I hope you coming back in our province this coming holy week and you see the real festival and you experience to wear the costume for one week.. thank you for showing our native culture around the world..also your friend kumar our province is waiting for your next visit again...take care gladiator from canada...
The Moriones is actually woven around the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is reenacted in Holy Week. The main character is Longinus, the Roman centurion who was converted when he witnessed the Crucifixion and the events that happened around it (St Matthew's Gospel, chapter 28:50-54 reads: "And Jesus cried again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom; and the earth shook, and the rocks were split; the tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. When the CENTURION and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe, and said, 'Truly this was the Son of God!'"). A pious tradition says that Longinus was blind on one eye (this is why the mask he wears fetches the highest price after the event, because it is the only mask with a blind eye) but was cured when the blood and water that came from Christ's side which he (Longinus) had pierced with a lance restored his sight (cf Gospel of John 19:34). This is reenacted on GOOD FRIDAY. After his conversion and Christ's resurrection (which is reenacted just a couple of days later on EASTER SUNDAY), Longinus goes around telling everybody what has happened. The Roman soldiers are instructed to arrest him. The chase begins there. (When i was a kid, Longinus would go all over the town, even into the houses, as the other soldiers came in search of him. Everyone in the whole town, young and old, thus became an actor in the play. Whoever thought the script up was a genius in audience participation! Now the chase has been shortened so the tourists don't get bored waiting for him to be caught.) He is then beheaded and paraded around town. The idea of doing penance while wearing the mask is added on, because after all, penance is the theme of Holy Week.

Not so fast--one of the first foreign soldiers who fought with Filipinos actually deserted the American forces and joined the Filipino revolutionaries against the Americans. "In 1899, during a campaign on the island of Luzon to entrap the Filipino revolutionary president Emilio Aguinaldo, a 21-year-old buffalo soldier named David Fagen deserted from the American army. He wasn’t homesick. Young Fagen decided to join the Filipino revolutionaries and quickly took up arms against his former countrymen. In time, he became a guerrilla leader of such renown that his Filipino fighters called him “General Fagen.” www.zocalopublicsquare.org/2019/04/16/19th-century-african-american-solider-fought-filipino-liberation/ideas/essay/
@@jammiles3186 it was 1899. Not that long after the American Civil War and President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. The height of the Jim Crow era where blacks basically no human rights. He figured he would join forces and fight for a people who had finally freed themselves from the Spaniards after 378 years of colonialism only to find themselves subjects of another colonial power.
