The Devonshire farmers would travel to Pwll Du beach on the Gower to collect limestone from its quarry! They would use ballast to cross the River Severn, deliberately sink their boats on the beach, throw out the ballast, and refill with limestone. Put the plug back in the boat, float , and return to North Devon. I’d love you to investigate the whole story. Pwll Du Remembered, by Heather Holt should assist? 😊
Winston reminds me of my dear departed border collie, who would never go very far away from me and checked on me to ensure I was always safe ♥ I think the weather made the whole experience far more atmospheric and makes you think how hard they must have worked with manual tools. You do remind me of me - cannot see an open door or open cave and not explore! (even if does require brave pants lol)
Yep, I couldn't lose Winston even if I tried to 😅 I sometime go into my own little world when walking and forget that I've even got him with me 😅 I'm such a nosey person; I always want to take a peek inside. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
The wet and mist added to the dramatic landscape. Interesting place, Winston appeared (as always) to enjoy himself and well done you for donning your brave pants 🩲😂. Can’t wait for the next episode 🐾
It is good to see all the weather elements, not always sunny blue skies and warm days . We think very atmospheric like the moors on foggy days. However as usual we've been watching this brilliant video from comfy armchairs in the warm. And as usual absolutely brilliant, thoroughly enjoyed going again with you and Winston. Try wrapping wet socks around hot water bottle over night.Thank you thank you❤
If Winston and I only went out on sunny days, we'd hardly get to go out at all 😂 Great tip about the socks!! Thank you. I'll remember that for next time. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I like these explorations of old industrial sites. It’s more interesting than plain landscapes. I’m so glad you finally got a good view and you definitely are getting braver about going inside those caves and tunnels.
I find these old sites interesting, too, especially because I can wander around them on my own, not knowing what I will find. It's the brave pants!! 😂 Thanks for watching and commenting.
That was a great adventure. The limestone workers having to toil through far worse weather than even you and Winston bravely endured. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Roz How are u dear 💖 I knew u from insta . I watch ur video after 3-4 years and now I’m a mummy two sweet boys ( 2 year and 7 months. I couldn’t find time for reading 😂. I love ❤️ ur videos
Hello. Thanks so much for sticking around, and congratulations on becoming a mum! I bet you have your hands full 😅 I'm still reading, but just not creating reviews anymore, but I still love my books. All the best to your and your family.
@@Roz.S let's all pretend we're all younger than we are and keep sharing these exciting capers. It all makes a great escapism from a sometimes depressing state of the world. Keeps us all cheerful and tuned in.
I just learned a new word "wellies". In the US, they have a different name though the benefit is they keep your socks dry. Does Roz own any wellies?@@Roz.S
@@jeffrey5961 I do have wellies but there are not suitable for walking long distances and they would also be no good when walking over wet and slippy rocks; they provide no grip or support and are a twisted/broken ankle waiting to happen. Plus, my podiatrist would tell me off 😂😂
What a lovely fantastic video...although I think you are brave going out in the inclement weather...but as you say the freedom and fresh air are worth it...David Gilmour..
If we only went out in good weather we'd never go out at all 😂 And it's not as bad as what it looks like in the video. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Some amazing scenery here plus incredible industrial archaeology! As you commented it would have been a far been experience had it not been for the rain and low cloud. Looks stunning nonetheless. Good to see Winston enjoying himself too. Stay safe. Sid and Nicola, Rugby
I think the fact it was raining (so wet underfoot) and you have the routine of hosing mud off Winston, prevented any problems with possible quicklime. As you don't always remember to take your gloves you could do what my mum used to do with us as kids and thread fine knicker elastic though your jacket sleeves with the gloves sewn on (or use hook and loop to attach to the elastic)! Do you let someone know where you are going to before you leave the campsite? Just looking at those slippy rocks and grass gives me a shudder.(Sorry I'm of an age where things like that go through my head).Great views(eventually, thanks weather).Stay safe and see you on the next one.
I am terrible for leaving my gloves back at the pod 😅 I'm also terrible at losing gloves so your idea might not be a bad shout 👍🏼 At this time of year, there's nobody to tell where I going; I'm the only person on the campsite 😅 The grass and rocks do look steeper and more dramatic on the video. In real life, it's nothing more than a large mound. I do carry a first aid kit (a human one and a dog one) and an emergency blanket. My phone had the location app 'what3words' and I've also configured the SOS settings and carry a powerbank to charge my phone if needed. 👍🏼 Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Thanks for another really interesting vlog. The weather made the scenery more dramatic. Love Winston's propeller tail. It's a wonder he doesn't take off !
Stunning, loved the edit. Love the social history lessons and I am learning whilst someone else gets wet :). Can't wait for part 6, great stuff Roz keep that smile going!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I think places become more interesting when you find out a bit of history about them 👍🏼
Probably not. I can imagine this place being quite busy in the summer months. One good thing about the poor weather is that we get to have the place all to ourselves 😀 Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hi. Your 'vidiography' and small historical insights are great. A lot of people would not be interested in the history of where they're walking. I enjoy learning the significance of what I'm seeing. Also, intrigue would force me personally to learn more about what I'm seeing.🤔 Holes in mountains....you just gotta right?! FYI, trenchant prevention lol, try wearing a suitably sized freezer bag over your socks? Works for under motorbike gloves. Cheers for a great vid again.😁 Freeeeedommmm!
I think the place becomes more interesting when you learn a little bit of history about it. And yes, dark holes in mountains, and I'm like a moth to a flame 😅 Thanks for the tip, and thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Brilliant video, Roz, I especially liked it when the clouds lifted to reveal that spectacular view. My answer to running out of dry socks? Buy more socks😂 Maybe that’s just a man’s solution? Loving your Welsh adventure, despite the rain, thankyou for taking us along.
I had already taken 20 pairs of socks 😅😅 14 days between laundry and then 6 extra pairs. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Glad that the mist and fog cleared for you to get a better view. I really liked the “Art Deco” style gates on the entrances. If you and Winston go there again, I’m sure those gates will fit in the back of your van… I will pay your petrol/ diesel to deliver them to my door! Great vlog, hope the weather gets better for the next installment…
Transporting the gates wouldn't be an issue. Removing the gates and carrying them down the track to my van would be the problem 😅😅 Thanks for watching and commenting. Glad you liked it.
The music in this video doesn't seem to have been to everyones taste, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. (Personally, I like a bit of rock music). Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@Roz.S I grew up on rock, it's good to hear it on RU-vid as most people seem to use teenage rap type 'music' I don't want to hear & which gets muted as it's so irritating. Definitely can't please everyone.
Greetings, again, from 🇨🇦. Watching this instalment of “The Travels of Winston” on the telly, whilst noting you on the iPad. Gotta’ say that I honestly admire your acquisition of the skills that permit travel whilst also “working”, more-or-less full-time. Profound thanks to W, and you of course, for taking “us” along… 👍🤓
Thanks for tuning in! Our schedule is that we go on an adventure in the morning, and then after lunch we settle down for work. My work hours are usually 2pm-8pm. It's not quite an 8-hour day, but I work weekends as well so over the course of a week it works about the same as a full time job 👍🏼 Thanks for watching and commenting 😀
Winston thought you might be in trouble that’s why he wined he looks out for you as you do for him our Alfie is just the same he stops dead in his tracks if it looks odd he will not move for love or money you are both having a good time and that’s what it’s all about looking forward to seeing your next blog
Great piece of industrial exploration and it looked like you had the whole place to yourselves, although I do feel sorry for you - so much rain on this tour! I’m sure you don’t have to worry much about quicklime there nowadays, an awful lot of rainwater has passed through that ground since site work ended. Great news that Winston passed his annual medical, I guess this gives you confidence for planning this year’s adventures.👍
I seem to have rain wherever I go 😅 I think a cloud just permanently hangs over me waiting for me to leave the house. I did panic when I first read up about quicklime, but wondered whether it would still be around and still be active after all this time had passed. Thankfully, I think you're right. We're at home now, and Winston has got a nice long rest before a BIG adventure that I have booked for us next. I will reveal all closer to the time 😉 Thanks for watching and commenting.
Everyone's brave pants are different. I picture mine being huge cotton briefs with a few loose threads hanging down and an off-shade pale pink color (from years of washing them on 60-degree cycles) and some big frills around all the edges, making them look like your grandmother's doily. 😂
Another great vlog, interesting location you chose to share. We forget how industrialised this country once was. Do you know how many people were employed at the site during its time in production?
Sorry, I do not know. I just had a quick Google but I cannot find a number. It did say that the majority of the locals worked there; walking to and from the kilns every day. And men who lived further away went their on a Sunday night and then went home the following Friday. So, I guess it employed quite a lot of people but sadly I cannot find a number. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@Roz.S its really amazing how quickly nature takes back, another 10 years and nobody would know the site ever existed, completely reabsorbed in to the natural landscape
The drive you were on is famous: look up ‘Top Gear road Black Mountain Pass’. It’s a fantastic road and attracts a lot of drivers ( and police and tow trucks) . My Caddy is a micro camper and I stayed the night in the view point car park. Next week - Devil’s Bridge?
@@carolhughes312 Not on this trip, we were focusing on the Brecon Beacons for this adventure. I'll give you a clue: In the next video, we go to the highest waterfall in South Wales 😀
Another great video and music Roz, thank you for sharing. You and Winston are a perfect match and it’s great to see you both together. I’m based in the East Mids but not been to Wales for umpteen years, but you’re inspiring me to chuck my camping gear, mountain bike and Brompton in the car and head off to South Wales when the weather improves - I’m a lot older than you hahaha! See you in the next video. John B
I use to live around the East Midlands (Grantham, Newark, and Retford) when I was in my 20s 👍🏼 ...I never went to see Newark Castle though 😅 I hope you get out on an adventure soon. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Well watched your latest vlog. Roz as a Dad to a 39 ye old lad (next week end he is ) I do worry about you and Winston.. wet slippery 😮 But you got back to pod so worry over lol Looked cold and me here in 26° warmth today ... I do miss Wales ... Be safe and thanks for your volgs... Ps a grand Spanish tour would make up for the rain lol big hugs to you both
We did make it back in one piece 👍🏼 Winston's got is four padded paws and I had some boots on with good grip 😀🐶 I will venture into Spain one day, but for now I have a lot more of the UK to explore 😀👍🏼 Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@Roz.S you are an inspiration to your generation.. smart..independent.. the vlogs are a window of your adventures we all enjoy watching.. I believe 2 other vlogers are coming to Spain soon.. see how they get on ... the offer to buy you a cold drink or coffee is on should you venture out ..both you and Winston stay safe happy adventures x
Excellent video (as always). Am a tad jealous as I love Wales. But haven't been back since my son was a baby and that was nearly 17 years ago! At least we can visit it through you. BTW, I'm curious, I'm trying to place what accent you have. Yorkshire? I'm originally from the East Midlands, which is sort of similar but not quite. 27 years in France and I still have it. Bonne route to you and Winston.
Haha don’t worry, no one has ever managed to guess my accent correctly because I have moved quite a lot through my life. I originally grew up in the north east, near Middlesbrough with a Geordie accent. But I’ve since lived in Lancashire, Lincolnshire, and Cheshire, and had a short stint living in West Sussex. My accent is still northern, but I’ve lost the Geordie twang. Thanks so much for watching our video. Glad you enjoyed it.
@@Roz.S Am surprised. But thanks for answering my question. I teach English one to one and with us all being bilingual in our house, British accents always interest me. If we watch UK telly my son and daughter are now at the stage where they ask me what accent so and so has. I was born in North Warwickshire but spent much of my childhood in West Leicestershire until we moved to Leicester. So my accent is probably a mix of West Midlands & East Midlands. With Frenchisms thrown in thanks to my wife. Will look forward to your other adventures. We'll be heading to the UK soon (yearly visit), so my accent will probably get stronger. Time to stock up on UK goodies I can't get here too. 😂 Bon week-end!
Great timing…I’m sitting down with my evening meal and your new video pops up. 💕 Roast chicken salad accompanied by another Roz and Winston adventure 🐾
Hello to the other side of the globe! Hope you are enjoying your breakfast whilst watching Roz’s content. I really enjoy her vlogs, she’s just so natural and down to earth and although I’m a smidgen older, I do very similar adventures with my dog Tilly. We’re off to North Wales in April with my inflatable tent, when the weather is a bit milder…hopefully that is (planning to get a caravan next year). As you can see, the UK has some lovely places - worth a visit if you get the chance!
Hey Roz. Another great video. I would love to join you on a walk. You have so much fun. I know you were going to visit Devon, well I hope you can do that soon. Give me a shout for some recommendations Would love to join you 👍🏻🤗
Another cracking video Roz. There was no redemption needed but it was a brave move to check out that scary dark room 😁 Reckon you have a decent future in Urban Exploration videos if you get fed up with travel and camping content 😝 Fascinating story about the history of the Tollbooths and the rebellion. Glad wee Winston had no ill effects from the lime (i would have had no idea it could cause a problem either 😬). Wales does indeed look very much like my homeland of Scotland... weather too! Look forward to the next instalment
A lot of Wales does remind me of Scotland; I think they have the same weather, too 😅 I did panic a bit after I found out about the irritation that quicklime can cause 😱 luckily, Winston is okay 👍🏼 Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
@@Roz.S do you have 'buy me a coffee' or anything like that? Your videos are very enjoyable. Wondered if subscribers could also buy a coffe as another way to support
@@stevemcqueen160 Thanks so much. I don't have anything like that set up at the moment as I'm currently just making these videos for fun. I do appreciate the gesture though, thank you.
You both always look like you're having a great time 👍🏼. I'm definitely going to buy a pod. I will live in it. What do you recon? I was thinking of a motorhome at first, but I have a decent diesel car, that could tow a pod. And easier to find a camping space.
We do try to have a good time 😇 The only downside to full time pod life is that you don't have a shower or bathroom and it's not classed as being self-contained because you don't have your own fresh and grey water storage; those are pumped in and out from outside. And even though it says you can go 'off-grid' take that with a pinch of salt. Ideally, you need to be on a campsite. But you could, theoretically, live it in. 👍🏼
Yep, tabs are nice. I was looking at them too. But again, they're not self-contained and I'm not sure how well they perform off grid, so you may still need a campsite. And campsites have gone up to about £30 per night at the moment.
Quicktime is seriously nasty stuff, and a traditional use for it was to aid the decomposition of dead bodies. When prisoners were hanged in the UK quicklime was added to their coffins, with holes drilled in the bottom of the coffin to allow the "soup" to disperse rapidly. Did you bring any home as you might want to consider it for your unwanted "admirers"? 😉
Love the videos but did you do a risk assessment before entering the kilns? There is a possibility that oxygen denying gases could be in the confined spaces (carbon dioxide from acidic rain on limestone or even methane from rotten vegetation etc). I don't want to spoil your fun but try reading up on confined spaces risks. I've watched loads of vlogs where people just go in to flooded railway tunnels, caves, derelict buildings etc without realising how dangerous they can be. Don't take this comment the wrong way, just be safe and make more entertaining videos. Look after yourself and Winston.
