Solid - A Better Web (Simply Explained)

We have no privacy on the web anymore. Our data is stored with many third-parties, some even sell it behind our backs. Solid aims to put all our data in a single place that's under our control (pods). Changing the way we deal with personal data.
Solid was started by the inventor of the web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee. I can't wait to see the next generation of apps and services being built on Solid.
🙏 Special thanks to Ruben Verborgh for providing feedback on my script.

I really like the idea! I only see two problems that have to be solved: 1.) How to secure the pod data from not constitutional governments? 2.) How to convince the big services to set the data free?

Just an idea: 1) running pod on your local machine 2) only by legal requirements as is for example GDPR

@@Paul-lq6zp Interesting, but still, the security issue is not to be underestimated, putting all the data in one place increase the chances of losing all of it, of being hacked and things like that

Healthcare could benefit tremendously. Going to a different medical provider and filling out a form with personal info could be a thing of the past. They could scan a QR code and you tap "Accept sharing medial history with XYZ, including..." . Enrolling in a different school, booking a flight. Amazing how we can run this like Docker ourselves.

I must be missing something cause the idea of Spotify allowing users to revoke or control their own data in any way is laughable. Is the idea that the public will prefer privacy-oriented companies in the future? Cause I very much doubt that existing companies are going to embrace privacy and user empowerment, especially if it means letting them seamlessly switch to a competitor. Regardless, I don't think privacy is going to win out as a reason people pick one service over another in the near future. And if the public doesn't care, I don't see what incentive future companies will have to create privacy-focused business models when data is already so valuable and it's only becoming more valuable.

Why I need a hosted pod for that? I think it can just as well be on my local PC. Some data you need to share only at the moment when you actually use the service. What the purpose of say youtube accessing your watching history in order to suggest your new video - when you don't open it?

Indeed, you can also self-host a pod at your home. I did mention that in the video. It's the ultimate form of control (but also responsibility).

Companies have a specific budget for ads, regardless of how effective the ad is. Companies pay for the best ad services available. If there are no personal ads, the same money will just go to the next best thing. In fact, being in control of ad data could be a good thing, as it could allow each user to choose specific interests instead of big tech having to approximate them using personal data. But why would big tech willingly give up their power?

Exactly what I think. Sharing data isn't as bad as it sounds. The problem arises when such data is sold without our consent.

So... how are Solid Servers different? It's still normal servers owned and managed by a company, right?So what makes it that people can retain control over their data? Is it a contractual matter? Meaning that the server lease agreement stipulates that you "own" your data? Or there is something more funky/special going on that I'm missing?

One possible problem I stumbled upon reading the docs is... you are getting a unique WebID. And with this you are traceable over all services. Imagine Facebook and ebay would work with the solid eco system. If you grant facebook just a tiny bit of information about you, but ebay a lot more of other data. Who will stop them to combine that data? That data is linked to you WebID, so it's easy for them to combine/connect it.

The only way to truly decentralize , is to have home servers and the license (freedom) to split load balance between upload and download bandwidth freely with no restrictions. The antitrust should fine the big 4 for corrupting the ISP's all around the world. Static IP's should be free .. or should be included in the annual fees

The idea that collecting data is only for deriving value for it because the business model is broken and that some other monetization is needed... That's true, but many of these free services (e.g. Google) entirely rely on that data, so if we all stopped giving Google our data and instead paid for Google services, they wouldn't work, as the data is vital. Google needs to know who our contacts are, where we've been, where we've shopped, what sites we visited, what we eat, what we're thinking of buying, what medical ailments we're searching up etc... Laws are made by lawyers working for government, in a big revolving door of conflicts of interests. Don't expect the people to be protected any time soon.

This is a promising idea that is way less convoluted and gimmicky as the blockchain. Etheruem, Solana, gas fees, hashes, etc. I cannot see crypto overtaking fiat currency anytime soon because it's so damn complex for a non-tech savvy person to use and gas fees are atrociously high. On top of that, most of these cryptocurrencies are not as "decentralised" as you might think.

Also, am I the only one who recognizes how stupid this "recommendations based on prior history" model is? If I just bought a book on Amazon, or listened to an album on Spotify, why in god's name would I want more of the exact same thing I literally just did? Would I not want something different? A change of pace? And if I did want more, do they really think I'm too incompetent to just search for more of the same? I mean, I saw/heard/bought the thing the first time, why would I have trouble finding it the next time around? This idea that you can "guess" what an end user wants is sheer lunacy that will inevitably end in miffed consumers getting annoyed by "recommendations" of things they don't want. It's pure arrogance on developers' part, and it tries to reduce the complexity of humanity to a very flawed machine algorithm.
@Maclone2000
@Maclone2000 3 года назад
But if 1,000 people, who had exactly the same list of favourite albums as you, all went and added a particular new album to their playlist, the chances are that you will probably like that new album too. It's not simply going to recommend more of the same, but effectively crowdsourcing based on thousands of other people who have the same tastes as you. I'm afraid it's not lunacy...

What do they really mean by creating better services??? In order for that to happen means they need to know more about you in order to provide a better customise and tailor that service. That means giving up more of yourself in the gradual long term. Get rid of Facebook social media. Would like to see apple create a social media platform that’s more cohesive and meaningful.

That's a cool concept but the social networks would just make a copy of that data when you post it and keep that copy for themselves. Bottom line is if you interact with any of these networks you have to POST information about yourself which they get to keep. The only way to not do this is to stop using these sites or go through proxies and never give your real information.

All my data in one place raises some security questions. Since every hacker would be trying to target this one centralised data store. Also, I might want to give different data to different parties, such as my real email not being used to sign in to services which might send me unwanted emails. I'd be interested to get Ruben's take on the potential for this technology to somehow become decentralised.

The video doesn't have any depth to it beyond explaining the idea, making it a hollow 'explainer' without any real meat. Its basically a database that's it, that's the whole thing. How does it work legally? What - if anything - do the big social platforms say about all this? Is there any big player onboard besides the brand name 'SIR' Berners Lee?
