Solar "burglar proof" light.

This rather oddly named device is simply a self-adhesive module that you put in a location where it is exposed to sunlight, and it charges its internal cell during the day and blinks a blue LED at night. It's mainly intended to imply that active security electronics are in use.
The circuitry inside is an interesting alternative application for a fairly common special purpose chip.
If you enjoy this channel you can help support it with a dollar for coffee, cookies and blinky LED things at:-

The BEST way to prevent your vehicle from being stolen is to wire a secret kill circuit. The thief will not be able to figure out why it won't crank. Unless they have a wrecker, your car will be where you parked it.

@drakesavage1979 6 лет назад
TehSlan * Mine is wired to one of the switches on my dashboard. Cannot tell you how many times I forgot at first. But eventually, your memory will get the hang of turning that switch on before attempting to crank. But I do like the way your mind made that subliminal connection ! lol
@100XNX
@100XNX 6 лет назад
kill switches are great and all, most modern vehicles have fuel pump and starter kills built in without the microchip on your key. But this only prevents the vehicle from being started and driven away. This won't prevent it from being broken into, or towed away. The implication of an alarm (i.e. this blinking LED) is that it will give an audible sound if the vehicle is broken into, or moved.
@sussexbob182

Hey Clive, a question about the solar lights in general. If you measured the output from the solar cell whilst in 'average' uk sunlight can you then calculate the amount of charging time needed per hour of operation at night, and if so is this likely to be similar between makes and models of solar lights? I'm guessing some must be more efficient than others? Love the videos. Thanks..

A while ago you helped me with a project using a solar LED string. At its heart was the same chip, and as soon as you read the number off of it I recognized it instantly! You had the same advice for me (change the inductor) so that I could drive higher powered LEDs. I changed from a 47µH to a 23µH and it works great! The only downside is that the lights don't stay on as long. And actually, since the project is a "welcome" sign, I don't want it to stay on into the wee hours of the night anyway. I wonder if it's possible to buy just the chips and assorted components for a more bespoke application?

Re. your garden solar lights (changing the inductors), would it have been easier (and effective) to just slip a ferrite bead over the existing on-board inductor, rather than desoldering, then resoldering a higher value? Obviously the "exact" value was not critical, rather you just needed "a bit more inductance" to limit current flow? I'm asking this because I've used this approach on our garden solar lights, with remarkable results ("on all night" even in our Winter).

The problem with anything containing a Ni-MH or Li-Poly left in the sun in a car is the battery will get destroyed in a very short space of time. Dashcam owners are very familiar with this problem. Perhaps using a super capacitor would be a better option (albeit possible slightly more expensive).

And, of course, to prove that this won't fool anyone. :)

Got myself one of these after watching your review, as I also thought it was a neat application. Unfortunately it stopped working a couple of months after being installed in my car. Probably a dodgy cell... Does yours sitll work? Climate conditions probably aren't the greatest in a car anyways, with high temperatures daytime, and below freezing temperatures in winter at night (I live in Sweden). I guess there isn't a practical way of changing the cell given the way the case is assembled?..

that huge bundle of solar garden lights youve got, are they the kind that has 400+ LEDs all running off a single AA cell? I saw some in that horrible B&M Bargains shop a while ago and couldnt believe they only had the one cell. It seems like they either shouldnt work at all or the battery should last about 5 minutes.
@_Piers_
@_Piers_ 8 лет назад
I bought a set a couple of years ago from eBay, it had 250 LEDs and worked really for about a year then stopped working. I was surprised when I opened it to see just one AA cell. It used to stay on for a good few hours after dark, so the LEDs couldn't have been getting more than a couple of milliamps each. I keep meaning to fix and improve it...
@-yeme-
@-yeme- 8 лет назад
doesnt seem right does it. but I just looked on b&ms website to make sure I wasnt talking bollocks and it really is a string of 480 LEDs and it says on the box 1xAA battery inside. how.

First thing to try is replacing the existing rechargeable cell with another, or if it's in a holder then try an ordinary alkaline cell to see if the LEDs light.
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 8 лет назад
It will be using a boost circuit to run the LEDs at a few tens of milliamps which is enough to make all 480 glow visibly
