They have simply pledged assistance (some of which has been delivered) but they have always said that any negotiation on the territory of Ukrane will be down to Ukraine (not NATO). The land around kherson wasn't defendable for the russians at the time, bad logistics south of the river, and then the river itself. The infrastructure is much more developped at the ukrainian held side. It was against Russian doctrine to hold that piece of land, and they likely would have lost everything they had there

There is one obvious possible outcome of the energy thing: The countries depending on oil imports cut their border connections to Ukraine in response to them stopping the oil flow. There are likely other grid interconnects between EU and UA. But less connection points means less combined power flow from the EU to UA. UA would probably just let the oil flow again.

Before the SMO even launched, Russia was happy to let the east stay in Ukraine, and was only going to liberate Crimea. That deal is off the table now, and all Russian Oblasts will likely return back to Russia, which is all of the east. What's left of Ukraine won't ever be big enough to cause any serious problems after that.

Willy with all due respect Sir you really need to appreciate that Ukraine despite it's huge size has a massive wealth distribution problem. US Senator Lindsey Graham described 12Trillion in commodities, what he did not say is almost all of this wealth is exclusive to the regions Russia already controls, not to mention Russia will claim rights to all the oil and natural gas deposits in the Sea of Azov as well as the northeastern part of the Black Sea. Please do the research on the mineral wealth of Donbas alone it is staggering much less Luhansk, Sea of Azov, you will discover a whole new reason why the West is so determined to drive Russia out of Ukraine. This is the same reason the US in Syria controls everything east of the Euphrates as everything east of the river is the oil and gas wealth of the country, the US is not leaving Syria anytime soon - surely you are still not naive enough to thing this war is about democracy?
