Solo Hiking a 40 Mile Loop at Linville Gorge

In the fall of 2021 I hiked a 40-mile loop around Linville Gorge in North Carolina. I traveled north along the eastern rim, then across and down into the gorge, hiking back along the Linville River. It was rugged, wild, and beautiful! This lightly narrated video documents that hike, and how I was almost unable to finish due to injury.

Another awesome video, I actually camped in that exact same spot. On the East ridge there's some amazing spots to camp right on the cliffs. The Linville Gorge is no joke!

I liked your narration style. Not too intrusive that I couldn't enjoy the natural sounds of your footsteps along the trail. But, informative enough to give it a nice story feel, rather than just raw footage. Are you planning to do a logistics and planning video for this hike? I hope so. The ones you've done in the past have been helpful.

Thank you! Glad you liked the format and enjoyed the video. Yes, I will produce a logistics and planning video for this hike. I'm working on putting it together. In addition to showing the route/maps I used, I have some commentary as to the difficulty level and what to expect, both on the rim and inside the gorge. I kind of went "blind" on this hike, not really having a lot of feedback on it. So hopefully what I put together will help others have more control over the difficulty level of the route they choose, as well as a better idea of what to expect. I won't lie though - I enjoyed just diving into it to see what I would find 🙂

I also need to warn himers of the LEDGE sectopn around the west side of Hawksbill. This is a rock-hop under cliffs and stone slabs...not really suitsble for most backpackers. Easy to break an ankle. Much rougher than the remainder of the trail but a necessary bottleneck unless you want to walk a road. LEDGE is beautiful.

Great to see! How did you manage the upper river crossing? Since the bridge being washed away i wonder how people navigate that crossing.

The loop I did went farther north and came out at the visitor center so there was no river crossing on the north end.

Great vid! Linville is one of the greatest locations in the southeast. Looks like you made a great loop (sometimes this takes creativity due to all the unconnected trails and forest service roads).

Jim, thank you! I definitely want to go back, spend more time, and check out some of the other trails. I would love to camp up on the ridge, but since it was my first time, I walked a bit too far that first night. Such a cool place!

I did it in 2 days and a morning, but that was pretty ambitious. 3 full days would have been more comfortable. I generally hike 20+ mile days, but Linville hiking is fairly strenuous.

If you were to do the Grand Loop again ... what would you do differently? What combination of trails did you take (especially in the northeastern quadrant around Gingercake)? Awesome video!

If I did it again I would do it over 3 days instead of two, or maybe even spend 4 days in the gorge checking out other trails. I would also camp the first night on the eastern gorge rim for sunset.
