it's a feature of solidworks called realview, if you have a gaming graphics card (eg one from the ge-force series) you will probably not have this option. Google "realhack".

Really not sure why my side of things is going wrong, at 4:15 when you are trimming the elipse and the line. I can only trim the elipse and not the horizontal line for some reason.

same for me, if you zoom in where the tubes meet the rectangular block there is a small gap where the extrude was flipped, i guess if you fill that gap the zero thickness will disappear.

edit: it's just Solidworks being buggy, keep trying it and it should eventually work, also if you cannot select the underside of the tubes to shell just "hide" the block extrude and go from there.

The square profiles are separate boss extrudes and merged with the exhaust pipe. So there are two solid bodies until "11:14" (the plate and the pipe with the square profiles extruded and mated with it). Only after that the shell is created. He doesn't explain it good. Somehow confuses you with the region selection when he extrudes the plate below the exhaust.
