My personal opinion is that the movie should have had a bad end for Solo. Meaning he should have had a reverse hero's journey. Maybe make him more adventurous and good but then make it so that all the betrayals and what not made him be fed up with everything and have him care for only himself. For example make it so that at the end of everything he steals the crystal things instead of giving it to the Rebels like he originally wanted to before he got stab in the back, hell make it so the Rebels tried to pull a fast one on him as well. That way he has a sour taste for both the Empire and the Rebels.
That actually sounds way better, and at least somewhat interesting. I'd still rather not have a Solo origin, but that at least doesn't undermine his original character

In spite of my appreciation of AVGN, I seriously doubt he is to be credited for that reference. Any Star Wars fan on the more dedicated side (not 100% hardcore but one who read at least several books for instance and could outline you the history of the galaxy when woken in the middle of a night) would be familiar with the term and what it signifies, even if they never played the game, they would still sea merchandising.
It is as much bad as TLJ was bad.. so by hater logic because prequels were supposedly good, as about that is this whole butthurt. No. Prequels were a shit (with exception of decent RotS and Clone Wars) as much as New Canon isn't bad. Yes, many people deal with nostalgia, but that it all about it.
Ryan is spot on about how Han's character arch in the original trilogy is undermined by this movie! His girlfriend even says to him "You're the good guy" in Solo... smh
Subliminal Lime I don't get how that undermines him. We see him become a grey character throughout the film and that line is just a foreshadowing that deep down he's a good guy. It's not until the Death Star scene that he finally comes back to that though. Hell the film ended on him killing his mentor.

To be honest, I don't remember as a kid ever thinking Solo was a selfish ruffian. Not once did I doubt he was going to help. I think when Qira says: "you're acting all tough but I know the real you", she's describing the very nature of the character. During the OT Han always acted like "oh I don't care", but everytime he had to make a decision he chose the good one. He even went out in the cold to rescue Luke when no one wanted to. Do you really think a selfish murderer would do that? He was just a good guy surviving in a bad enviroment.
Haven't seen this movie, but The Force Awakens & The Last Jedi undermine the original trilogy by making any of the events in those films irrelevant. These new films provide ZERO story progression and are blatant retread remakes of the originals.
I went into the film with low expectations and came out actually really liking it, despite some of the flaws. The actor who played Han didn't wow me at all, but luckily the film wasn't designed to succeed on that portrayal. It's really more a heist film in the Star Wars universe, however one might feel about that.

Ok, if I remember correctly, the kessel run was a smuggling route. It was a the quickest way through the system but it was frequently patrolled by imperial patrols. There was a large dead star or something at the center of the system and the imperial patrols wouldn't go too close to it so the closer you could get to it the safer you were, but you had to have a really fast ship to cross the grav-well. That's how it was originally extended canon until Disney nuked it. I could be wrong, but it's a much better explanation than this movie.
Because of the reshoots, they couldn't put together an advertising campaign until the Super Bowl a few months ago. There were some of the usual tie-in deals and toys, but they were nowhere near the major blitz Force Awakens and Last Jedi had.
22:45 Teras Kasi is actually just a hand to hand fighting style, mostly used by non force sensitives, to give them a fighting chance against force sensitives. Though Maul is familiar with the form himself.
Two things: 1. The Kessel Run was explained in the Expanded Universe. The Maw is also a thing, but it's not the exact same thing. 2. There was going to be a new Rambo movie called "Last Blood", and then it got turned into a TV show with, and later without Stallone. I don't think they're even doing that anymore.
I understand everyone's issues with the movie, but I enjoyed it a lot. The music, laughs, and characters were fun. Way better than The Last Jedi in my opinion.
There is a young harrison ford. His name is Anthony Ingruber. He's had Han Solo impression videos on youtube way back around the early AVGN days. He's actor now and has even been in a movie with Harrison Ford as his younger self.
Right, so speaking as someone who has absolutely no interest in seeing this, and has never seen Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, or Rogue One, let me just ask one question... Considering how much this movie has bombed and the sheer indifference coming from many reviewers, how would people rank this, compared to The Phantom Menace? The reason I ask is because my mother has a very strong hatred for The Phantom Menace, to the point where I joke about it (I actually think Attack Of The Clones is worse), and I'm just waiting for her to see this and then go "Aww shit, my son's right..."
The movie was OK. Phantom Menace and Clone Wars are simply in their own tier of "bad" as far as I'm concerned, and no movie in the series even compares. Despite what everyone says about the trilogies, I still think ROTS is one of the best. TFA and RO were still better than this movie though.
The Last Jedi, and this film for that matter, are both worse than the Phantom Menace IMO. The Force Awakens was a great start to these new movies and it's a shame the direction things have gone since.
The best, most in-depth Star Wars TV show was The Clone Wars. It built heavily upon the mythos. The show gave Anakin more depth than what we got in the prequel trilogy.

When they go to get the unrefined fuel from Kessel, is it the spice? Kessel is famous for spice mines, therefore surely the spice makes the hyperspace fuel. If so, isn't that actionably close to Dune and the spice melange for folding space?

This was slightly more okay than Force Awakens, but less okay than Rogue One. Rogue One was fucking great. Better than Last Jedi. Gareth Edwards has been the best director of the new films so far. It's the only one where they honour the Japanese origin of Star Wars
I mean I was born late ‘99 so the closest I got was Revenge of the Sith and the Clone Wars show... I like those but the original trilogy is way better.
This critique was not so good. Solo is a fantastic film. These 4 reviewers didn't seem to address theme. All the elements they bring up (the dark/flat atmosphere, the use of Darth Maul, the line "I have a good feeling about this!") could have been tied nicely together if they had only discussed theme. And the theme of Solo is a refreshing change from all the other Star Wars movies. Han Solo is an unsuspecting optimist. Luke was a fatalist (what a bummer Luke was in The Last Jedi - very depressing). Han also brings us more pathos than Luke. Han tries to do good because he can see alternate solutions. Han is the ultimate troubleshooter. Han's thinking is in overdrive whereas Luke has a singular, narrow vision. And, at every turn, Han's friends disappoint him (even his own son betrays him). That makes what he does in A New Hope so refreshing too - despite what his friends have done to him in this film, Han comes back to knock Vader out so that Luke can destroy the Death Star. Han doesn't know about Darth Maul in Solo either. This dramatic irony serves the film superbly. I absolutely loved it. Disney may have hit on a franchise within a franchise with this film. Lots more stories to tell here. Han Solo is the best character because he is so rich, so deep, so complex, and so optimistic.
Star Wars fans are the worst. You all killed George Lucas for the prequels to the point that he wanted out of it. Now you're all upset with the new trilogy. Maybe Star Wars isn't for you anymore.

I actually liked the prequels and when they came out, I was young but I don't remember most people bashing it. Actually I remember in theatres in Revenge of the Sith many going nuts like when Palps fought Yoda in Senate. The noise came later with social media. I wasn't hardcore fan but enjoyed the movies then became a fan after Clone Wars animated.

The number 1 cardinal rule for making a new Star Wars movie should be: Do NOT explain or reveal ANYTHING that fans have enjoyed theorizing over, just create more mysteries and questions. It's the mystique of the star wars universe that makes it compelling. "It's the ship that made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs"... Whats a parsec? How long is the Kessel run? All we know is that it's meant to be an impressive feat and that Solo is a badass pilot but we love theorizing and that mystery of 'what are the rules of this universe' is a big part of what makes Star Wars exciting because your imagination does the work.
Im pretty sure the emperor crushes that at the end of the show. Its left on this cliffhanger where the emperor is keeping him alive for something. By the time we see him in rebels hes by himself all old and broken. Im interested to see what happened in between but if its just him making another crime syndicate than thats kind of boring.

I wholeheartedly agree about the *REBELS* cartoon. Not counting the former Expanded Universe, that show has kept me an SW fan regardless of the prequels or post-Lucas films.
It's a fun movie, very enjoyable. Seems most people that don't like it are just too caught up in the fact that it isn't Harrison Ford. It's like watching a modern Bond movie and complaining that whoever is playing Bond isn't Sean Connery.
I think the problem is that it's supposed to be a continuous universe whereas different Bonds are in different universes (at least I think so, I don't know much about Bond movies). However, I for one did buy the actor as being Han.
Parsec is fine as a measure of perceived time. What they are saying is that the fact you can do the run in under 12 parsecs increases your odds of survival. They are thinking distance/safety rather than speed/time.
