Solina from the drone | Solina from the bird's eye view | Poland
▸Solina today is a flashy town that attracts holidaymakers, summer camps and school trips. Especially in the season, it resembles other well-known Polish resorts - it is full of shops, street stalls with souvenirs, cheese, mushrooms, etc.
The highlight of the trip for visitors to Solina is a walk along the dam, some will be tempted to visit its interior, others will go on a boat cruise on the reservoir. Some of the visitors do not even realize that not so long ago at the bottom of today's lake there was a lively village with a centuries-old tradition, from which today's town, and later also the lake, was named.
The first records of the village of Solina come from 1436. It was based on the Wallachian law. It was situated on both sides of the San River, converging here with Solinka, on the slopes of steep hills covered with dense forest surrounding the village. Solina owes its name most likely to salt mined since the early Middle Ages.
For centuries, life in Solno followed its unchanging, traditional rhythm. The village was inhabited by representatives of the Bieszczady people - Bojków. The buildings of Solina consisted mainly of traditional Boyko chalets, the so-called dazzles with their characteristic steep thatched roofs. There was also a manor house, an inn and an Orthodox church in the village.
From the time of the partitions of Poland, Solina belonged to the lands now known as Galicia and belonging to the Austrian Empire near its borders with Russia. It was this location of Solina near the state border that was the cause of the misery that brought the beginning of World War I to the Bieszczady areas of the 20th century.
Already in the interwar period, the growing problem of growing Ukrainian nationalism in the Bieszczady areas and the lack of ideas for its solution on the part of the authorities of the Second Polish Republic, which was supposed to lead to a complete depopulation of the Bieszczady in a few decades later, became more and more visible.
After the period of displacement, the Bieszczady areas have been partially and on a very small scale re-populated by Poles forced to settle here, brought from the vicinity of Sokal under the so-called The 1951 "land swap". In addition, people settled here to work in the forests, the service of the prisons located here and all kinds of misfits living in their hermitages. However, it was not the end of the changes, which was to completely erase the traces of the centuries-old history of Solina from the face of the earth, because in 1960 work began to create the Solina Lake.
By the end of the 1960s, the dam was completed and put into service. At the bottom of Lake Solińskie there were the villages of Solina, Zawóz, Polańczyk, Rybne, Wołkowyja, Bukowiec, Teleśnica Oszwarowa, Teleśnica Sanna ... What the war, nationalist struggles and displacement could not be destroyed were destroyed by communist engineers. Time stood still here.
The dam never reached the assumed levels of energy production, as could be expected from the communist initiators of the project. However, it must be admitted that it created a place of exceptional natural values, difficult to find anywhere else in Poland.
The lagoon is impressive with its size and surface, but the most striking is the beauty of the undulating shores of the water reservoir. Here, the water broke into former fields located on the slopes of the steep hills surrounding San, creating beautiful narrow and deep coves that are visible today. No wonder that the lake began to attract tourists.
Today, Solina is the most famous holiday resort in the Bieszczady Mountains, identified by many with these areas. You often come across vacationers visiting Solina, but who have no idea about the areas further south, not to mention the history of Bieszczady. After decades, life returned to Solina.
