This is a really sore topic for me, my sister has aspergers and was convinced to join a beauty MLM (Arbonne) by a co-worker. At first my parents thought it was a good thing because she was getting out and willingly talking to people and things, but we quickly realised she was just buying tonnes of product and it would sit in a big tub in her house and shed never be able to sell it. She got so into it she even flew to a "conference" of theirs in Las Vegas (bear in mind we live in the west of Australia) and it was only after that she slowed down and eventually stopped doing it. Vulnerable people are the most likely to be scammed into these programs because they get pushed so easily into agreeing to things and don't necessarily understand the consequences of their actions. So yeah, for me being owned by an MLM, even if its not in our country, is enough for me to turn away from the brand.

Absolutely. To put a fine point on it, those “profits” are simply desperate people buying product so that they can get in and stay in the good graces of their upline, product they will never make an actual profit off of themselves. Of course MLM's grew during the pandemic. When businesses were closed and people were trying to find ways to have an income, desperate, naive people turned to side-hustle modeled companies. I was inundated with invites to online legging and sex toy parties. These companies predate on broke and poor people's "by the bootstraps" indoctrination. So much of the US is raised to believe that if you fall on hard times, its shameful to ask for or receive help. When you add in the abysmal wage/cost of living ratio in the US, it's no wonder people get roped into these scams.

That’s my philosophy on CF brands, too. In the last year I’ve expanded my definition of CF to include more than just testing on animals - brands that refuse to have an inclusive shade range, MLMs, general shady behaviors, etc. are just as bad so they fall under my expanded definition of cruel.
@recordtapesbackward
@recordtapesbackward 2 года назад
just keep in mind that there's a big difference between the two things you just described (food and cosmetics). a non-cf parent company of a cf brand that makes them a lot of money won't lead to that parent company eventually deciding to become cruelty-free, but to that parent company buying more cf brands. just look at l'oréal and estée lauder and see which brands they have been purchasing. I know this is not black and white, but I want to raise more awareness for that 🖤

Any time I've found out a company runs as an MLM anywhere, even if it isn't in my country, I can't in all consciousness give them any of my money. I will never feel okay supporting a company that knowingly ruins lives to get ahead. Numbers don't lie. Hey Angie, brazilian viewer here! So Sol de Janeiro only launched in Brazil through Sephora only a couple months ago. I've heard that it's a re-launch like the brand used to be available here before but I'm not sure about that. Even so, the prices are extremely unaffordable to the average consumer. Minimum wage here is R$ 1000/month and the bum bum cream costs R$ 300. Which to me is ironic considering that they source their ingredients from Brazil and that our culture is basically their entire brand concept. Something to think about. Edit: btw, now that you mentioned League, have you watched Arcane yet? It is absolutely breathtaking, the best thing Riot has ever done and I've been playing League for 7 years now.

I have never bought from an mlm either and do not plan on it. It's our choice (and personally I like it as a responsibility) so raise our standards and try to support the brands that also want to make the world a little bit better. I am really glad to find out what brands to stay away from, because the market is so saturated, it helps take away literally half the brands for me. I live in what is broadly considered the MLM capital (Utah) so I am very familiar with MLMs: the type of people who start them, the young mothers who become distributors and inevitably quit when they make no money, the false promises, and the “believing” culture that cultivates MLM schemes that frankly become cult-like. I’ve been to the parties, I’ve even hosted the parties, and looking back I am disgusted with how the distributor used me and pressured me when I was a very young mother myself. Maybe they can't or don't want to manage the day to day management; since their products are now popular and are a trend, it is very likely that they would get better settlement; maybe also the owners don't want to take risk with their own money to expand... I know Lancome is not the greatest (RIP Becca) but Lancome is sold globally, and is at least a lot more reputable. All this tells me is SJS is greedy, because if a product is selling every 20 seconds you would have some options to whom you're bought up from.

SDJ may have wanted access to L’Occitane’s global distribution network, their suppliers and/or their factories. Or maybe the company got too big for the owners to handle it themselves? It seems that they may be having I see this a lot in the beer industry. Recently one of my favorite indie breweries sold out to a conglomerate because the owner wanted to retire. There are all kinds of reasons why a company would sell out to a bigger company.

Very sad news. Imo, MLMs are purely predatory in nature. Also - I notice you tend to apologize a lot for the background noise. I don't ever really hear it or notice it personally, but I understand that it bothers you. Hopefully this advice isn't overstepping, but something I held on to when being trained at a bank is to never apologize for something you have no control over. Instead, if you feel inclined to do so, thank the customer (or audience) for their patience/ understanding. Apologizing implies some sort of fault, like for example if you apologize to a customer for having to wait in line, you're implying that it is not simply a fact of life and business, and you may personally have been able to make the line shorter/faster. That's not the reality of course. So instead, just thank them for their patience. It conveys appreciation and that you're aware of an issue without putting yourself down in any way.

It's a little easier for me since I like SDJ but I wasn't in love with their products, but I can see how this is truly disappointing to those who love the brand. If, for instance, Natasha Denona was purchased by an MLM it would absolutely change my opinion of them, but it might be more difficult to give up.

So many good questions to ask ourselves as consumers! I’m personally upset about companies becoming MLMs or being bought by an MLM. I have worked for two MLM as a teenager and as a struggling young mom and it’s a horrible experience for myself. And I’m good with sales! Such a modern pyramid scheme and so unethical! Therefore I will not be buying their products anymore!

Really dissapointing 😬 i used to work in loccitane ages ago ( in high-school) and used to love their products until they started recruiting "consultants" or atleast in Bulgaria we didn't have any until 2013..🤔 It is sad that we live in a world where mlms still take advantage of people in need and instead of helping them, putting them in even more financial hardship.

Urban Decay too. Urban Decay used to feel so edgy and cool (although I will never not love their liners) and then they sold as well. But isn't being a big indie brand the dream. You have wide distributions and sales, but it's still your company and baby. Maybe you have to answer to investors, but not to another company or parent company. The actual dream.

I would highly recommend a podcast that focuses on promoting women being smarter with their finances. They dedicate about an hour and a half to interviewing a women who's family has participating in MLM's for almost her whole life and what she experienced growing up because of it. Another super annoying tactic MLMs do is way mark up the prices on the products and if you like the product, but don't want to be a consultant or whatever they call it, convince people to sign up as consultants to get the discounted prices, but on auto-ship. I had this happen with beach body because I liked their shakes, but they were so expensive. But then I ended up with SO MUCH leftover because I would only use half a cannister a month. It ended up taking me a year to finish what I had leftover and I gave some away. I cancelled the account. And because I have a decent sized IG, I have gotten asked, almost every day for at least 3-5 years to check out some MLM. They are so predatory for people who are stay at home Moms, have physical illnesses, and other reasons why they are mostly out of the work force. I really liked those shakes, but I don't want to support it.

I agree with you completely about MLM's. My parents were talked into an MLM, that sold vitamins and natural cleaners, right after they lost a child. It has been over 30 years and they are still trying to make the kind of money the company claims is easily made. It is truly an example of insanity, doing the same thing over and over yet expecting a different result. Thanks so much for what you said about people being respectful in the comments. Sadly some people think social media is a free pass to treat others cruelly just because they have a differing opinion! PS what do you think of the Dior Powder No Powder?🤗💖

It's funny you mentioned about Sol de Janeiro being Brazilian inspired but US based and not even being sold in Brazil. As an Australian, I was in Hawaii 2 years (pre-Covid of course) I noticed a lot of stores carrying a hair care line called "Aussie" complete with kangaroo logo and all! I had never seen or even heard of the brand so after a google search, the company is and always been American owned and apparently was phased out of the Australian market back in the early 90's. The more you know!

I 100% agree with you. It's important to ask ourselves questions about companies we support with our money. If I don't like the way a company markets, wouldn't allow my daughters to shop there, or disagree with what they support, I shouldn't buy their products because being a customer is tacit approval of what they're doing. It can get really complicated and is definitely a rabbit hole, so we as consumers must decide where the line is, as you say. And also, "What am I going to do with this knowledge now that I have it?" As for the MLMs, I can't stand them. I know a lot of people involved in that business-model, which is sketchy and underhanded at best. There's even one I know of which undercuts its people by selling for cheaper prices on Amazon! I could rant on that topic for a while but suffice it to say: MLMs target disadvantaged, vulnerable, or just ignorant/undiscerning people (the sick, elderly, unemployed, disabled, moms, military wives, etc) and pull them into a web which is hard to escape. Other than that, thanks for your cogent commentary, Angie, and I love the eye look!

First off, I just want to say how STUNNING your eyeshadow look today is 💙 I love a good bold, cobalt blue. I don’t have any emotional or financial investment into Sol De Janiero since I had never bought any of their products, but after having seen what MLM’s do to people’s lives from friends that have been in them and in documentaries (the LulaRich documentary is one to watch!), I feel MLM’s are sketchy and play on the vulnerabilities of people who really just want to do something other than the 9-5, are parents, are single women, are disabled, etc. and want to make money. It’s very sad, and I hope this doesn’t become a trend with indie brands.

I find it fascinating that some companies like SDJ has been making money off a culture like that and no one has been opposed and i remember when everyone went after Nomad not to long ago. I am 49 and when I was growing up we didn’t have much money but my mom was always buying Mary Kay, princess house, royal prestige, avon, melaleuca you name it and it wasn’t because she wanted this crap it was because she felt obligated to help these struggling women out. I feel like these companies really went after impoverished mothers you couldn’t get childcare to go to work and this was the only thing they could do to make some coin. Meanwhile everything we owned was shopped from yard sales and second hand.

Thanks for bringing this up. I don't buy from L'occitane, and now I won't buy from SDJ. I dumped a youtuber I liked about a year ago because she kept promoting an MLM and haven't looked back. They're absolute trash. They lobby so hard to ensure that lawmakers don't restrict them for the scams they are. Amway is owned by the DeVoss family, and if you're American you know that name from Betsy DeVoss. 🙄 Those companies gaslight their employees and consumers. Monat tells women it's normal for your HAIR TO FALL OUT because their products are so caustic. Thrive and essential oils claim to cure fucking disease. There is no ethical consumption under capitalism, sure, but NOTHING these brands sell is something that cannot be found better in every way somewhere else. Period. Get on r/antimlm and ask for a duplicate product if you're having trouble. It's not like fast fashion where you just can pretend you don't know about the conditions in which the people work - you can physically see stories from people who have lost everything there, and everywhere wise. Lularoe just got blasted in the media and people are still stupidly defending them. FTC has been warning companies for years about making health claims. They're cults. Don't support a cult. Period.

I just want to know why a pretty successful brand would sell to an MLM? Especially coming from a company in the US that has seen all the lawsuits and documentaries on LuLa Roe.... How could that be stable financial backing? I like these kinds of videos, I watch more videos like this than I do beauty content. I think it's important to talk about what is going on in the business, because a product is a product... it's very easy to not know what it is attached to. It's like seeing pictures of Politicians and thinking "Well that looks good, I'll buy it"... why do we treat makeup that way? Beauty can be fun, but it's also a business that keeps capitalism thriving. I feel I sound anti-makeup.... I love makeup, but I love people living a happy and healthy life more so I would like to put my money in a company that also loves that.
