as quickly. But I usually don’t need it with pothos. But I think that it would have been better to put the soil in a nursery pot with proper holes, and added perlite.

I noticed that my newly propagated pothos plant that was growing it’s first root in its glass bottle was not looking too good. Half the leaf turned brown but the other half is still doing fine. While half the leaf was brown it grew its first root and even started having a little bit of green (maybe another leaf hopefully) sprout next to its current/main leaf. The last couple of days though the root started slowly turning brown and growing a little slower than before. I did some research and was afraid it might be root rot so I cleaned it a little bit and then cut off the brown not too good looking spots. I still left a little bit of the root but I’m not sure if I did the right thing/ if I killed it because that was its main root. Would cutting its only root a little bit kill the pothos plant?

With soil propagation you water the soil well and then cover the top with a clear plastic bag. That keeps in the humidity for a long time. You can also use a milk jug, cut it open most of the way around hamburger style but leave a small part attached, put holes in the bottom, then in the bottom put dirt and cuttings or seeds and flip the top on after watering as a humidity doem. You can also put the jug in a plate or tray of water to keep up the moisture.

Right, I usually propagate in soil and using a dome makes a world of difference because the enclosed space is saturated with humidity which prevents the plant from sweating so much. Otherwise, your plant will lose more water than it can uptake since it barely has any roots. Also, I sometimes don't even have to water my cuttings at all until they're ready to acclimate to room humidity. As others have mentioned, allowing the plant to develop a callus is good practice too. Burying a freshly cut stem is almost guaranteed to rot, so even though I don't let it develop a callus, I usually lay my cutting horizontally on soil and have great results that way.

i think both methods work just fine, but what i noticed is that (for me at least) water cuttings survive better than soil's. i propagated a bunch of ti cuttings on soil, only 2 out of 4 survived. i also propagated sensitive plant cuttings on soil, none of them survived (the ones that survived are the water cuttings). *however,* water cuttings seem to be prone to failure as well, as i also have time propagating water-rooted pothos into soil, none of them survives (i tried again, this time just directly plant them into the soil, and it now is doing well). this is why now i stick with water cuttings; not that it's fun to watch your cuttings' progress, i think it also has less chance of rotting. i don't exactly know which method is better or worse. all i know is just try to make sure the cuttings are healthy enough and is away from any forms of fungi. the rest is just roll die

One more question, if the cutting has multiple nodes but it has a root from water prop then is it okay if I don't cut and separate into each node and put all nodes into soil? It's hard to say but, make a circle like a crown and put them into the soil. Is it a okay idea?
@KompletterGeist
@KompletterGeist 2 года назад
Not a fair comparison... 1) You didn't let the cutting aera heal off 2) The soil you used looked like the opposite of what aroids need. Should've used a mix with 1/3rd each soil, bark and perlite (or sth similar) 3) These tiny holes in the bottom of your container were not enough to prevent rot. You gotta cut 1cm holes on the sides as well

its ok, i understand where they are comming from. The results of the video don't really solve the question from a mediums perspective and it shifts over to a new perspective being about the fault tolerance of the different methods. WHICH makes me really want to start doing additional experiments putting up different methods against difficult situations like extreme over watering or long periods without adding water to see which one can handle those extremes better

Well if u admittedly forgot to water the ones in soil twice, then it was hardly a fair test...

Right which is why my conclusion was only that water is superior in fault tolerance, but cant conclude water or soil being better for rooting.

This is a bad sample for soil propagation, first that soil looks dry for soil propagation. when doing soil propagation, you have to make sure it is moist for certain number of weeks and please also might try to use sterile media like coco peat or sphagnum moss. I also saw some soil propagation, they don't burry the whole node. take note that most nursery don use water propagation, they mostly use the soil propagation.

@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 3 года назад
What is miss leading about "The controversial aspect of this video is not about the mediums themselves but about the grower" "the soil method is less forgiving when you make mistakes or forget to water it" This video is pointing out that certain methods are far more forgiving to human error. IF you want to know the greatest method for propagating, it requires a laminar flow hood, an autoclave, agar, sterile tools and a lot of other expensive things to perform tissue culture. These videos are made for houseplant growers so i think forgivability to mistake is a huge and important factor when choosing a method.
@lovableasshole
@lovableasshole 3 года назад
@@TechplantChannel and how intense are your grow lights? Are you using a heating pad? Is it on a windowsill? Depending on conditions you can leave cuttings for weeks before the soil dries out, since there isn't much of a plant or roots to pull moisture out of the soil. At the end of the day, you're way more likely to rot out new plants from overwatering than under. You're just giving bad advice, dude.
@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 3 года назад
So what advice did i give that was bad? Ill waste my time repeating this one more time. but in the video i say "I cannot say which medium is better at rooting, however I can conclude that water is far more forgiving and tolerant to mistakes made when propagating." I don't know what part of that you find miss leading
@pokestep
@pokestep 3 года назад
Goodness I'm sorry but that's a shitty research if you "forgot about it" and only mentioned it at the end If you want to compare in a better way, do the best you can. Of course, "your night forget" is a relevant argument but it shouldn't come all the way /after/ showing the results which clearly imply water is better. Water in the water propagations also needed a refill by the looks of it so this looks like a poor research to be Also, pothos is an extremely water loving plant and can grow in water only, as long as its leaves stay above water (it's sometimes used to clean aquariums). So I'm not sure this is the best plant to utilize for this research; unless you're going soecifically for results for pothos. This probably won't apply to many other plants. Good idea; good attempt and methods; terrible scheduling and conclusions. I like that you tried this and I like that you admitted you forgot about it, but it should have come midway through the video rather than at the end.
@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 3 года назад
I see what you are saying which is why i tried to mention in the beginning that these results werent going to make everyone happy. but this channel is for just ordinary people who have plants sitting in the house. In my opinion, the most forgiving methods usually are good to recommend. Ill make videos about TC soon, which will provide the best results however like 1% of houseplant growers would even have access or the funds to do it. Ill take your advice tho, and ill make a much bigger experiment with all methods at once and scheduled once i have some better dedicated space
@pokestep
@pokestep 3 года назад
@@TechplantChannel The comment is maybe a bit harsher than intended, so I apologize if it is, but; it's not really that it "doesn't make everyone happy", I just think it's a really unfair comparison if you forgot to water and still used it, you know? Same for using pothos and generalizing for other plants (which I'm not sure you're trying to do or not). Forgetting is absolutely relevant and I can't say I'm not guilty of it myself, so it's a good point to bring up, I just think it was really late into the video. Of course it's not a science project - it's just not a good way to show off the positives and negatives for general population. I never had any problems with soil propagation myself, and on the other hand, succulents have a hard time transitioning to regular soil if water propagated first. I just think it could be done better. But - certainly a good thing to show off to people (what the options are and why some are better) and I hope it helps you create even better content :)

@@pokestep I agree, ill try and step up my comparisons. I do have many other videos where i compare multiple mediums per species.
