SOLIDWORKS Tutorial - Reuse Drawings

In this quick SOLIDWORKS tutorial, you'll learn an easy way to reuse drawings. Replacing a model in a drawing can be done in various ways, however, many ways can cause dimensions to become dangling dimensions which can be a tedious task. A better way to reuse a drawing is to replace the part/assembly using the references function from within SOLIDWORKS. First by making a copy of an existing drawing, renaming it, and replacing the reference with another file. This will generate a much cleaner transition between files leaving little clean up if any at all, depending on the number of differences between files.

This is dark magic, surely the Solidworks gods disapprove! In all seriousness, great tip, my mind is blown. Keep up the outstanding work!!!

Sir, I'm an intern at an engineering design company, and I want to express my immense gratitude for your tutorial. My supervisor assigned me this kind of task involving 77 CAD files, and I was quite overwhelmed, wondering how to complete it by tomorrow. Then, I stumbled upon your incredibly helpful tutorial 😭.

Can this also work in instances where the reference parts are both "insert parts," coming from different configurations of a master model? The "Insert Part" feature unfortunately seems to make Solidworks forget that it's loaded 2 similar parts
@goengineer
@goengineer 2 года назад
This method will not work for virtual components (inserted Parts) by default. In order to use this method you would have to have saved those parts as external files. How well this will work does still depend to a certain extent on how those files were built and configured but it should work more or less as shown.

First, thank you so much, brilliant video!! Second, Can I do this with 2 sheets in the same drawing but with different configurations?
@goengineer
@goengineer Год назад
Yes, to a point. All of the views will be updated to the new model. You can then change the configuration showing in any specific view. How well the dims update is going to depend a lot on how the part is modeled and what is changing in the configuration.

How would one replace a part with an assembly (Re-designed a port that was one piece into multiple pieces using sheet metal application) and now I need to update the drawing.

For sections view the dimension lines showing error, its not replacing, can you show me any section model?

Edit feature, Change your Section depth to much bigger, then hit check. Then go to edit cutting line and hit ok. It seems to all work now

Thank you, anh you know how to link this drawing with part when we use OPEN DRAWING in part enviroment?
@goengineer
@goengineer 5 месяцев назад
Once this process is completed using open drawing should open the correct drawing. The "open drawing" command does not include a way to create a link that does not already exist.

Does this work with parts that have been created using master modelling?
@goengineer
@goengineer 2 года назад
Yes, this will work with master models as long as the two files are fairly similar with slight variations so that the dimensions can attach correctly.

@rishi_d8739 11 месяцев назад
If we mirror a part and then use this method to create a mirror drawing, the dimensions get dull in colour. I hope you understood this situation. It would be great to have a solution for the same. Thank you.
@goengineer
@goengineer 11 месяцев назад
This is intended functionality because the mirrored parts dimensions are all driven from the original design. There are a few different ways you can approach resolving this from breaking the link to the original to changing the color display of driven dimensions. It might be worth contacting your VAR and talking through the options to find one that suits your needs.

How far can you stretch this?
@goengineer
@goengineer 3 года назад
Drawings can be copied and have the model referenced changed to any model you wish. Even if the model is completely different. However, if the model is 100% different you will not have any data to transfer over from the original drawing.
@drewmanzara5731

@@goengineer fair enough! How does solidworks decide what to “re-attach” the dimensions to? Does it have to do with the origin somehow? I tried this trick with some handrail today and it didn’t stick, but I don’t think either assembly is built around the origin because they’re both referenced to the same larger assembly.

This only works if part (bracket) 2 also is a copy of part 1.
@monsterjesse

why am i getting dangling dim's still.
@goengineer
@goengineer 2 года назад
Jesse, it is hard to say for sure without seeing the file. Dimensions can be sensitive how the other files where built and what is and is not suppressed perhaps. if you are really struggling with the process I would suggest getting in touch with your VAR and they may be able to help get to the root of the issue.

This does not work 99% of the time. I am not sure how it worked for you. This is a big flaw in SolidWorks drawings. Very time consuming.
@jackmama79
@jackmama79 Год назад
I followed this tutorial exactly and thought it didn't work for me either, but after closing the file in frustration and reopening after a short break it was indeed looking good with only a very few dimensions dangling rather than 100% dangling. ymmv.
