I absolutely LOVE this! Not only is it a cheaper solution to solar storage, it is a critical second life for car batteries. This niche really needs to go mainstream beyond the DIY one-off projects. Obviously used batteries have shortened life and contractors couldn't offer much warranty, but if the price was right, people would be ok with that. It's especially encouraging that you have had success using different sizes and levels of degradation, so the system can be expanded or have one piece swapped out. It's also great that those breakers are dual rated. Hopefully these EV batteries will become easier to get.

I bought the Smart ForTwo off ebay a few years ago, but recently I've been getting EV batteries from BatteryHookup.com. I look for pricing around $100/kWh. BMS is an extra $15/kWh on average for this system, but totally necessary. Thanks for watching!

Ben, if there is a good solar information channel out there from not only an installers viewpoint but, that of a consumer as well that beats your channel, I've yet to see it. Your information is understandable too even old guys like me. I just wish more people would find your channel and subscribe to keep you helping us that need it. Like the used refrigerator idea. It would be even better to find a upright freezer but, the older ones never break down if they are not moved a lot. Good luck finding a 225AMP Square D QO breaker box. I just paid a small fortune for another one.

Very cool system. Love the fridge idea for regulating temperature. Do you have a video of cost break down? It would be interesting to see how that cost compares to other options.

How about a video on the battery monitor and setting up for State of Charge.

Cool battery! You and Poz got me into NMC type batteries. It’s also cool you can have all those different capacity batteries together in parallel without issues. You might remember I had the 16s Chevy volt batteries. I have since sold them and got LiFepo4 cells. It’s definitely a learning curve switching. TBH I like the NMC batteries better due to voltage being a much better indication of SOC, but at least these are not as explody..

Nice setup . Heard signature solars batteries are working with a closed loop system with Schneider now . Finally was able to snag a older context 6048 along with my 4048 .

I have used parallel packs as well. The main issues that I've found is all the micro-cycles between packs. When you run a load, all the packs should be at identical voltages. Once the load is removed the packs will normalize to no-load voltages which are quite disparate. As you mentioned, the highest packs will essentially recharge the lower voltage packs. But that micro-cycle in which no work was done counts towards your lifetime cycles on the cells. Hence they degrade at a significantly greater rate.

Thanks, Ben. Nice system. I'm not drawing massive power either so I'm not particularly worried about the batteries being over discharged/imbalance due to a long running massive loads. My worst load is in the evening in summer when I run a 3TON AC unit off the batteries when the sun goes down until it's bed time. No issues. I like the seed starter mats. I'm planning a Lithium battery expansion (not LifePO4) and I want them outside as I already have the batteries so I'll probably do something similar in an out building.

I picked up the fridge for free at the local drop off center. They looked at me a little funny, but let me go sort through the 50 or so they had there. Told me if I wanted to bring it back, it would be $10... 😃

Totally agree they balance out current just flows to where it is needed the use of these batteries in a home load is like a retirement centre. lol

It tickles them a little bit... I get a lot of people asking about active cooling for them but it's just not needed. A full charge throughout the day will raise the temp maybe 5 degrees.

I have a question where did you get those BMS the 40 amp discharge and 40 amp charge
@benssolarandbattery
@benssolarandbattery Год назад
The 40a charge and discharge I got direct from Daly on Ali Express a few years ago. The newer ones I've got off ebay or Amazon have been 40a discharge 20a charge. I have these overcurrent protected at 20a anyway and as a rule of thumb, never go over half of the rating with anything like this.

How do you keep the inside of the refrigerator from molding?
@benssolarandbattery
@benssolarandbattery Год назад
I threw a few large silica gel packets in there on top of the batteries just in case. I'll probably prop the door open during the summer though. The fridge is just there to keep them warm in the winter.

Hi Ben which charge controller/inverter do you use to charge the batteries to 67v? None of the systems I can find want to run above 48v nominal. I have a stack of 16s 60v modules I’d like to use on my system. Many thanks.
@benssolarandbattery
@benssolarandbattery Год назад
Hi Jonny, currently I'm using the Schneider XW Pro inverter and 100a 600v Charge Controller. I can get up to around 65.5v with that which is plenty for a 16s NMC battery. Previously, I used the Sol-Ark 12k which was good up to 63v, leaving a little bit on the table. I'm ok with not going over 4.1v per cell with these.

It doesn't really get too hot here, I think worse case I'd add a vent and a fan for the summer.

I'm not familiar with the Volvo or Leaf batteries. Are they LFP or NMC type?
@benssolarandbattery
@benssolarandbattery Год назад
They're both NMC. Most all EV batteries are as of right now. I've heard that tesla is starting to use LFP in some areas, but NMC has a higher energy density which makes it better for EV's.
@arleneallen8809
@arleneallen8809 Год назад
@@benssolarandbattery Yes. Thanks for answering. The charge curve for NMC type batteries is very different than LFP, so that tells me the BMS you're using is for that type of battery. I've been looking around for an inexpensive NMC type BMS and had no luck. There's the Batrium of course, but that's a high dollar powerwall type solution.
@benssolarandbattery
@benssolarandbattery Год назад
@@arleneallen8809 I've been using the Daly BMS's for a couple years with great success. I've heard poor reviews about their "smart" BMS, but these "dumb" ones have worked great. I threw a link in the description for the exact one I used. It is only 40a rated, and I only trust them to do half of their rating, but if you're paralleling a bunch of modules they work well.

Just be careful folks raw cells dont trun off and they can put out thousands of amps. I have a 70kwh pack like this. I work with 2000 amp 480v industrial control cabinets every day. NPFA70E trained arc flash gear etc. But at home low voltage i let my judgment lapse and arc flashed myself. 3 rd degree bruns on 3 fingers on my right and and my thumb on my left hand
