**** I don't recommend this anymore, due to the unreliability of the cheap solar lights used. A PP3 9v battery is probably the easiest alternative. ******
This is how to convert a cheap pound store or dollar store solar led light into an electric slug or snail fence.

Though now I read below that you no longer recommend this method, but a 9v battery instead. There must be a way to have a solar recharging 9v battery using a cheap solar unit... I wish my electronics knowledge was already there...

Hello, I was thinking of building a slug repeller from old garden lights, I just looked this up to see if it was already being done and Walla I find this, so I will go make my own version. You can make a simple version without the solar light, all you need to do is run 2 parallel copper wires about 1cm apart around the bed clipped or glued, using a multi AA battery case (more than 2 battery will work better higher voltage) or 9v PP3 battery with the clip on connector would be easier. All you have to do is connect

Other sites recommend 6-9V; at 12V, you’ll kill the slugs, attracting more to eat the corpses.

Some lights suffer from water ingress into the solar panel. I now put an old jam jar ( Bon Maman conserve jars fit perfectly) over the top of the light which stops any problems.

Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for. Two quick beginners questions: could I just leave out the LED and attach both wires directly to the board? I am not keen on the light and would rather have the electric fence be powered a bit longer. Moreover, could the setup be changed to have 9V instead of 6? (this is what I had really good success with in the past). Thanks!
@techydiy
@techydiy 7 лет назад
+Tim Kietzmann If I remember correctly the led is necessary for the circuit to function. The solar lights that I used tended to work ok for a few months and then died from various causes. Unless you have the time to experiment then I can't recommend this method anymore, a 9v battery is a much better option,.
@TimKietzmann
@TimKietzmann 7 лет назад
Ah, that is good to know. A 9V battery is what I am using right now, but was hoping to replace it with a Solar-based solution. Thanks.
@mattburrows2615
@mattburrows2615 6 лет назад
Tim Kietzmann the led would not light as it is in series with the fence wires (note how he said to joint the fence wires to test and light the led.) the led is not necessary for circuit function. You may get a very slight flash from the led when it zaps a snail if it shorts the connection between the led and the board via the fence wires.

Can these lights be modified to be solar battery chargers? If 9v batteries are more effective, it seems logical to just use one of those & keep its power level topped up with a solar charger. 3v seems too low to do this task.
@russellg3775
@russellg3775 5 лет назад
Yes, this is what I've done. I just used a standard 9v battery since the recharge rate is low enough not to cause a problem.

Ingenious. I'm thinking of a similar setup to keep skunks away from my beehives (they will come at night and eat the bees from their entrance). You said it's safe for animals like your dog, but would it deter a mammal? If not is their a way to get more shock for a mammal? -Thanks.
@techydiy
@techydiy 8 лет назад
No this wont have any effect on mammals, it's only a deterrent for slugs or snails. You need a proper electric fence operating on much higher voltage. I have a video that shows how to get about 300v out of a disposable camera which gives quite a shock, but I suspect you need something designed for the purpose.

These produce like 3.2 volts though, is that enough to deture a snail or slug?
@techydiy
@techydiy 7 лет назад
The capacitor charges to roughly 6 volts ( The circuit produces square wave pulses around 9v peak, less the 3v of the led ) which is enough to deter and not kill snails. However the cheap solar lights are very unreliable so I don't recommend this..

Hi, what is the purpose of the capacitor? What is the output voltage? It is just out of curiosity and thank you for the tip about pre-tinning.
@techydiy
@techydiy 7 лет назад
+Beurre Pinotte About 6v. It stores up charge and gives the slug a bit more current. The led lights are very cheap though and quite often fail for one reason or another, so if your going to do it, I would just use a pp3 9v battery.
@pinotte23
@pinotte23 7 лет назад
OK thank, I will use 2 rechargeable 9 volt batteries in parallel. Since they lose some of their charge when not in use, once in a while I will remove one to charge it. Then I will do the same for the other one once the 1st one is charged.
@techydiy
@techydiy 7 лет назад
For a real deterrent, you can use three wires for the fence, 9v batteries in series. * -ve +ve * -ve +ve * If a big snail tries to bridge the wires it gets 18v.
@pinotte23
@pinotte23 7 лет назад
3 wires??? 9 volt would be enough and since rechargeable batteries lose their charge over time, it would be OK to charge one then the other from time to time. Now can you explain about 3 wires?
@techydiy
@techydiy 7 лет назад
+Beurre Pinotte just another option. Big slugs learn to cross the wires if they are narrow, small slugs can get past if the wires are too wide, so you put three or four wires in to make the barrier wider. Snails farmers use many wires woven into a net.
