Jesus regularly oscillated between rich time in community and beautiful time connecting with God in solitude in the eremos. The “quiet place” was an intentional space Jesus entered to be alone with God and himself. As apprentices of Jesus, we desperately need to set aside time for this too.
In episode 1 of the Solitude season, Bethany Allen and John Mark Comer interview John Ortberg. John Ortberg is a longtime pastor, speaker, and author, and the founder of an online ministry called Become New. He and his wife Nancy live in Northern California. Born and raised in Rockford, Illinois, John graduated from Wheaton College with a degree in psychology. He holds a Master of Divinity and a doctorate in clinical psychology from Fuller Seminary, and has done post-graduate work at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland.
This podcast accompanies the Solitude Practice, developed by Practicing the Way. Thanks to the generosity of The Circle, all our resources are free. To learn more about The Circle or to run a Practice with your church, community, or small group, visit www.practicingtheway.org/.

Right at the end... "You cannot lead people effectively unless you are free from the need of their approval." / "You cannot lead people you need something from..." This hit true. How do we position ourselves, and lead, as paid pastors?

God used the book, 'Soul keeping' so significantly in my life after a friend suggested it when I explained what I believed was doing in my life. That recommendation significantly influenced my life! God bless you John.

John, you mentioned that when you've experienced God's love that it was overwhelming. I too felt that way and had often expressed that to others. Then one day, the Lord said to me," what you have experienced of my love that you consider overwhelming is as a single drop in a limitless ocean." That thought of what it might be like to experience an actual ocean of His love was both exciting and terrifying all at the same time. On one occasion when I especially experienced His presence, there seemed to be no words to describe that experience except - Luminous Light and Liquid Love. Now that was truly overwhelming!!

That was beautiful and so compelling. Love the training vs. trying. It seems like we should train to develop the habit of surrender. Thank you to the team at PTW for this content, and thank you to John Ortberg for being so gracious to share.

So valuable. Off the "to do" checklist and, because of the descriptions, info, explanations, onto the "wow I get to do this" list. Thank you.

Wow, so love the concept of this channel. I am in the Bay Area (actually have met Ortberg) and like the "practicing" the way (Orthopraxy Fancy word for what we do) (meets orthodoxy - writings and good practice of Christianity) is the this natural way god made us to live and work. I am trying to hone where or how God wants me to be involved and lead but thank you for this work you're doing. I see that people are using (even (cheesy and bit volunerable)) the prayer section of a Christian dating app I'm on to discuss, support and encourage one another. I think I am going to work on my writing but could use prayer for discernment where I'm at (I am working towards these other big goals (a degree to support a new career in health)) and start a family and have ben a bit worn out because of a lack of fellowship and just my life stage. Anyhow again so good and keep on keeping making The Lord great as we simply get to be His light unto the world living next to my neighbor!

Trust him with your weariness and discouragement. Keep looking for someone you can be honest and vulnerable with, even if it is paid for.

Thanks, since this post some tougher experience has made me to reaching out (re-reading some cloud and Townsend on friends and healthier relationships) myself which I should've been doing. Some trusted friends have been going a bit deeper (as I've just realized I need to do so) even opening up more about all these things @@lynnrickert1
