2022 Volkswagen Tiguan R line review by The Straight Pipes. The 22 Tiguan is putting down 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque from a 2.0L Turbo 4 cylinder. At $45,045 CAD, would you take it over the Mazda CX-5, Toyota Rav 4, Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V?

Owners of a 1.5 4cyl front wheel drive 2021 Tiguan for a year now, super happy with it. Enough power for a family car, and comfy on long road trips. The space for passengers and stuff is the best bit. Can fit two adults in the back with a child seat on, which is a massive win.

@dwizcreations

@@HungNguyen-cl2mu with now two years of ownership, we've so far not seen any issues (after buying brand new, so perhaps I've got a while before seeing any problems). However, my in-laws have had golfs (pretty much same as a Tiguan just smaller) for more than a decade and they've seen no issues either. Friends own Passat, Octavia, superb, karoq which are pretty much same platform vehicles Tiguan and have not heard of serious issues so far. A mechanic friend mentioned that high mileage VW (German) cars are a bit of a risk, but that after about 2014, the quality had gone up considerably. All that said, car problems can occur to anyone, for sometimes for the most reliable cars, and I find is down to luck. Only downside we've noticed so far is that we aren't getting amazing fuel economy, but that's probably because both wife and I have heavy feet, and the automatic gearbox doesn't help with short journeys around town, which we use it mostly for. We are usually getting about 33mpg (UK standard)

@@RubzNotNice congrats and may you have many an awesome and safe journey in it 😄 Our 3rd year of ownership and done 40k miles, still loving it daily. Learnt how to have less of a leadfood so 35mpg is easily achievable with 40+ on long road trips. R line is the way to go as it looks the part. Ours is a top spec elegance. We've so far had one mechanical issue with having to change a sensor in the mechatronix gearbox, which was done within warranty (3k bill if not). Changed first set of tires (fronts) at £240 each. Sometimes adaptive cruise thinks we're in a left hand drive country (we use A cruise a lot) and takes mph signs as kmph. Bit fun on the motorway due to that. Despite all above, still walk away from it smiling, with an occasional look back in admiration 😁

I have a 2016.5 CX-5 GT and I test drove the new Tiguan (FWD) a couple of weeks ago. It's a beautiful car and drove nicely but nothing like my CX-5. I found the steering to be too light and numb and that was deal breaker for me. On the 4motion version, you are able to customize some of the driving dynamics including steering however, they didn't have any in stock that I could test drive.
@zedzedski7382
@zedzedski7382 2 года назад
2021 R-Line owner here. Yes, you can set a steering heavier and sharper without even going into sport mode. However, for a daily driving from point A to B I prefer soft and light steering. It is still sharp if you are on 19" or 20" wheels. Now that I am on 17" wheels for the winter, yeah, it is a bit ever lighter. Also FWD vs AWD makes a huge difference in how car turns as well. So, if you get a chance to test drive a fully loaded one, I suggest you try it. I was skeptical as well. I went from Golf Sportwagen to Tiguan and I was impressed how well Tiguan drives and handles. Makes me feel that I am in a bigger Golf.

@@zedzedski7382 I understand you had a great experience but that’s the case with everyone driving a Volkswagen and rating shows that. I’m just saying compare to reliable brands like Mazda, Honda or Toyota, Volkswagen need to work bit more on good quality of vehicles
@zedzedski7382
@zedzedski7382 2 года назад
@@Jimy273 I wouldn't say Mazda is reliable. It only began to improve after 2013 but pre those years it was just as unreliable as Nissan after it got purchased by Renault in early 2000s. Also, every brand have their good and bad models. Just because one model is a total ass does not mean that the whole brand is like that. VW VR6 and the 2.5 5 cyl engines are one of the most reliable engines. Too bad that every car company is being forced to use now smaller engines with Turbo and that's where everyone starts to have problems. Look at what is happening with Toyota. RAV4 is has just become a disaster: injector problems, fuel pump malfunctions, battery setting on fire the entire car, gearbox issues (for CVT models), rolling over and the list goes on. Tiguans on the other hand had little problems here and there and nothing compared to RAV4. Honda CRV, also has a lot of problems, also fuel pump, injector problems, AC malfunctions, heating not working in cold winter. Also, Honda gave 0 fucks to address some of those issues despite a large amount of customers complaining. But if you are so concerned about VW reliability then get an extended full warranty. It will cover everything for 200 000 km. Unlike some Honda or Toyota, the VW honors warranty service and fix the issues. One of my VW had DSG problem (weird sound coming out of the gearbox). So, VW no questions asked replaced the whole transmission and while the car was in service I was provided with a loaner free of charge. Moreover, their premium warranty covers 24/7 road side assistance that you don't have to pay for. So, get a premium extended warranty and sleep tight at night and enjoy a much smoother ride with a solid build quality where nothing rattles or peels off in the interior of the car on daily basis

This Tiguan looks great inside and out. I’d consider getting one as a replacement for our Touareg TDI, but the lack of a true performance version is a deal breaker. They did tweaks for 2020, 2021 and 2022 models. So, 2018 and 2019 models are indeed slower and number on acceleration. The 2018 goes 0-100 km/h in 8.4s, while 2020 and up go in 8.0s. Also, the torque comes in earlier so that off the line start issue that was on 2018 and 2019 models is resolved on 2020 and up year models.
@ezbacc
@ezbacc 2 года назад
My wife has the 2018 as well. It definitely had a lot of weird issues. Power is so low off a stop but is decent as a cruiser and can pick up speed pretty well once you are at like 80-100 kmh. But in the city at red lights, man its sluggish! super jerky and clunky at times as well. Apparently there were some TSBs in NA for fixes on the sluggish acceleration for 2018s but good luck finding a dealer that would actually do it. I tried and no luck. Like someone said, once the 2020's came around they fixed some of these performance issues. According to Motormouth, with this new 2022 model, they refined the transmission and how the engine paired to give better gear shifts and reduce that sluggishness. Still 185hp at the end of the day.

It would be cool if they would actually add a performance version. The cosmetic changes are definitely eye catching, so throwing some extra performance in would create a really compelling package.

Similar to how Toyota used to gatekeep AWD on their Lexus sedans, seems like they are gatekeeping performance engines on their Audi SUVs.

We ended up buying a 22 Tiguan R line brand new, since the price of a 21 with a considerable amount of miles (30-40,000) cost the same amount. Around $32,000 USD it was a no brainer to buy a new one, but no sunroof for some reason on almost all new Tiguan R lines…unless you get the SEL R-line. There was an interested credit applied to the window sticker of around $1,800.

I'm curious if you put the passenger seat down as far as it goes? My son is 6'2" and he fits beautifully in the Tiguan! No hair brushing on the headliner 😂 That's one of the Tiguan's best features, is the height adjustable passenger seat!

@10:17 That's not lagging. That's motion is known as animation. You can tell because it expands into position. Anyway, it really needs a black edition across the trims. I also wish the offered option captain's chair for the second row, like on the Sorento. One reason that's my top choice ATM.

Loved the look of it however sat in it and the seats are so uncomfortable. Bought a Q5 Prestige with Bucket seats for the fiance instead and they are so much better. Ive always been an Audi guy however wanted to try to get into the VW world. Anyone else find their seats uncomfortable? Maybe ill reconsider it when its time to replace mine.

In Europe this car is sold as the Tiguan Allspace which is a considerably bigger version of the normal Tiguan. And all versions come with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, although the normal size Tiguan can be had with a PHEV drivetrain and a 6-speed dual clutch transmission.

Funny to see a visor test on this one. My wife has the 2021 SE R Line Black edition here in the US and the passenger visor doesn't go back on hers either! When I saw that, I was hoping you guys would review a Tiguan and see it for yourself. I was not disappointed haha.

Great review, thanks! My only complaints with the 2022 Tiguan are the relatively weak engine, the fact that the ambient lighting is not more extensive and reaching towards the back rows, and finally the exhaust pipes not being real! Actually I would also have preferred the white interior to pair with the Platinum Grey Metallic exterior color. Other than that, I think its a great choice in this category.

not that light on gas but i like the self parking feature. i know most people don't bother with it but if you take some time to figure out how the algorithm works it makes your life a lot easier in the city. also glad they got rid of the auto hold from previous generation. not a fan of the camera system though. they should have made it so it changes to front camera when you shift from reverse to drive... but instead the thing stays on reverse all the time unless you manually change it.

I know this isn’t something straight pipes does but I wish they could review a stage 2 Tiguan…. A normal Tiguan is NOTHING special at all, but a tuned one can hang with scatpacks, SS Camaros, SRT Grand Cherokees and it’s only like $3k in mods and they’re still basically factory reliable.
