Incredible beginning of a fantastic adventure. Great impressions of your first day, the scenery out there looks wonderful! Nice editing too. Happy trails, Mario
Thanks for posting these videos, I plan to spend time in the area this coming summer and your videos have inspired me to make the Emigrant Wilderness a must. May you have a blessed 2023 with lots of hiking a good times.
@@Jotipalo That was a loop from Crabtree TH to Rosasco Lake -- Cherry Creek -- Huckleberry Lake -- Letora Lake -- Cow Meadow Lake -- Wood Lake -- Grouse Lake -- Crabtree TH.
Well we did it! After getting lost a bit, recalculated with map/compass/gps and found Rosasco Lake where we spent the night and next day. Then we took off for Hyatt. Again, thanks to map/compass/gps, we found the lake. Very easy to get lost back here. Also, the hike was very strenuous, especially for two 73 year old guys who've been backpacking since our 20's. Hyatt Lake was beautiful, but the trek in was rough. Did not want to do more climbing/route finding to Big and Yellowhammer Lake. I've gotta say I'm very impressed with your fitness level and backcountry hiking sense!
I'm so glad that you had a good time! There is definitely a lot of route finding and I found the trek to Hyatt definitely harder than getting to Big lake!
We blew the route from Hyatt to Big Lake, whatever it is, so got tangled in a lot of circuitous scrambling before we got there, and then, Big Lake was totally unimpressive. Yellowhammer, on the other hand, is choice.
I remember playing wiffle ball on that beach as a kid in 1989 while on a backpacking trip with my family. Went back with a buddy in 2017 and stayed a couple nights in that same campsite. Have some really great memories at Hyatt Lake.
Love the Emigrant. Hyatt (and Big Lake) are on my list. Found the music to be distracting, but otherwise a great vid. And kudos to you for going solo! Much respect. PS: Happy to be your ninth sub.
Thanks for this. Rosasco is a favorite. And that white sand beach at Hyatt -- a Sierra rarity -- and that keeper campsite. The vast cirque you worked your way across toward Hyatt is called Slick Rock Basin. Another route into Hyatt follows Pingree's outlet creek down to it -- more expedient, and also fun, but less spectacular. I enjoyed seeing the route you took out of there, over into Louse Canyon, which we discussed but never did. I think what you're calling "Lily Lake" is actually Grouse Lake. That whole southern third of the Emigrant is amazing, almost entirely trail-less, ultra-dramatic challenging open granite topography -- and a half dozen keeper destinations -- Yellowhammer Lake, Lord "Meadow," and the lakes south of it over the Yosemite border (Boundary, Little Bear), Red Can and Leighton in the north.
I did not know it was called Slick Rock bit that definitely makes sense! I love that wide open granite! Yellowhammer is another good one for sure! I'll have to try your secondary route to Hyatt next time! Louse Canyon was gorgeous but a bit of a climb down. Totally worth it though!
The first time we were at Hyatt -- just in and out with a layover -- late in the afternoon we saw a group of day hikers come over the ridge from Louse Canyon toward the far end of Hyatt (and then return the same way) -- maybe the terrain on the far side is easier there? If you're prepared for longer ventures and some really challenging terrain, check out the lakes around Haystack -- Lower Twin (the outlet end especially), Lower Peninsula, Bear, Big Island ... And thanks again for the video. Happy trails -- and off-trails! @@travelspot06
Following Pingree outlet down to Hyatt, pick it up where the route south (on the topo) from the open granite between Rosasco and Pingree crosses it. Stay on the left bank and up enough above the creek to stay out of the tangles and, especially, stay out of the half mile of willow thickets right above the lake. It's a much easier route than via Slick Rock Basin, and you can always look at it on the way out (or onward). @@travelspot06

Hi! I am so sorry about the delay; I was actually off on a bikepacking trip! I am not in the Sierra at the moment but will be back and can keep you in mind when I decide to do some more hiking in the area.
