I disagree with you about Han needing to be cynical at this point. This is 10 years before we meet him in A New Hope. Clearly, the movie is trying to help us see the core of who Han is and then see how the layers of cynicism, lack of trust, lack of hope, etc. got built up over time because of things like, you know, the person you love most in the world betraying you. I loved how they handled Han in this movie and think the writers and director understood totally the core aspects of his character. Despite his smuggling, his arrogance, his sarcasm, etc., Han is ultimately a good guy, just like Qi'ra said in the film. Solo was by no means a perfect movie, but it was a lot of fun and I think they did the subject matter justice. I was never bored and thought the relationships between the characters was really interesting. Qi'ra was a great addition and is a complex character that I would like to see more of. I am truly saddened by the box office returns on this movie and afraid it means we will never see a sequel. -- Jessica from Drawing Conclusions, the marriage of movies and art

@@rickster255 Unfortunately they are relying on the audience to have seen or be aware of the Clone Wars show. Basically he survived the fall, gets thrown in the literal trash heap, then ends up with mechanical legs. Of course we last saw him prior to Episode 3, so unless there is some book or comic that I am not aware of, we don't know what happened to him in the ~10 years before Solo.

I disagree with the grumpiness you mentioned. You have to take into account that this is a younger Han. He hasn’t really experienced anything yet to build him up to the Han he eventually grows up to be. I’m sure that’s anyone when they’re young. They’re optimistic and okay with embracing life yet as people grow older they slightly change based on what’s happened to them. Just something I’d thought I’d point out.

Gen X is the establishment for Star Wars, and they're not speaking to you cause you're not part of their club. I think it's fitting that Han is a little more idealistic and less cynical in this film - it shows that Han's good-natured soft spot for the underdogs was a character trait he always had. But... that was before the love of his life abandoned him and before he had a price on his head from Jabba. The movie doesn't really give us the whole backstory, so there's still plenty of room for his character to get to a more familiar place.
@murmor6890
@murmor6890 6 лет назад
Adding more dramatic sequences for character development would also push the problem of having to imitate Harrison Ford. SPOILER: I also feel like "the event where he shoots first" at the end of this movie is strangely ignored, that adds a hell of a darker side and loss of idealism to the character.
@adamfox9599
@adamfox9599 6 лет назад
I agree. Very rarely is a person cynical and “grumpy” straight away. In this film he’s young and a bit green. The Han Solo we know has been doing this for years by a new hope. People change and become weary of life. I know I’m a right miserable bastard now haha
@0Fyrebrand0
@0Fyrebrand0 6 лет назад
That "shooting first" thing was genius. It's like he wasn't even shooting one guy in that scene, he was shooting at the whole universe. Everything he had was crumbling apart, his closest friends/loved ones betrayed him, and he was just like "Oh yeah? Well FUCK YOU then!!" It didn't even click for me in the moment, that it was a nod to the cantina scene. I just thought it was a brilliant character scene. That realization changed him, and it's something he's carried with him ever since.

I think what even smart movie reviewers are missing is that there is a character arc with Han and he's not going to act EXACTLY like he did in Episodes 4-6. Yes, there are hints of some of it, which is a good thing, but this movie did a good job of starting to explain WHY he started losing his optimistic approach on life. He found his love of his life and she left him/tricked him at the end. And we see a definitive moment of change when he shoots first. I think there is still a lot of development between the end of this movie and when we first see him in Episode 4. I really enjoyed the movie.

I for one love the changes they made with Han and Lando's relationship. It makes the OT Han and Lando unreliable narrators, which is one of my favorite tropes in any story telling. Making the characters tell versions of the story that don't line up, like what happened with Luke and Kylo in 8, invites the viewer to get way more invested in the story as they understand it than they would have been otherwise.

This is unfortunately the problem with most big movies these days, in my opinion. They pander to a massive audience, and in doing so we miss out on a lot of originality, and great chances being taken. Sure, they can be entertaining, but they feel generic, and leave me wanting more.

A few things (SPOILERS): 1) this movie is about trust, and how Han loses his. It develops him in that sense. At the beginning of the film, he is a loyal person who - while he doesn't respect authority - respects and trusts people who are similarly rebellious. That trust erodes as the film progresses (Lando's cheating, the Enfys Nest twist, Beckett's betrayal, Qi'ra's turn) until by the end he's empty of it (except with Chewie, who's proven to be a loyal friend despite having opportunities for betrayal). 2) The nice thing about Alden Ehrenreich's performance is that he ISN'T simply imitating Harrison Ford. That's down to the character arc described above. He's definitely charming and likable, but he's also naive and vulnerable. This isn't the "shields-up" Han Solo we know from the OT and ANH, but this film does start to inform us how he got there, and Ehrenreich does a decent job of selling that progression. He's not great by any means, but I don't think it's accurate to say he's imitating Ford in any way. 3) Is it not possible that Han isn't gruff and short-tempered with colleagues because: a) he's not there yet as a character, in part because of the things described above? b) there's not any real incompetence from secondary characters on display? 4) As the culmination of all the points above, complaining that there's no arc for Solo and that nothing is done to deepen his character is contradictory to the other complaint which is that he's not the same character you loved in the OT and TFA. He's a different character because he's younger, more optimistic and more naive, and through the film he begins to lose that naivete and optimism, which brings him more in line with his later self. All of which leaves me confused: do you actually want character growth or do you want the same old Han you know from the OT? Because you can't have it both ways. For the record, I don't think this movie was particularly great (for different reasons), but the character thing - which is clearly your biggest gripe - is something they got right.

I get the trust theme, but it didn’t land well, and I’m not blaming anyone because the behind the camera issues were well televised. Him losing trust wasn’t complemented well with, for one, noticeable change in demeanor, and two, actions taken up besides that one amazing scene. The way he goes after x(avoiding spoilers) near the very very end doesn’t really exemplify a change in demeanor. The actor maintains a consistent affect through out the entire film. I think this is a script issue because a change in demeanor would force him to take up different actions at the card table, and maybe plan something else entirely away from the card table. If it was planned for him to maintain his demeanor and affect while taking up only one drastically different action then the writers may be waiting for his affect to change after the love of his life betrays him. Even then it’s a bit of a missed opportunity, because we get to see him acquire things that we know he acquires from some where, we get to see him do things that were mentioned in passing in the original trilogy, but we never get an emotional impact. The pivotal action taking scene in Solo was absolutely amazing but was sadly contrasted by what he did immediatly and a few scenes later. The writers seemed to get in their own way. It felt like Star Wars without being overly attached to the rest of the saga. It was fun, the humor wasn't too unfunny, the characters were interesting, and after watching the clone wars, there was so many things I understood that I didn't before. Everyting related to that casino sub plot was terrible, it was too familiar to our world which felt out of place in Star Wars (not to mention that it was the source most people's complaints) and other than that we didn't see anything we haven't seen before except maybe the the sacred jedi texts inside the a tree (wow what a creativite idea lol) that was destroyed before we have seen anything of it anyway. The first 30 minutes of Phantom Menace expanded the mythos more than the TFA and TLJ movies combined.

Chris, I respect a lot of your movie reviews and analysis, but most of this review I disagree with completely. I think Solo and Rogue One are two of the best films Disney has produced since buying Lucasfilm. Solo has a strong script, great acting and characters, and captures the fun energy of A New Hope. And Alden Ehrenreich delivers big time, not copying Harrison, but doing his own thing. He’s fantastic. What I loved most was Han and Chewie earning their friendship with the audience gradually, starting as enemies. That’s great writing and performance. And a huge mountain to climb after 10 films of knowing these characters. Hats off to Ron Howard for saving this film and turning it into a damn good movie.

I could handle Han being less cynical because he was young and had dreams. It's by the end of the movie you can see that what he goes through could turn him bitter. It would have been better to show the transformation but it worked for me nonetheless. Also I'm surprised by so many reviews saying this movie was lackluster. To me it felt the most authentically Star Wars since the original trilogy. Force Awakens was rinse and repeat... and dull. The Last Jedi was incredible in spots with how it took chances but it also fell down in places feeling a bit more like the prequel trilogy at times. Still a great movie but it didn't feel 100% old school. Not the best movie ever but I had fun watching Solo. It had real spark in set design, creature design and action. It surprised me given the bumpy production.
@drawingconclusions3489
@drawingconclusions3489 6 лет назад
I mostly agree with you, except that I think it would have been a bit much to see Han turn bitter by the end. We only see him for a few minutes after Beckett turns on him and a few seconds after Qi'ra flies off without him. If this movie gets any sequels, I think we will see some of that in the future. One of the best moments of the film for me was seeing Han shoot Beckett, actually, because we do see him moving more towards the Han we meet in A New Hope. I thought the movie was a ton of fun and was much better than I was expecting it to be. I really wish fans would give it a chance. -- Jessica from Drawing Conclusions, the marriage of movies and art

So, basically the main complaint is the same thing fans flagged up when this film first went into production: it doesn't need to exist. Right from the get-go people were telling Lucasfilm that no-one wanted a Han Solo movie. They went ahead anyway, encountered various problems along the way (maybe that was a sign guys) and now we have a film that most people aren't hyped about and is getting lukewarm reviews. Looks like the 'toxic fanbase' knows a thing or two after all. You should've concentrated either on a movie based around a character people want to see more of (Obi Wan, Boba Fett, Yoda maybe...characters who don't need to be recast with an inferior pretender) or come up with a completely new story with either new characters or set during a different point in the timeline.

Just done watching it. And I could say, the movie was pretty damn good. I don't get how a lot of people hate or throw shade on this film, only basing on the fact that it was the lowest grossing star wars film made so far. But I think the problem is not on the movie or even the casts, but on the marketing. It was essentially announced (or marketed) just 3 months before the premiere, and that in itself is a red flag, considering it had tough competitions like Avengers:Infinity Wars, Incredibles 2, Deadpool 2, etc. They should've started on promotions way before that timeframe, or even move the official release date later, if need be. And I hope Disney would learn form that. The movie deserves better acknowledgement. Also, I think SOME of them assumed Solo isn't worth it, as it came after TFA. I'm not saying TFA isn't a good movie as well, IT IS, but we can't deny that there are people who was disappointed for CERTAIN reasons. The casting was unexpectedly spot-on. Alden Ehrenreich as young Han Solo was surprisingly intimately tuned into the character, as he was not at all trying-hard to be Harrison Ford's Han Solo, but just doing HAN SOLO. It made the character look genuine and TRUE to its origins. I would say Alden stood up to his character very well. It goes the same with other casts.

Precisely, Star Wars is so much more than just a fun sci fi flick. So unfortunate to see Star Wars loose it’s meaning by these anthology films. It’s not a franchise defined by space ships, spectacle and fan service. The original trilogy always attempted to bring something new to cinema, to redefine or revolutionise what can be done. Something I appreciated about TLJ. With that being said i still enjoyed solo more so than rogue one, but could have been better in my opinion.
@robbi5449
@robbi5449 6 лет назад
I enjoyed Solo more than Rogue One as well. But i like Solo more than Force Awakens and Last Jedi. I dunno why I have a problem with the new trilogy, but it feels all wrong. They kill off main characters, they add new characters which arent as charismatic or relevant....all are too young to be believable heroes..Disney style, Finn, Rey, Darth whatever, Han Solos kid.....none are very interesting in my opinion. The original trilogy will always be the special one...Maybe thats why I appreciate the movies which tie into those and expand the story of the good old characters more. Maybe im against change or new things...i dunno...but this post Luke Skywalker Star Wars seems irrelevant. Why the hell didnt they make the trilogy about the Old Republic.........Republic vs Empire, thats what makes Star Wars fun for me....Not some new whatever Order or Sect of the whatever whatever dark side dark side something something dark side versus some new random kids on the block. Who cares ??? Wheres the Republic ??? Wheres Tattooine ? wheres Coruscant ? where is the jedi council ?? where are the jedi temples ? where are the sith coming from ? wheres Korriban ?? so much lore to be built upon....but nope...Disney had to """invent""" their own lore. i dont care about a modern remake of the old movies, because this new trilogy is just this.
@Ace-nh8kb
@Ace-nh8kb 6 лет назад
I see your point in regard to the new trilogy, personally I enjoy it but of course it'll never be entirely be like the OT. With TFA it felt like disney played it safe, and for good reason after the prequel trilogy. Star wars needed something familiar, something to revitalise the franchise and pave the way for future films that can later branch out and explore new territory. As for the lore and giving these films a wider perspective of the galaxy, it was a missed opportunity and was one of things I admired about the PT. However, in saying that I don't believe necessarily all the events leading from episode 6-7 should've been addressed. When A New Hope was released the audience had minimal context on what had occurred prior to it, there was a sense of imagination and mythology to it that truely emulated the magic of star wars. Sadly much of it was answered in the PT (some of it being in the worst possibly way) and cannot be undone, but with this sequel trilogy there's opportunity with that. As for the characters introduced in TFA, they are all likeable to me. Kylo ren is compelling and interesting as a villain, Poe is incredibly fun and charismatic as is Finn. Rey isn't the strongest protagonist but I think she's ok, I'd say she's on a journey of acceptance rather than on a journey of becoming a hero like Luke Skywalker. They're mostly solid despite not entirely being like the original cast, but it's the responsibility of the old characters to pass on their legacy to the new and be at the forefront. At some stage star wars needs to become something different, continually push the boundaries of what is possible otherwise the more of the same that we're currently getting is just going to get old at some point. Hence the irrelevance of skywalker's legacy/family line in TLJ, linage shouldn't necessarily dictate greatness. Rey and the broom boy at the end are testament to that, and that only invites new possibilities. Finally, The old republic was great until knights of the fallen empire stuff, but that could be a possibility with future trilogies. I don't think that the current trilogy should be based on EU lore as star wars has always been original ideas, it never derived from any source material such as books, games ect ect.
@robbi5449
@robbi5449 6 лет назад
Ace i agree with your last statement, Star Wars is based on original ideas....maybe thats why they chose to do something fresh. I dunno about the Knights of the Fallen Empire stuff...I despise MMORPGs. To me the bestKotor story is Kotor 1, Revans story....and Kreia from the Sith Lords is also quite interesting....i never played, nor wagched nor was interested in anything related to the Online The Old Republic greedfest, where the live services mattered not the stories told.

'money making machine that star wars is becoming'. *Is. Is. And always has been. Some of you young tikes may not remember the prequels on release, but make no mistake, the merchandising and making money has ALLLLLLWAAYYYS been a part of this franchise. Agreed on all points, regardless. Especially when it comes to how he was written in TFA...that's how you revisit s character after decades.

i mean, that's how lucas made his billions and basically reinvented the toy industry. he sold all rights to the original trilogy, and kept the merchandising rights, which were seen as worthless for most films at the time. 40 some years later and star wars toys are still lining the shelves. star wars has always been about selling toys. does that mean it's bad? no. it's still a cultural icon. does that mean every entry in the series is great? no, but they've never been either. anyone remember the original marvel comics, or the early EU novels?
@drpepperman2765
@drpepperman2765 6 лет назад
kamenkewl Shhhhh... don't you know, we're supposed to treat the EU as a fountain of literary excellence. /s Yeah, it's actually really interesting learning about how that first film was made and financed. While the franchise was always about making money, at least the episodic movies have heart and passion in them (whether you like them or not, it's clear that the directors poured everything they had into these films). Solo and R1 just feel like cash grabs with no heart, which is why people are starting to notice the money making side of things.
@customsongmaker
@customsongmaker 6 лет назад
That's how you revisit a character? By killing him without showing him onscreen with Luke? If you gave any Star Wars fan a hundred million dollars, and Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, & Carrie Fisher under contract, any Star Wars fan would put those 3 people in the movie. Nobody would even consider the option of not even using all 3 characters. J.J. decided that no one would ever see those 3 actors together, ever again. Only someone who hates Star Wars would do that.
@Johnny-ux7yi
@Johnny-ux7yi 6 лет назад
Well yeah. Han's tragedy at the hands of his son Ben Solo added so much more weight to the character. Yes, i would have loved Han, Leia and Luke together but that would have been nothing but ''fan service''. It's not like as if J.J hates the franchise. Jeez.

I'll see SOLO again, and I'd see a sequel or spinoff if they offer one. Disney chose to put Solo up against the Avengers. Avengers got ALL the bigger screens in my area, so there I was with 10 other people in the entire theater on opening night, the first showing of Solo. 11 people total. If it flops, it's only because of the boycott and Disney's idiocy in forcing Solo to compete with Avengers.

So it sounds like the reason I haven't been that hyped for the movie in the first place. I feel like we didn't really need a movie about a young Han Solo. Is there really that much more to explore with the character? I'd be fine if all I knew about Han was his life from Episode 4 to Episode 7. Most of my interest in it is for seeing Donald Glover play Lando. Good to hear he does the role justice at least.
@ryanpatrick1984
@ryanpatrick1984 5 лет назад
I usually agree with your viewpoints but not on this one. I went into this movie with little to no expectations because so many people panned it. I was absolutely blown away. I think it definitely showed us the beginning of the transformation into the Han we know and love in the original trilogy. The first 25 minutes of this film were so tight and perfect that I almost cried. Also with these Star Wars Story movies I don't think that all of them are going to give us this grand insight into the universe or the origin of the characters. I think some of them (like SOLO) are just fun Star Wars stories for us to all enjoy and see cool shit happen in the Star Wars universe that we all love. I know you're a critic and that's your job to dissect films and I greatly admire your work and am a fan of yours. However I think a film like this was created to just simply enjoy and not be picked apart. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy this movie as much as I did.

They should just stop making Star Wars movies. I am not saying that because I hate what Disney is doing, but more because the fanbase is toxic. I agree that the Last Jedi has a useless side plot, but there are so many great Star Wars themes in it and I love the fact they tried something new. TLJ let characters evolve with age and experience. Unfortunately, a vocal part of the fanbase likes to ruin shit. For example, TLJ takes chances, the fanbase complains because they changed shit. Solo takes zero chances, the fanbase complains because it is not trying anything new. You cannot win with this fanbase, because it has to be the movie they thought of in their head, the exact way they thought it because it "belongs" to them. Lucas was the smart one, he quit while he was ahead.
