To be fair, the whole "beginning, middle, end" thing is rooted in concepts about story structure that, while very effective, are also very overused. It's not straying from that formula that's bad, the problem when people stray from that formula is that most writers and directors can't pull it off.
I agree. The score was definitely mixed too quiet. If you listen to the full score you can clearly hear the 89 batman theme and the 79 superman theme but in the movie you could easily miss them.
What are the names of the two scores? Now I'm quite interested, cause I really like those old scores and I really liked the idea of doing a homage, but if the homage is too subtle, then why bother. As Mike said, the music is part of the excitement fx in The Dark Knight Rises, when Batman returns from retirement.
I agree, I saw them credited at the end and was wondering where the hell they were played. Enjoyed the movie overall but did miss JunkieXL just a little.
Logan is the only comic book movie this year that took me on an absolute emotional rollercoaster and made me leave the theater feeling like I had been kicked in the nuts.
Have to agree, and I wasn't excited for Logan as not a big X-Men fan for whatever reason. But, *so* glad some Friends convinced me to see 'Logan' as it was just a great film, period. Really, really well done.
Suicide squad was mostly loved by the newer die hard harley fan wannabes... you know the types who claim to love a character but know nothing at all about them but just think their look is cool who all seemed to love it... but anyone that actually read the comics or knew the characters just kinda thought it was a mediocre and messy movie, the soundtrack was weird for its choices like they said to themselves "what old favourites can we use the rights for" the main villain wasn't the joker like the trailers made out and was just overall weak and it ends with the villain basically standing over a sword and letting a mere mortal flick it up and stab her....... despite being fairly intelligent otherwise in the movie, when I end up leaving a film saying "will smith was probably the best of the cast" when I can't stand will smiths acting you know something is off xD
Jax Dagger I thought it was pretty funny occasionally but being that I’m a teenager that’s probably to be expected. Don’t get me wrong the dc movies need to step up and this movie being decent is what I need to keep from having a damn panic attack
I don't read the comics, and barely know the characters, but the film was bad on its own regardless. It literally had no character arc which made it feel long but unsatisfactory.
What i don't like is the current trend to find what fans like about a marvel movie yet find what they hated about dc movies like the dc movies are always needed to be defended. Avengers was hailed as being an incredible team up movie but avengers is just as generic of a plot, one main villain and an army of nameless drones but justice league is criticized and needs to prove itself because of the previous lackluster films
TheReviewSpot avengers was an ensemble character movie. Plot is secondary to these characters (and by extension he audience) getting to know/like each other, and then follow it up with well-shot/edited action scenes. RJL’s action scenes are frenetic, visual noise with little coherencey and poor shot-to-shot editing. Only thing left to compare is the character interactions, and while not as memorable and organic as avengers overall, JL did have moments that totally worked. I do disapprove of double standards as well, but there’s a difference between that and looking at two things attempting the same thing and seeing which of them do it better. Also I have NEVER seen a review for the avengers praising its complex plotting...
Nikolas Mokalis: Sorry dude but guy had a great point so stop giving the leverage to Marvel. This is coming from a fan that has witnessed the MCU go to shit since Phase 2. You can't praise one movie and then slam the other for the same thing that's not how it works. If one is problem then the same could be said for the other.
your bae love the avgn content thought I'd weigh in on my opinions, just seems like critics want to hate the dc stuff and marvel films can't do wrong i liked bvs and suicide squad were they perfect no but neither was age of ultron, doctor strange and iron man 3 but the trend now is a marvel movie Comes out it makes crazy money and people glaze over issues with them a dc film comes out and we gotta get the villagers with torches ready to run the movie down
Dark Knight isn't part of the DCU (or the old Superman movies) just like Logan isn't part of the MCU (or the F4 you mentioned), so you can't use them in a discussion defending what DC is doing at the moment with their cinematic universe.
i hate how Warner thought of catching up with Marvel in fear of being left behind by movie fans. They ruined both Batman Vs Superman and Death of Superman just to do a step back in the next movie... what a shame. i hope it's all rising up from here on out, especially with the Batman movie.
It's like looking up to an "artist" that's famous for making turds on canvases. Have some dignity DC and aim higher than copying Marvel's shitfest. But all that counts in the end is the all mighty dollar.
Justice league made supermans death meaningless, but it's not like we didn't see it coming. Killing superman in BvS was the dumbest thing they could have done. In the words of the legendary nerd, "what were they thinking!!".
I hate that portrayal of Joker and don't understan the creative/direction choice. I *honnestly* prefer Mike and that's just HILARIOUS to think, considering he was just spoofing Cesar Romero's 1960s version :P
Holy FUCKhole, Batman! - I didn't correct or edit my comment for spelling/grammar because I wanted to point out: WAY TO GO *RU-vid* for making me look like a TOTAL ILLITERATE BAFOON!... *LMFAOO -_-*
To be honest, i liked the extended version of BvS more than Justice League. At least BvS did not feel like a comic. But Justice League with the whole sequence in that abandoned city with the flies thingies and that super weak vilain, totally killed the movie for me. Also the cgi was really bad, whereas in BvS you didn't need to rely that much on it except that zod-abomination, but it was just one character so it still looked somehow believeable. I also really liked how in BvS they built up to the climax between B and S and the way Wonder Woman was integrated in that movie.
Both the comic book character and band were named after the novel Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse. The band came last of the three, but the widespread cultural influence of "Born to be Wild" stomps all over both its eponymous predecessors.
"This movie reminded me of one of those animated features." That's all I needed to hear. They were pretty much trying to go DCAU, but Live Action with these ones. Mixing in a bit of Golden age and New Earth stuff too.
I loved this movie, it was better than Suicide Squad, loved Batman and Wonder Woman's chemistry, the music by Danny Elfman is excellent, and the action is pulse pounding.
This movie is much better than people give it credit for. Not perfect by any means, but it's enjoyable for comic fans and non comic fans alike. What's dragging down the DCEU is terrible decisions made by the higher ups at Warner Bros. The script writing is inconsistent, the directing is somewhat non existent (aside from Wonder Woman), but worst of all It's the executive decision they make in how the movies are made and released.
This right here. WB are the ones who keep cutting out important scenes and ruining the pacing so it can be under that 2 hour mark. And I believe they had a hand in revamping the overall story and tone with Suicide Squad.
Cyborg is Victor Stone, who was in the original NEW Teen Titans in the 1980's and 1990's. He was attacked by an creature from another dimention and most of his body was destroyed. His dad, a scientist developed a cyborg unit to attach to Vic to save his life. So, for most of his young life, he resented his dad for making him a freak.
I think Henry Cavill looks the part and could be a great Superman, but he is given nothing to work with. Every time I sit through one of these new DC Superman movies I just feel like I want to watch the Christopher Reeve movies again.
Both the original Batman (Danny Elfman) and Superman (John Williams) themes were in this movie in very subtle bits. It was still pretty cool to recognize them! At the end of the credits where they show the music used, you'll see both songs.
lel Not saying it was entirely bad, I mean I give full respect to Michael Keaton in anything he's in - he was after all the best *Batman* onscreen imo. But the lame teen/political satire just made me want to hate so many of the characters. Not Spidey necessarily.
I would like to see a squeal to Batman Returns with Michael Keaton back. Maybe Bruce Wayne finds someone younger to take over for him in it like in Batman Beyond.
My main beef with these live action DC movies is that they follow already great animated DC movies that are direct-to-video types. Batman v Superman < The Dark Knight Returns Justice League < Justice League: War Suicide Squad < Batman: Assault on Arkham The Wonder Woman movie carried itself, but the other movies were better done in their animated forms in my opinion.
The superhero lineup in this movie makes me lol every time I see it. It looks like they just grabbed whatever costume they had on set and said "fuck it, lets use this guy." I might be wrong but shouldn't Martian Manhunter be there instead of Cyborg?
BigK13372 Yes. But Cyborg has been around for a while although he normally doesn't stay in JL and goes with the Teen Titans. I do wish they had Jonn Jonzz instead but it would have been a different plot and I think they want to push Darkseid sooner rather than later.
dregothic I know, but the point was that when it comes to founders its usually Supes, Bats, Wondy, Flash, Lantern, Aquaman and J’onn, and because of the Nu 52 reboot Cyborg took J’onn founding status.
George eating a toilet! I literally spat my morning coffee out my nose with laughter at that comment, thinking back to playing rampage in the arcade lol. 🤣
"It felt like one movie" James Rolfe That's one for the posters. I saw the movie today and thought it was okay. At least they got Superman right for once.
The Flash is faster. It’s not really debatable. He travels so fast he can time travel. Also, in the original Doomsday comic Superman dies. That’s why he dies in Batman Vs Superman.
The problem is that in the Death of Superman comic it was just Superman vs Doomsday in a 1-on-1 battle, but in the movie it was changed to a 3-on-1 battle with Batman and Wonder Woman helping him, so there is no way Superman should have died.
The argument between Superman and the Flash's "top speed" has legitimately never been settled, and Superman did not technically die, as I'm sure you know, but people like you will continue to mindlessly reinforce the notion that he somehow came back to life after his supposed "death". It is a FACT that he went into a healing coma shortly after the battle, evidenced by his subdued, but present, biological activity.
Ty Palmer Nope, not wrong. He dies fighting Doomsday and comes back. That’s why they tried to recreate it in the movie. And the Flash is exponentially faster. He’s traveled 13 trillion times faster than the speed of light to save a town from a nuclear explosion. It’s not a debate.
Spider-Man Homecoming SUCKED ASS! Logan was amazing! Wonder Woman was actually quite alright. The rest I have no interest in seeing. Thor is a bland character played by a uncharismatic sports jog on steroids and I didn't care for GotG so why watch GotG 2.
PixelJustice20XX I am sick of comic book movies with huge potential that doesn't dare to be more than mediocre. MCU is the pure definition of mediocre and it baffles me why people can praise them for being bland. Let's just be happy we got Logan in a year filled with horribly mediocre CB-movies.
The reason the past DCU movies were dark were a set up for Justice League. Steppenwolf could only come back when Earth was at it's darkest moment, also everyone was mourning Superman and crime was rising. It was a curse that was layed in the end of the war scene by Steppenwolf.
I think if they wanted to make the most audience friendly story they could've just lifted the story "Justice," I don't remember who wrote it, but it was illustrated by Alex Ross. It's done in that style where all the visuals are painted and photo-realistic. Basically, it's a screen play already completed. Another one that's like that is "Kingdom Come," shit that would be a great story.
My thoughts: 1. About the whole DCEU: They should've done a Batman movie before BvS to show what Batman's going through at that moment, like showing Robin's death and Batman fighting with a villain (not necessarily the Joker) that at the end makes him change his perspective about everything. That way by this time the rest of the DCEU would feel more complete and not like a bunch of sub-plot and character development in the middle of the movie. 2.If you're going to kill Superman, don't make him come back exactly when a powerful villain shows up. I thought that Superman would come back for the 2nd Justice League movie to fight specifically with Darkseid. It'd have been cool if the rest of the team defeated Steppenwolf by themselves and not depending on Superman. 3.Another reason to keep Superman death: The threat was over as soon as Superman showed up. 4.This movie needed a scene where they were defeated or where they fight with each other so they'd have to learn how to work as a team. I know it sounds cliche and that it was kind of the plot for the Avengers and GotG movies, but they just started to fight together with no problem at all and that's kind of dumb. 5.I know that the Flash use to be like this guy who says funny stuff from time to time, but the Flash from the movie was a running joke (see what I... never mind). He was so childish, which like Mike said was funny at the beginning and then it was like "please stop". I don't know how the DC live-action movies can't nail something that DC animated movies can. I guess that their rush to make movies in order to not be left behind Marvel is their main problem. If you're going to make a "team" movie before the stand alone movies, make it awesome so I'll be interested with going to watch the next ones.
Speaking of the music coming in at just the right time, in Godzilla vs. Destroyah, the classic Godzilla music didn't play until near the very end when Godzilla was walking up to challenge Destroyah and it was really awesome.
No way man, the White Stripes rule! Let's just shove 15 seconds of one of their songs into a scene where it makes no sense and then have it awkwardly cut out. That's how you do a film score, right?
What do you guys think about Danny Elfman doing the music? That was a surprise to me. I like his work, but I really missed the Hans Zimmer Batman score from BvS. Also the John Williams Superman score is in the movie, briefly, its in the credits.
I watched the 3D version today and I was impressed by the 3D quality, I wasn't expecting to be a great 3D movie since it was probably shot in 2D but the visuals in 3D were great, what surprises me the most is that 3D isn't dead yet.
Pitt Meatboy with how bad the DCEU was going, that's fine with me. A solid 8 at the very least was what I was looking for in this movie. Gonna see it when I get the chance.
Highball I have found that most comic book fans like most DC movies. Problem is that the majority of the viewing public are not comic book readers which is why Marvels formula works better than DC overall. The biggest problem I have is when people don't understand a plot point or part mainly because they don't read the comics. Sure it's better to lay it out but I like that DC tends to make their movies more for the fans of comics rather than pander to the non fans. It would be like if Deadpool decided to follow the Marvel formula. It would have flopped hard.
dregothic I get it... but I think it's unfair to the people who actually spent years supporting the comic book industry, should take a back seat when it comes to what the majority wants. I feel that the Current DCEU are love letters to the people who actually made comic book movies popular.
Highball Oh I agree. That's why I actually liked BvS where most didn't. It had so many hidden elements that only deep down fans would get. I instantly knew what Batmans dream was. Hell it even is a reference to a JLU story line where Darkseid takes control of Superman to conquer Earth.
I agree with these guys that this movie jumped in trying to catch up with Marvel. I think all of them have solo movies announced. Aquaman is supposed to come out at the end of 2018, Flashpoint isn't coming out until 2020 I think (because Ezra is busy with those Fantastic Beasts movies), and the new Batman is supposed to be coming too. I'm not sure about the Cyborg movie, but I'm sure that's in the works too.
... When people always say "BvS was a mess" - they NEVER EVER elaborate on it... wonder why, perhaps they are merely sheep following a complaint that has never been elaborated on?
No, it's because people don't have a 5000 word sheet ready whenever someone on the internet wants it explained why BvS is a disaster (and it is). JL is also a disaster, but it's a different kind of disaster. BvS makes no narrative sense among other things, while JL was obviously hacked to death by the studio.
Lex massive convoluted plan which was incredibly elaborate for no reason except to extend screen time. Then there's the incredibly lame resolution to the Batman superman fight. The shoe horned Lois who was just a damsel in distress. The unnecessary death of superman which (like the death of his dad) was very badly written - why didn't wonder woman take the spear? Or Batman? Why is the only person who is weak to kryptonite using it? Then there's the fact that superman is mad at Batman for no valid reason, he's the dumbest reporter of all time. Surely a supposedly brilliant hard hitting reporter would know that Batman protects Gotham but this guy doesn't even know who Bruce Wayne is... Honestly I could keep going and going. BvS can summed up as follows - style over substance. It does look great but it reads, feels and plays terrible
For no reason? His reason was he wanted to prove Clark to be flawed, to kill Batman - or for Batman to kill Superman, thus removing him as a "God" - If God is all powerful he cannot be all good, and if he is all good he cannot be all powerful. Simple. Lame resolution? Sorry, was a Superhero movie touching on the subject of PTSD and triggerwords lame? lol, cos "IM WIT YA TILL END OF LINE BUCK" isn't a lame resolution? hah. Shoe horned? Sorry, but Lois whilst being a damsel in distress at times, was far more than that too - and you find most love interests of superheroes end up in that cliché. Unnecessary death? It was there to unite the world behind Superman, to prove the doubters than he is infact good. Not unnecessary, although I do wish it was a bit more 1v1 with him and Doomsday. Wonder Woman didn't take the spear because she was the one holding him in place with the lasso ???? Batman didn't because he would get obliterated before he got close? It was well written because it shows that Superman is brave, even when weak - "You're not brave, men are brave" a line said earlier in the film - a good film will call back on things like this, and go completely over simpletons heads it seems. LOL Superman's mad at Batman for no reason? Maybe the fact hes going around branding people and causing havoc? That families are "suffering" because of it, that HE IS TRYING TO KILL SUPERMAN??? I guess you'd not hate someone who was trying to kill you? - I believe I just refuted every point you made.
gamesandstuffs you seem to think im some sort of marvel fanboy with your cap jibe. I'm not. The two movies aren't comparable anyway. I think I'm starting to see why Snyder fans defend this film so vehemently, they're defending Snyder not the film. I totally understand what Snyder was trying to say with his hamfisted attempts at religious symbolism and I actually agree with his point but it's poorly (and obviously) executed. The set up for the final sacrifice was really poor and I'll take you at what you said about Batman and wonder woman being unavailable as that's a fairly valid point but how about this.... Why didn't superman throw it? His sacrifice (the way it was written) was unnecessary they made the same mistake with Clark's dad in man of steel. The decision to sacrifice superman wasn't wrong but the way it was executed was not strong enough to warrant it. Superman could have thrown that spear (it is a spear afterall) at the incapacitated doomsday (thanks diana!) and not needed the sacrifice. In order for the impact of the sacrifice to really hit home and work it needed to be the ONLY option. Snyder and goyer can't seem to grasp this when they write sacrificial scenes which is why it's weaker than it should be.
Just saw Justice League! The movie was pretty good, they got all the heroes right. The film had heart and humor and was entertaining. My only criticism is that Steppenwolf was not a very good villain. But I’d rather the film get the heroes right than the villain.
