Solo Fishing for monster fish off the rocks after a storm.

In this episode I go fishing around the rocks during a storm to try catch a monster snapper.
I love fishing during or straight after a storm if possible. This day the swell had dropped just enough for me to walk into a bay I haven’t fished before to target a big snapper. It’s not long before the fresh bait and burly draws in a massive snapper that starts smashing my baits, I manage to hook and land one of the biggest snapper i have ever caught.

A terrific video. Well presented. Contagious fishing enthusiasm balanced by your persistent attempts to revive the big snapper. Couldn't be better.

One of my favourite fishing channels mate, I don't have a boat so most of the content I like to watch is shore based. A New Zealand trip is on my cards in the next year or 2, a snapper and a king land based would be a dream, I reckon I'd have a crack at a parore on the bobby cork and cabbage weed too, it's pretty popular over here in Australia, we call them Luderick.
@OceanNationCo

Thanks mate. I appreciate the support. Hit me up if you do come over and I’ll point you in the right direction. There are heaps of big parore here off the rocks and at the wharves. Heaps more land based missions coming 👌🏽

Excellent video. I think one thing to consider with C&R revival in this case is the water temperature and saturated oxygen in the shallow water/rock pools. Smaller bodies of water would be warmer than where that snapper was coming from, and saturated oxygen would be lower too. That may explain why it struggled to pump those gills in the pool. That's just a thought, these two factors play a big role in Pacific salmon C&R success, and the last time I fished for snapper was over 30 years ago now and back then C&R is almost unheard of. Good to see!
@OceanNationCo
@OceanNationCo 7 месяцев назад
Thanks mate. That pool hade waves washing into it so it would have been well oxygenated. Temperature probably does play a big part too

@@OceanNationCo Yeah I figure that water is not completely dead and constantly recharged by the tide, definitely helps. Very interesting stuff. When I lived and fished in OZ in the early 90s, landbased snapper fishing opportunities were rare or perhaps just not well explored back then. We always read about and envy NZ's opportunities. I've been wanting to come down (from Canada) to film some episodes on NZ's saltwater opportunities, one of these days. 😄

Nice one, mate. Shows how much I need to learn about land-based, I would have walked straight past that area looking for deeper water, but you knew it would hold fish!! Good effort to release the big boy. I think you're right, the water in the pool looked a bit average with no oxygenation - and the backwash of dirty silt-laden water when you were holding him in the shallows wouldn't have helped - fisheries scientist advice is that their gills aren't designed for the water to go backwards through them, so it's actually detrimental. You see guys holding fish for release, pushing them backwards and forwards in the water, which is the wrong thing to do...we should always just hold them still, facing into current if possible.
@OceanNationCo
@OceanNationCo Год назад
Yea I use to look for deeper water too but iv found the shallows fish super well if the water is a bit dirty. I tasted the water in the pool and it was salty I think having a big hook in its throat was playing a big part. I totally agree with you that you try keep them still when releasing… fish don’t swim backwards for a reason haha

Nice fish. I was up this spot a couple days ago (drove in from the Tron), and even tried a few ledges further north. Must say it was pretty quiet, not even a bite. At least the 10kg of bait and berley doubled as a nice work out. I normally fish the west, or well south down near Waihi. Are there particular tides/conditions you target in these neck of the woods? I fished the incoming, and just past high. It was close to a blue bird day, so suspect it was a bit bright, and coupled with poor tides, I probably shoulda rescheduled. Thoughts?

Why did you release a fish with a hook in it's throat they don't survive. And that story about someone catching a fish a couple of weeks later and the hook half rusted.😂 Your dreaming mate.! I suppose you're theory makes you feel better but it's not true.! Do you use circle hooks.? Awesome fish off the rocks.!

Well I guess you have your theory and I have mine. I bet no of us sit under the water and watch what happens so who knows really, I know it would have died if I stabbed it in the head though. I don’t use circles bro but honestly 99% of the fish I catch are hooked in the corner of the mouth, if they weren’t I’d be using circles.
