This is how I set my tool shed up with solar power
I will try to list everything here, most of what I got was from Amazon.
$107 HQST 100 Watt,12 Volt Solar Panel (amzn.to/2UVRrNb) (affiliate link)
$20 Charge Controller from Amazon (amzn.to/3sSKNnA) (affiliate link)
$90 1000W Power Inverter amzn.to/3yohXwn) (affiliate link)
I went overkill for most on this, but I wanted to power a chainsaw if needed, otherwise you would only need to put in $37 for something really good (amzn.to/3gJtXT9) (affiliate link)
$11 Battery to inverter cables (amzn.to/3zlE0oN) (affiliate link)
$64 35AH 12V Deep Cycle Battery (amzn.to/3jrp1Eq) (affiliate link)
$14 12V LED lights (amzn.to/3ykhiw0) (affiliate link)
$5 light wiring (amzn.to/3yAQZ4Z) (affiliate link)
$6 Switch (amzn.to/3Dr5Gv2) (affiliate link)
$38 Solar Panel Wires (amzn.to/3kvLO0V) (affiliate link)
$13 Battery Cables (amzn.to/3zpYm0b) (affiliate link)
$16 Conduit Pipe (www.homedepot.c...)
$17 Unistrut (www.homedepot.c...)
$13 For the Satellite Mount: (amzn.to/3t316OM) (affiliate link)
Then figure $20 for various nuts an bolts.
So for me it came out to about $434, but considering that I paid high for my inverter, and over paid on cables/wire (you can use cheaper cables, but I went with the pre-set ones for convenience), you could do it for just over $350.
After I set it up, I added fuses to the system, see that here:

Great Setup. I have a solar shed set up too. It runs three T.V’s and fans as well as Lights. We primarily set it up for Storms in Florida.

I know this video is pretty old, but to save a newbie from making a mistake, please be sure you connect the charge controller to your battery bank BEFORE connecting the solar panel leads to it. If not you run the risk of burning out your charge controller.

You should fit a circuit breaker or fuse between the batter and inverter. For example if you are using a 1000w inverter then use a 100amp breaker, 1500w inverter then use a 150amp breaker or fuse etc. The wire looks thick enough but it's best to keep the inverter as close to the battery bank as possible to limit any voltage drop.

@@mitchgrant7385, if your question is directed to me, I went a less expensive route. All I really wanted was some interior lighting. I grabbed the 100 watt solar kit from Harbor Freight and two of their 35 Ah batteries. There's a couple of 12 v bulbs plugged in to the regulator and for general lighting that is fine. I also have one of their Jupiter 1000w inverters in case I need the odd corded 120vac appliance or tool. IF I ever want a little more power, I think I will upgrade the panels etc.

Home Depot has the Tuff Shed's down here that are all made of nice wood. They want nearly $4,000 for one of them. The city where I live only allows sheds to be no larger than 10x10. If I ever get one, I plan to insulate it and make fill the roof full of solar panels and put the wall unit A/C in it, or at least fans for ventilation. I am looking to do this in the distant future. I would still love to have a shed. We need the space. I don't like cheap sheds. I want one that I can convert into a room.

My question is, could you have just placed the solar panels on the roof of the shed instead of the a-hole and pipe method?
@burrheadjr
@burrheadjr 3 года назад
Yes, I could absolutely drill into the roof and mount it there. However, If you put it on the roof, keeping it cleaned off will be a little bit harder, because you need to get a ladder. Also, if it is on the roof, making adjustment to the tilt will be a little bit tougher too. The mount that allow you to adjust the panel tilts on rooftops are a bit pricey, and with the pole, I could get away with using uni-strut and a satellite dish mount. I also liked that I didn't have to worry about accidentally causing a leak on roof shed. Overheating can be an issue to roof mount set ups too if the mount does not allow enough air to get under the panel, I don't have to worry about that at all on the pole. In my case, I also get a slightly sunnier position on the pole, because the shadows of the trees around the house cover the roof first.

I'm no electrician but isn't 100W solar panel a bit overkill for a couple 4.5W LEDs? I'm looking to do almost the exact same thing but was thinking of using a cheaper 25W or 40W panel. Would that not work too? Maybe you also want to use the power for other sources. Great setup though.

That would work too, mine is overkill for just lights. I planned to be using the power outlets more often than I do, but I can plug in things if I want. I am also planning on adding a USB powered fan for the summer, that I will plug into the charge controller USBs. I can also charge my phone there.

You would have to check the specs of the laptop to know exactly, but I would imagine you would need to upgrade the solar panel or add more panels, and upgrade the battery from the one that i have. But if those parts are upgraded (maybe also sine wave inverter), you could have laptops running on it fairly consistently. Unless you had a stretch of cloudy days in a row while you were also using the laptops, then you would just need to curb your use until the sun recharges the batteries.

Question, my shed is 192sf . It’s for my wife as a small she shed. Her power requirements are 2 led shop lites a window ac unit small frig. Maybe 4-6 120v outlets( maybe) do you thing this unit is ok or something a little bigger.
@burrheadjr
@burrheadjr 4 года назад
AC units take up a LOT of power. The LEDs take very little power. A fridge really depends, but if you get Dometic efficient fridge (they look like coolers), replace the AC unit with a small efficient fan, and use LEDs I would say that with that usage alone, assuming the fridge runs 24 hours a day, and the fan and lights are getting used maybe 4 hours a day, that those things alone would mean that you would want a 50 Amp Hour Battery, and to be able to recharge that, you probably need 3 100 Watt solar panels. That doesn't take into account any usage from the outlets, and that would depend on what you wanted to run off those. So you would need to increase from there. Those are just rough estimates though.

You will probably need a bigger 12V battery than I have, and more than 1 solar panel to keep the battery charged. The size of the battery and the number of panels that you need would demand on how much power the AC unit would take. Just a rough estimate, would be that you would need an 700AH battery, and 15 solar panel (at 100Watts each) to accomplish that. (AC units are power hogs).

A couple of reasons. It is easier to clean on the pole It gets less shade over on the pole. The pole with the satellite mount was actually easier to install then the roof. On the pole, I can change the angle from season to season to match the sun On the pole, I don't have to worry about botching a roof install and causing a leak. The advantage of the roof mount would be that it looks better, and that is about it.

Do you think if I get two 100 watts mono panels and four batteries just like in your video, I can run LED lights, flat screen TV, and a fan most of the day with good sunlight?
@burrheadjr
@burrheadjr 4 года назад
I think you could, if you got a really good energy efficient TV. I am just guessing that if you got a 19 inch LED TV, with 4 35a/h batteries, that you could run it for 12 hours. I wouldn't try anything above a 32 inch. LED lights and Small fans can be run with minimal power. But then you need to think what are you playing on the TV? DVD players, Roku, and other things will increase energy usage. But using an Antenna shouldn't. So I think as long as you are picking energy efficient devices, and are keeping an eye on usage and recharging, you could. But you may need a day or so every now and then as recharge only days if you find you are using up too much. Don't drain those batteries below 50%.

How long will last the batterie if you use the ac power for regular lights not leds tnx
@burrheadjr
@burrheadjr 3 года назад
Theoretically, weather I use AC or DC power shouldn't make TOO much of a difference. The big difference will be using regular incontinence bulbs vs LED lights. Running a couple standard 60 watt bulbs would last just under a couple of hours before I would want to shut it off to prevent the battery from getting below half way.

burrheadjr so your inverter don’t have a safety to turn it off before drain the batterie? Tnx for answer
@burrheadjr
@burrheadjr 3 года назад
@@fishblue70 The power inverter does have a switch to turn it off and on, you can see me hit it at about 4:00. If nothing is plugged into the inverter, the power drain is minimal. It will drawn some power, but not much.

I think it did, I remember there being something odd like that, but at the same time, the clips could only go in one way, so there was no issue.

Can you run the DC lights and the AC inverter at the same time? Looking to power up with AC voltage a heat tape for water linexand a heat lamp only below 35F.
@burrheadjr
@burrheadjr 4 года назад
You can, BUT, if you are planning to run any appliences that are designed to create heat, watch out, they will draw a lot of power, will push your inverter to the limits, and will drain your battery quick. Either make sure you have a huge solar system (inverter, battery, panels to recharge, think gauge wires) or skip the heating appliences

@@burrheadjr well that is the whole purpose of the project. Trying to eliminate running 300 feet of number 4 wire from house panel to back of property. Want to set up chicken coupe and run. Need to have a heat trace to keep waterline from freezing and a modest heat lamp inside coupe only when under 35F. Not sure how to load calculate this, size wiring, inverter size etc. Hoping to use low wattage 12 Vdc LED light in shed, run and one in coupe that would only be on for 10 min if back there after dark.

Nice work! One question: why not stick the panel on the roof?
@burrheadjr
@burrheadjr 7 лет назад
A couple of reasons. If you put it on the roof, keeping it cleaned off will be a little bit harder, because you need to get a ladder. Also, if it is on the roof, making adjustment to the tilt will be a little bit tougher too. The mount that allow you to adjust the panel tilts on rooftops are a bit pricey, and with the pole, I could get away with using uni-strut and a satellite dish mount. Overheating can be an issue to roof mount set ups too if the mount does not allow enough air to get under the panel, I don't have to worry about that at all on the pole. In my case, I also get a slightly sunnier position on the pole, because the shadows of the trees around the house cover the roof first.

You really need to consider adding fuses and that inverter is quite a bit too large for your battery. put the battery in a battery box and protect ANY unfused leads to prevent arc flash accidents. There should be no need to clean it or tilt it. you are going to have some galvanization corrosion between the aluminum frame of the PV module and the steel struts. You should consider putting some insulating material between them.

My question is how did you get that thick wire into them tiny holes in charge controller? Modify?
@burrheadjr
@burrheadjr 6 лет назад
The inputs in the charge controller are big enough for the thick wire without modification.

Shouldn't the battery be outside of the shed so you don't breathe the lead acid fumes ?
@burrheadjr
@burrheadjr 6 лет назад
It is a sealed AGM (Absorbent glass mat) lead acid battery. It should be safe for indoor changing so long as it isn't punctured.

Could I do this same setup but add a second battery in parallel? Or would I need a bigger solar system?
@burrheadjr
@burrheadjr 4 года назад
I think you could do it. The battery will allow you to use power, the solar recharges that power. So there is no requirement that big battery banks need a lot of solar, it will just take longer to recharge. An example of where that may be helpful, is if you have a shed where you use it heavily for 1 day, but only once a week, or once a month, so that the single panel has plenty of time to recharge the large battery bank. If however, you will be using it often, then you will want more panels, enough to recharge your usage in the time that you plan on using it again. You will have to crunch the numbers to see what that will exactly come out to, but it will all depend on what you are looking for.

What gauge wire did you use that runs from battery to light switch
@burrheadjr

I think you are talking about the small wire that actually come from the Charge controller, and then run to the switch, which then goes to the lights. That is a 22 gauge wire: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001JT1CEE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For me it came out to about $434, I overpaid for some of the items (buying heavier duty items than I actually needed), so I would normally say you could get it for less if you wanted, but with the crazy inflation, who knows. Take a look at the description to see the exact items that I bought (just keep in mind that you can pick different items for a better price).

How much did you pay and could you run 3 lights
@burrheadjr
@burrheadjr 3 года назад
For me it came out to about $434, but considering that I paid high for my inverter, and over paid on cables/wire (you can use cheaper cables, but I went with the pre-set ones for convenience), you could do it for just around $350. I am sure I could have gotten 3 lights, some setups use 6 smaller lights. The lights don't use that much power if they are LEDs, so adding more lights would not be too much of a problem. Click on the description for links and prices for everything I used.
