Best practice when testing solenoids is to test them at operating temperature because they expand and so does the fluid. This expansion can cause the solenoid to not function correctly due to contaminates and damage internally in the solenoid that may not be detectable at lower temps.

Never thought of that, but makes sense, thanks for the comment.

I guess that's why my faulty solenoid works good when cold

Not to sound too ignorant but how do you get them operating temp before testing them ?

Great video very detailed. I like the bucket idea with measurements instead oil catch pen. I appreciate your demonstration of the solenoid functionality. Thanks and sorry for the mess.

Good video, keep up the good work. Lots of Toyota owners out there. I drive Vibes which is basically a Matrix. Also users like to see involvement / replies to their questions so reply if you can. Wishing you success in your videos.

That's a good video, thank you for your efforts. You seem to know your stuff. Some good pointers there as well. One help would have been to show where and how you attached the drain hose going to the bucket. That is, other than the schematic showing connection to the radiator. I just did a filter change on my Matrix, '09, and used Maxlife. One curious thing about the transmission behavior is before the transmission downshifts from 4 to 3 I think I can feel the lockup disengage, then a delay, then the downshift. I suspect the software tries to limit downshifts for optimum fuel economy. But when in cruise control that downshift can be quite harsh. I have the fluid level slightly over the fill line and that seems to help. The solenoid you showed that was not removable; can that valve body drop out without removing the transmission? I see there is an oversized lockup control valve kit available for this transmission. I wonder if that's what I'm going to be looking at eventually.

Where do you clamp the test light to test the solenoid? I am assuming on positive battery terminal? Very good video.

Hey brov, i do really appreciate your very detailed. I am currelty working on a matrix myself as a first timer and your vid has given me a lot more insight on the whereabouts i need to know. Now if its not too much or a request, could you do a vid on mpv mazda gear oil change and solenoid checks as well? or if you know where to point for me, i'd sure will apreciate this. Keep up the good work brov.

They say never to flush transmission fluid. What's your view on that
@BrenoAutoGarage
@BrenoAutoGarage 5 месяцев назад
It’s a controversial topic that’s for sure. All the experts say if a tranny fails after a fluid flush/change it was near the end anyways. But plenty of folks think it causes them to fail, either by dislodging sludge which clogs passages, or because the clean fluid doesn’t have all the dirty friction material causing slippage of the worn friction surfaces. Flush machines at shops push new fluid through under pressure, which seems more likely to dislodge sludge to me. Using the transmission’s own pump like I did seems to be the safest. And keep the old fluid, if it starts to slip afterwards put the old fluid back in, or use a stop slip additive.

Fluid looks like it was never changed. How many miles on the matrix? I've changed my Corolla every 30k and added an additional cooler in line to radiator.
@BrenoAutoGarage
@BrenoAutoGarage 10 месяцев назад
270k miles! Who knows what the previous owners did, but given the condition of everything else probably not much. It’s great to hear you’re doing all the preventative maintenance to can.

@@BrenoAutoGarage yeah. i have an 05 corolla S and the trans fluid was NEVER touched and serviced until about 300k miles. it threw p0741 at me and there is a deep/loudish hum from the transmission now. it still shifts like a dream though? more gas burning and sluggishness, and it hesitates when accelerating. then the code went away. problems didn't though. have no idea what it could be but 2 years later it's still running on whatever went bad. mostly because i have no idea where to start since the code is gone and the deep hum, sluggishness, hesitation and gas mileage issues aren't really affecting me TOO much besides making me worry it's already shot/going to be shot anyway

@5:30 I guessed Toyota did a po po on this one Matrix (may be AWD), I wonder my FWD's 2009 Corolla LE is the same.

Most of the rebuild kits are listed for both the U341E (FWD) and U341F (AWD), so I bet they are nearly identical internally.

It’s always the worst when the simple solutions don’t work. Hopefully you can drive it a while and get it fixed when the time comes.
